Asus EEE PC 1201N: 12.1 screen, ION, Atom N330 Dual Core, 2GB RAM, 3Lbs. Unique unit
among a field of 11 netbooks.

11 from outside edge of left most key to outside edge of right most key. This of
course is sans-numeric keypad like all other netbook/notebooks. Caveat is chicklet
style keys if that's an issue.

Highly recommend this unit over any other netbook or notebook though it's pricey @
~$490. Best video in it's price range, great battery life, decent enough CPU, more
than capable of 1080P playback.

Subject: [H] Recommended Laptops/Notebooks and/or Brands

My wife's birthday is coming up in a couple of months and I'd like to
get her a laptop/notebook she can use. Netbooks are out for a simple
reason--the keyboard is too small. Recently my wife bought a new
keyboard (through Amazon Marketplace) but she didn't like it as the
keyboard was too narrow. I've looked into this a little and the
keyboard she didn't like had a measurment of 10.5 from the outside of
the tab key to the end of the return key. The one she like was 11.25.
S, I took a tape measure and went to Best Buy Staples and started
measuring. Netbooks usually run from 9.5 to 9.75. Keyboards these
days have shrunk. They range from 10.5 to 11.0 inches. Surprisingly
enough, some of the cheapest and smallest keyboards/laptops have the
biggest keyboards.

Anyways, I'm looking for recommendations. I take all customer reviews
with a grain of salt (one guy on Newegg gave an Asus laptop one star
because they didn't include a reinstall disk). Of course, price is a
major consideration. And of course, a wide keyboard, LOL.

ThanksSteve

I still can't believe Asus has a RoG 17 laptop with great video CPU for
$1000

AS I just posted, my KB is that width for almost 2/3 less cost half the weight
though not a desktop replacement by any stretch it will give one a run for their
money on battery life video playback.

Pretty fast for a laptop (portable desktop replacement, IMO).

Acer. Though I don't like Netbooks, and would go with an Ultraportable myself.

Well, I didn't buy that Sony for battery life or video playback, though
this machine plays blu-ray disc at full 1080p on its own screen, since
its native resolution is 1920 x 1080 and it has a blu-ray player on
board. I bought it because it comes with 6 GB ram and includes an
i7-720 quad core processor at a 64-bit os. It rivals both my desktops
and takes a fraction of the space...I do know a lot of people who buy
laptops and park them. They just like the idea of a laptop but don't
really want to carry it around. This sucker as the most wonderful
keyboard of any laptop I've ever seen. It's even backlight at night (has
an ambient light sensor on board). Price is the downside here, as is
portability if one needs that.

If I were only a gamer.

Also what I was thinking. Pretty much most netbooks are out, not only
from the keyboard aspect, but because I know my wife would complain
about having to use flash keys to install/move programs/data. Oh, I
think she'd be able to handle it, she just probably wouldn't want to ;-).

As for price, I was looking for something as cheap as possible, the
resources are there right now

Well there is also Network and the abiity to attach a USB DVD-R drive or external
HDD. Personally I do miss the ability to make DVD's on-the-fly, just not enough to
switch to a heavier machine.
