MS would drop the price of Windows to virtually nothing and crush Apple (I'm going to guess here, but I can't see Apple selling OS X for less than $250, with the OEM - if available - going for $200.) The price difference, coupled with the crippling driver problems for Apple (which would make Vista's look like nothing) would destroy Apple's (largely undeserved) reputation for OS stability (compared to MS.) If the drivers worked, then the storm of malware for OS X would ruin Apple's reputation as a "virus free" OS. Apple gets by because they are a media darling - if thing started to go bad, the media would turn on them quickly. So while it's a nice dream, there is no reason for Apple to do it. Jobs appears to be convinced that MS will self destruct, and he will be the saviour of the computing world. I doubt it, but we'll see. T

Prolly true, but it's nice to dream. :) >I agree, I think if Apple offered OS X for PC's they would make a killing >and jump to #2 overnite in the PC world. Apple would quickly loose their reputation for reliability if they had to support all the hardware, and software MS does. They have been able to be what they are, because they completely control the software/ hardware environment in which they run.

And destroy their hardware biz. JRS wrote: I agree, I think if Apple offered OS X for PC's they would make a killing and jump to #2 overnite in the PC world. I don't think it would lead to a drive to linux. But it contnues to kill me that Apple has OSX which could easily run on anything, and they don't. If Apple tomorrow came out and ran an ad campaign called Redemption, and offered. Pc users a chance to switch just OS, they would sell like hotcakes.

Dell is selling Ubuntu powered Desktops. Sure it's not a plague of locusts or guys with swords coming out of their mouths, but it's pretty damn close. Odds are you aren't connecting at 33.6k so a 25mb monthly patch doesn't kill you. The abilty to have sentralized updates that can be easily sent to the masses matters. MS right now is only unchallenged because reasonable competition refuses to compete out of vanity. RE: [H] OT: Sad day, AutoPatcher gone
I'm probably in the minority on this list, but I never was too crazy on AutoPatcher. I used it a few times on new builds, but it always seemed like the machines I used AutoPatcher on were a little more quirky than those I didn't, so I stopped using it. I point machines at my WSUS server now. :) Greg From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of JRS Sent: Wednesday, August 29, 2007 5:28 PM To: hardware@hardwaregroup.com Subject: [H] OT: Sad day, AutoPatcher gone Sad day Posted by Antonis Kaladis on August 29th, 2007 Today we received an e-mail from Microsoft, requesting the immediate take-down of the download page, which of course means that AutoPatcher is probably history.
