[ha-Safran]: Willie's Son

2003-11-05 Thread Daniel Stuhlman
Hello Librarians in Southern California!

Most of the time we talk about books and library materials. I would just
like to call your attention to a one-man play written and performed by my
cousin, Steven Hack, a talented writer, singer and dancer. The play,
Willie's Son, is about Steve's father, Willie Hack. Since Steve is younger
than me, I knew his father before he did. From performing in the Jewish
Community Center of St. Louis productions to appearing in Broadway
productions of Cats (2118 performances) and A Chorus Line (616
performances) Steven now lives in Hollywood where he works as an actor,
appearing regularly in television and films.

This play has played to rave reviews at the Interact Theatre Company. This
is a great opportunity to be entertained and touched by the story of my
locksmith uncle and his son, a great entertainer. One reviewer said, ...
Steven Hack transforms before our eyes, from the boy who can dance to the
man who can move -- move his audience.

[ha-Safran]: Chabad Hebrew Academy in San Diego destroyed

2003-11-05 Thread Zyroff, Ellen
The Chabad Hebrew Academy in San Diego was totally destroyed, including
every student record, every desk and pencil and its entire preschool
through grade 8 library. The school was in the Scripps Ranch neighborhood
of the City of San Diego, in which many homes were destroyed, including the
houses of two families attending the school; additional school families
suffered home damage. I spoke with representatives of the school this
morning. They are in the process of assessing their losses and will be
needing much help in rebuilding the school and its library. Miraculously
their new building, under construction, still stands. At this point they
need funds. They do not yet have a storage facility to receive donated books.

[ha-Safran]: Grants for I.B. Singer Programs Available

2003-11-05 Thread Laura Hayes
Applications are available for Assimilating America: The Life and Stories
of Isaac Bashevis Singer, a new initiative that provides grants to
libraries that present public programs on the life and work of the Nobel
Prize-winning writer Isaac Bashevis Singer (1904-1991). Libraries of all
types are invited to apply. To obtain a grant application, please visit
www.ala.org/publicprograms. Applications must be received by December 15,
2003.

Fifty selected libraries will receive a $450 grant to cover programming
costs and support materials, including the authoritative three-volume
hardcover collection Isaac Bashevis Singer: Collected Stories, which will
be published by The Library of America in July 2004; a reading group guide;
the How to Organize a Singer Program leaders guide; and access to an
extensive Singer Centennial Web site that contains a national calendar of
events, biographical and critical writings on Singer, continuously updated
resources, and relevant links to other sites. Grant recipients also are
invited to attend an orientation workshop at the American Library
Association (ALA) Annual Conference in Orlando, Fla., on June 27, 2004.

The centennial celebration, Assimilating America, will provide funding for
a variety of public programs, including scholar or teacher-led book
discussion groups, discussions of the differences and similarities between
the book and film versions of one of Singers works, readings of Singers
stories by local performers or community leaders, lectures by scholars and
others knowledgeable about Singer and his work, panel discussions featuring
scholars or writers familiar with the themes portrayed in Singers works,
screenings of films based on Singers works or documentaries on the writer,
or dramatizations based on Singers works. Libraries applying for a grant
are asked to develop a program for a public audience based on one of the
aforementioned program ideas or a new idea that explores Singers life and
work.

Isaac Bashevis Singer, the most famous Yiddish writer of the 20th century,
was an immigrant writer who gained recognition as a renowned American
writer. His writings include The Family Moskat (1950), The Magician of
Lublin (1961), In My Fathers Court (1966), The Manor (1967), and The Estate
(1969).

Assimilating America is an initiative of The Library of America in
cooperation with the ALA Public Programs Office, and with support from the
National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).

[ha-Safran]: Library Student-- Help Needed

2003-11-05 Thread abkatz
Hi all,

I am a MLIS student at Rutgers University, and I am doing a project on
synagogue records. I would appreciate help on any or all of the
following questions:

1) Are there any repositories that have large numbers of synagogue
records?

2) I would like to hear from people who work in synagogues/temples or
know personally of synagogues who have kept their records. How far back
do the records go? I would especially like to hear about records in
older synagogues.

3) If you have extensive records, how well have they been preserved?

4) How accessible are they?

5) If, in theory, someone would want to digitize them and make them
available to the public, how would you or the synagogue higher ups feel
about such a project?

Please e-mail me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks for your help!

[ha-Safran]: Do you remember these titles?

2003-11-05 Thread Louise C. Leonard
SunflowerShalom! One of our teachers just told me about a series of books
by a Jewish author that sounded really interesting, but she couldn't
remember the author or exact titles. All she remembers is that the titles
are usually two words. One novel was about a woman who married a fellow
Jew, who was very uniterested in physical love and became quite abusive to
her. The other was about a Jewish woman who was raped on the way home from
the synagogue by an African-American man, and gave birth to a child who
looked white nine months later. This child later grows up to marry and
have a child who looks black. The grandmother and the grandchild go to
live on a kibbutz while the father goes to America. Ring any bells with
anyone?

Thanks for the help!

The author is Naomi Ragen. The Sacrifice of Tamar is the title about
the Orthodox woman raped by an African-American man. Other titles are
Sotah and Jephte's Daughter.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Do you remember these titles?

2003-11-05 Thread Randy Belinfante
Dear Ms. Leonard,
The books of which you speak are about the Haredi Community and I
enjoyed them immensely, although not everyone agrees with my
assessment. They are written by Naomi Ragen (who has her own web site at:
http://www.NaomiRagen.com. The book about the abusive husband is called
Jephte's Daughter and the one about the rape is called The Sacrifice of
Tamar. You might also want to try Sotah about a woman accused of
adultery and The Ghost of Hannah Mendes about a Sephardic woman who fears
the loss of her heritage. My wife really enjoyed the last one. Anyway, enjoy.

From Here to Obscurity

2003-11-05 Thread yoel sheridan
When I wrote that my book
From Here to Obscurity (ISBN 0-9540811-0-2)
was now available in the USA from
McBooks, 4450 Poe Road, Medina, OH 44256 USA
Phone: 330-725-0402 Fax: 330-722-2439, I inadvertently omitted their e mail
address which is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The book, which is about the life and times and demise of the
Yiddish-speaking Jews of the East End of London in the period 1933 to 1945,
has universal appeal as indicated in the review that appeared in the
Jerusalem Post under the heading A London Jewish world that is no more by
Alexander Zvielli.

This is a well-executed historical novel about London's Jewish East End,
covering the 1933-1945 period..Sheridan is successful in portraying the
character types that we could just as easily find in Lodz or the Lower East
Side of New York... From Here to Obscurity is a historically perceptive
and exciting chronicle that gives us a moving fusion of history and
literature. Local author Yoel Sheridan does a good job of bringing us the
ambiance, lifestyle and nostalgic humor of London's East End. Indeed, I
found the historical descriptions absorbing.
