[ha-Safran]: Donation of JPS books

2004-11-24 Thread sokolskaya
A congregant of mine is moving her parents to a smaller house, and her
father has a collection of some 200 JPS books, collected from the 1960's to
the 1990's. He wants to donate them to an institution(s) that can make good
use of them. He will pay for postage and packing. There are religious
books, historical books, literature and other titles. If interested, please
contact my congregant, Ellen Saideman, at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or at 401-247-4295.

[ha-Safran]: Jews in Cyprus

2004-11-24 Thread Berman, Cherille
I have a patron looking for a copy of an article from Eretz magazine,
July-August 2001, entitled The forgotten Jews of Cyprus. If anyone could
mail me a copy of this article, he would be overjoyed. As he is
researching the Jewish Colonization Association, and specifically their
settlement of Jews in Cyprus, any other suggestions/leads would be helpful
to him.

Many thanks

[ha-Safran]: Book on Hebrew calligraphy

2004-11-24 Thread De Herman
Hi,

My name is De Herman. I'm a Hebrew calligrapher who received an email of
your request from my friend Amy, the librarian at Temple Emanuel in
Kensington, Maryland. You might check the website: www.johnnealbooks.com
and click on the online catalogue. There's a book titled Hebrew Script,
which looks lovely, albeit a bit pricey. I don't have first hand
experience with it. I have the old Toby book, which I still refer to, and
A Step By Step Guide by Jay Greenspan, which has basic info, though I don't
use it much. There's also a book by Reuben Leaf, called Hebrew Alphabets,
which is a good compendium of hands and fonts, though it doesn't give any
calligraphic instruction. I just found another website with a long list of
books on Hebrew calligraphy: www.nationalfinder.com/jbs/callig.htm

Hope this helps!

De Herman

[ha-Safran]: Classification of Holocaust Denial Literature

2004-11-24 Thread Ruth D. Bryskier
Chaverim,

As I posted before, I am in the MLIS program at UW Milwaukee and am working
on a paper for an Intellectual Freedom seminar and am very interested in how
Holocaust denial materials are cataloged. I see there was quite a bit of
literature on this in the 80's and 90's but I have not been able to find
much in the way of recent publications. I read in a San Diego Jewish
Press-Heritage article from July of 2001 that the CA. Library Association
was involved in a campaign to persuade the Library of Congress to more
correctly utilize catalog terminology. I see that the efforts were
successful, but I haven't been able to find out much after this date.

I see that the DDC in the 22nd edition, 2003 added 940.531 818 Holocaust
Denial and the LC has a number of categories under D 804.35 and 804.355 in
the 2001 edition. If any of you could address the following questions it
would be very helpful:

1)How did this change in the library standards come about?

2)What has the reaction been to the revised call numbers?

3)How widely are they being used?

4)Have the deniers themselves had any reaction to this?

Thank you so much for your insights and reactions!

[ha-Safran]: Ordering israeli films

2004-11-24 Thread Shmuel Ben-Gad
Shalom Safranim.

I apologize for bothering th elist with this again, but, if memory
serves, one or two people recommended distributors for obtaining Israeli
films. I am afraid I did not save those messages but now have to
order some Israeli films not available through Amazon. If anyone can
easily send me this information, please do so. I shall be most grateful.
