[Ha-Safran] 2 Amos Oz titles back in print

2003-10-07 Thread Stuart Schnee
I am pleased to tell you that The Toby Press has just released 2 Amos Oz
titles which have been out of print. These titles are available through
Brodart, Baker & Taylor and Ingram as well as Barnes & Noble, Amazon and
local bookstores.

Soumchi, ISBN 1592640389, paperback, $7.95

Soumchi is eleven years old, and growing up in British-occupied Jerusalem,
just after World War II. His universe is enriched immeasurably when he is
given a bicycle, but before he fulfills his dreams of riding into the
desert and exploring Africa, he shows his new prize to a friend. Persuaded
to swap his bicycle for a new train set, Soumchis series of misadventures
begin as he trades away one possession after another but as he imagines
ever more colorful ways of escaping his predicament he finds something he
never expected his first love. With Soumchi, Oz brings to life a
protagonist in the tradition of such memorable scamps as Huckleberry Finn;
Soumchi is fresh, funny and always engaging.

Unto Death, ISBN 1592640370, paperback, $12.95

Unto Death comprises two novellas by one of Israel's most gifted writers.
In "Crusade" and "Late Love" Oz explores the atmosphere of hatred in which
Jews live, die, or degenerate into insanity. In "Crusade" a band of
Crusaders journeys towards Jerusalem, attacking and killing Jews along the
way. Their initial spirit of triumph gives way before depression as disease
and deprivation slow their progress. In "Late Love," set in modern-day
Israel, an aged lecturer who willingly ignores his deteriorating body
cannot ignore his paranoid visions of the destruction of his people by
Soviet Russia. Considered to be some of Oz's finest writing, Unto Death has
appeared in America, England, France, Finland, Sweden, Spain, Holland,
Russia, and Poland.

[Ha-Safran] JWB

2003-10-07 Thread Dina Tanners
Hello,
The religious education at the nearby military base called to see
if we knew how to get any items from JWB, such as its haggadah or
booklets on the Sabbath, Birth and Life cycle, and mourning. If I
remember correctly, those things do not exist any more. She is not
Jewish, and the person ordering these items (in quantity) did not
give her much information.

Thanks,

Re: [Ha-Safran] Videotapes & audiotapes vs. DVDs & CDs

2003-10-07 Thread Rose Myers
The price of DVD players has gone down enough that I
own one; I paid under $100 for it last year. (The
Christmas season is the time to buy.) And you can
play CD's on a computer, if nothing else is available.

We bought "last year's model" car last November in
order to get the tape player as standard equipment.
This year's model now comes with a CD player. But
there are still more books on tape than on CD at our
local secular libraries.

But you're right: It will soon be hard to find the
equipment to play video and audio tapes if your
current players break. And copying to another medium
is not so easy. (I assume it's legal as long as you
own the original version.)

Floppy diskettes are going away and I certainly can't
use any of my 5 1/4" ones anymore. Even my backup
system won't work if I buy a new computer; my 100Mb
diskettes have been phased out by burnable CD's.

I've heard that there are data from space probes on
Holerith (punch) cards and no one can access the
information any more. How quickly are we losing
information as equipment and software changes? Books,
scrolls, clay tablets are all still accessible after
thousands of years.

In terms of US law, if it's not under copyright there's no problem. As I
alluded in my previous message, the new formats would be, generally, less
of a problem, since the case law is much less extensive.

The question may be the reverse: Is it any less illegal to make multiple
copies of reference books? If they are still under copyright, you are in
clear violation--certainly in the case of photocoping books (Columbia
University lost a multi-million dollar lawsuit doing this). There may not
have been quite as much litigation with digital formats, but I wouldn't
want to be the test case!

[Ha-Safran] CD-RWs for class copies of mishnah and gemara

2003-10-07 Thread Tzolelet
Well, here comes another can of worms involving copyright and
technology. Add to the mix a little cost-effectiveness and library policy
and I come up with a quandary.

We have had a policy of making photocopies of reference books, including
mishnah and gemara, for students at no cost to them. Our photocopy bills
have been outrageous this last year. I am thinking of using a high-quality
scanner to cut costs and to make the work (in titles not bound by
copyright) accessible to students who would then borrow the disk (either CD
or floppy) and return it. It would also save wear and tear on the volumes
to scan them rather than photocopy.

I have floated this idea to one of our rebbeim who is very technology
savvy. He questions whether or not it is legal under both Jewish law and
secular law to use the technology to do essentially the same thing we did
with photocopying. For some reason, the prevailing thought here is that
using the technology makes it less acceptable to copy for what I would
consider fair use.

Is there any legal basis to the belief that scanning to disk for loan is
less legal than photocopying for fair use? Is there any basis in Jewish
law for not scanning pages of gemara and mishnah to disk? We are not
thinking of reproducing the material for profit but rather for research
purposes in the writing of student papers.

Any approaches to any of these issues will be greatly appreciated.

Re: [Ha-Safran] Videotapes & audiotapes vs. DVDs & CDs

2003-10-07 Thread Ted Koppel
Sara,

No surprise. It's electronic evolution. Survival of the fittest. Darwin
at work.

Go to Target. 98% of their music is on CD. Remaining VHS tapes are marked
down for clearance and have just a fraction of the floor space they used to.

Same at Blockbuster. They still rent VHS, but there is far more selection
on DVD than on VHS at this point. Some day they will simply discontinue VHS.

Remember that cassette and VHS tapes are (were) fragile technology. They
were vulnerable to stretching, demagnetizing, tearing, and all sorts of
mechanical problems. CDs and DVDs, while not impervious to damage, are
considerably less vulnerable.

The best thing that your library can do is to purchase a couple of (cheap)
VHS machines and a couple of (cheap) cassette players and stick them in
storage for about 5 years. When your current players break (and become too
costly to repair) you'll have a brand new one ready to use.

RE: [Ha-Safran] automated system for self-checkout

2003-10-07 Thread Ann Abrams
Many years ago I observed at a K-8 public school library that was automated
with Winnebago. This is the system the librarian used, successfully:

all of the students' barcodes were in a 3-ring binder, arranged by grade,
and within each grade, alphabetized by last name.

students went over to the desk with the 3-ring binder and bar-wand, found
their barcode, and zapped their barcode and their books; there were date-due
cards there for the students to put in the book pockets.

The librarian watched as the children managed just fine. I agree it's a
good idea to have an adult supervising.

Re: [Ha-Safran] automated system for self-checkout

2003-10-07 Thread Ted Koppel
Eve,

Let me answer this from the point of view of a library systems vendor who
has numerous installations in schools (albeit larger schools than a
synagogue day school).

Generally, self-service checkout works in schools. The crucial factor: how
good is the software you're using at "locking down" certain functions and
permitting others? My company's software, for example, (The Library
Corporation) is highly configurable and can be set to allow nothing more
than charge or return without any other intervention. We have
installations where self-service is offered at elementary, middle, and high
school levels.

Check with your library system provider. Other library management
software providers, particularly for smaller settings such as yours, may or
may not allow very granular setting of privileges.

As long as you have taken reasonable steps towards security (different
passwords at each level of authority, don't put a password on a post-it
note near the screen), self-service is a great enabler and time saver.

Note, too, that in a small school setting, you have significant leverage
over student behavior (which isn't always the case in larger schools or
public library settings).

Subject: [Ha-Safran] [losmuestros] La synagogue de Bulawayo a brule

Thanks to Rufina from South Africa

100 years of Jewish history up in smoke
'Miracle' saves torahs
By Ronit Loewenstern

Bulawayo, Zimbabwe -- More than 100 years of Jewish history went up in smoke
yesterday (October 4 2003) when the historic Bulawayo Hebrew Congregation
synagogue burnt to the ground.
Although priceless sidurim, Hagadot and other Jewish books and relics were
destroyed, no one was hurt in the blaze. Even so, said a tearful Beilah
Bloch, it was a "miracle that our torahs were saved". Had it not been for
the quick thinking of congregants, Rodney Lepar and Raymond Roth, six old
torahs and numerous smaller ones would have perished as well. Also saved was
the Arc curtain made in 1725.
According to eyewitnesses, Mr Lepar and Mr Roth were looking in through a
window of the burning building when they each "saw" a torah near the Arc.
Although each saw a different coloured one through the flames that was the
'sign' Rodney needed. Despite protests from firemen and heedless of the
burning beams and thick smoke, he ran into the building. The steel doors
of the Arc were locked by a strong padlock, yet Mr Lepar some how managed to
kick them in, away from the concrete pillars. He then grabbed anything he
could lay his hands on and passed them out of the building.
Damage estimated in the millions (Zimbabwe $) came on the eve of Yom Kippur,
as the congregation was making ready to gather with their new rabbi, Rabbi
Nathan Asmouch, newly arrived from Israel. He ran three kilometres from his
home, as it was Shabbat, to be with the grieving community.
Most poignant of all was Rev Laizer Abrahamson, who this year celebrated his
104th birthday, (born April 2 1899).
After the flames were doused, with water dripping from the rafters, he only
stand and stare, walking stick in hand, Yarmuckah askew as he wiped tears
away.
The Bulawayo Hebrew Community, which now numbers only about 170 souls -down
from more than 3000 at its zenith in the 1960s - has a long and proud
history. The 'shul' as the city's landmark is known, began in a canvass tent
in 1894 and grew over the years into a magnificent stained-glass structure.
Its inaugural meeting of 21 pioneers in then Rhodesia was held shortly after
Bulawayo was proclaimed a town.
Emanuel Basch, Bulawayo Mayor and Congregation President, laid the
foundation stone on May 17 1910 and the building was consecrated in April
1911. Years later, this synagogue was not big enough to contain the growing
community and overflow services were held in nearby buildings. So in 1945
Leonora Granger, a well-known local architect, drew up plans for a more
'modern' building. By the 1960s the building consisted to two facades - the
front a magnificent Cape Dutch style originally designed through a
competition and the stylish red brick and stained glass modernist Granger
side - Both are now gone.
The small-standing community is justly proud of its record - not a day
missed in its history whereby a minyan was not formed, then and now. Said
the rabbi in 1929, Rev M I Cohen, "Since the beginning (1898) we have never
held a single meeting outside our own buildings."
Despite the tragedy, by Sunday morning, the congregation was flat-out
cleaning the torahs, their silver templates, washing the white Yom Kippur
clothes and gathering their strength from each other. Services would now be
held in make shift premises. Said David Lasker, "The façade can be saved."
Perhaps the community can build again.

[Ha-Safran] automated system for self-checkout

2003-10-07 Thread Eve Panzer
The head of my day school wants me to consider allowing students to check
out their own books on our automated system. I would most likely be in the
library to supervise at first. It is a simple process since we have a
scanner. The student would just have scan the bar code on their library
card, scan the barcode on the library book and click on print to print out
a date due receipt. I am however hesitant to start letting the students use
the library system. Many of the students at our school very computer savvy
and even though I have password protections, I think they might eventually
figure out how to get into other parts of the library system such as patron
info, cataloging, etc. Our day school is K-8, but she wants me to start with
4th grade.

Has anyone had experience allowing students to check out books on an
automated system?
I would really appreciate your input.

Thanks in advance!
