[ha-Safran]: a query about the 17th World Zionist Congress
Shalom safranim. I have a quotation in Hebrew from Ze'ev Jabotinsky's address to the 17th World Zionist Congress in 1931. If anyone has access to records of the Congress, and it is not a bother, would you please let me know in which language the address was given? (Jabotinsky mostly spoke in Hebrew, but sometimes, I believe, in Yiddish and German on these occasions.) B'cahvod rav. Shmuel Ben-Gad, Gelman Library, George Washington University. RE: [ha-Safran]: Free Children's Books
This is always a problem -- balancing the time it takes to give books away with wanting to do a nice deed, AND not throwing away books. Sometimes, one has to throw away books, (or recycle them) -- not everyone has the time to do the processing Rita mentions below. For those who have the time, you might want to post to the Association of Jewish studies, as sometimes there are students doing research projects that require looking at old, out of date books: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For non-Jewish materials, go to http://www.surplusbooksforcharity.org/index.html , an organization that sends all kinds of books all over the world. ALA also has some suggestions on their website, www.ala.org / and, sometimes local homeless shelters are grateful for materials in good condition. [ha-Safran]: Free children's books
I also heartily agree that the best thing to do with certain materials is simply to discard them. In the past, I wasted valuable time and space trying to find homes for unwanted books. This summer, I filled at least ten boxes and had the custodians cart them away. (It hurt for only a few minutes, and now I have lots of needed shelf space.) It's unfortunately a frequent occurrence that someone who is cleaning out their basement will automatically bring the books to our school for inclusion in our library. I hope I'm not being ungrateful when I cringe every time this happens, because I know where these items will end up. Thanks for letting me sound off on my favorite pet peeve.
