is the traffic logging. I wanted an -N router with all the extra goodies :)

I agree with this. I had an older WRT54G that was fine, ver 3 or 4 I believe,
but they went to hell when they cut the memory in half and changed the
programming language on the later ones..

The WRT54GL was released in response to all the complaints, and they do seem
OK. :)

Sorry, it was "micro" not mini for 2MB which is what they cut the 54GS down to after
v4. My bad, getting rusty I guess? ;)

Yes, WRT54GL is listed as compatible w/ any @4MB flash albeit 802.11g only. There are
more than a few g/n models that also work from various vendors.

Re: [H] Linksys routers

2009-02-16 Thread Naushad, Zulfiqar
I know this defeats the original purpose of this thread, but I just
recently moved to an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station, and I am so far
quite happy with it.

For some reason it just works better in my configuration rather than my
previous Asus (DDWRT) and Buffalo (Tomato) routers. I had issues
regarding streaming multimedia (especially video) in my house and had
occasional stutters (maybe 1 every 5 minutes). The Apple router doesn't
exhibit this and surprisingly the wireless coverage is better despite me
having a high gain antenna on the buffalo (in conjunction with the built
in amplifier).

I do really miss the amazing real time stats from Tomato, but since the
Apple router is working fine, I don't see a reason to go back. I wish I
was located in the states because I have 4 routers (all DDWRT and/or
Tomato compatible) that I would like to sell.

Regards,

AFAIK Buffalo is defunct in the USA now due to a CSIRO case.

I honestly think mini-DDWRT is more than most people will ever use. I even
used Micro and that is more than enough for most home users. Either is more
feature packed than the standard firmware that comes on these routers
anyway. If the OP is looking for a stable replacement for his old WRT54G v4,
then the WRT54GL will do a great job. Add DDWRT and it is the perfect G
wireless router in my book.

kept up too much with the Wireless-N routers which is the type I want to get
for them.

How are the Linksys WRT310N and the WRT160N routers?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Bobby

I used to use Linksys, but now use Netgear.

I've not used those particular Linksys models, but have read a couple
reviews that say those new 'saucer shaped' ones put out lots of heat,
which to my mind usually means lower reliability...

I have the WRT160N. Its my first Linksys as I always used Netgear. I have been
less than pleased with the Linksys. Lots of stutters and delays, tech support
has been less than helpful.

Unit puts out a TREMENDOUS amount of heat.

I personally am going back to Netgear.

Just my 2 cents.

Good luck
