[ha-Safran]: Raquel, the Jewess of Toledo

Yes. I think it's "Raquel, the Jewess of Toledo" by Lion Feuchtwanger.
Originally
published as "Die Judin von Toledo", 1954.

There are various editions with from 339-589 pages which I suppose depends
on how
teeny you can make the print without it's disappearing altogether. Yet another
rendition of the megila of Esther but set in Spain. I tried to read it in the
spanish edition as "La judia de Toledo" and I hated it. I used to use it to
put me
to sleep.

I was so bored that I gave it away to someone I absolutely could not stand.
They
really really wanted it. How perfect, thought I. A thoroughly boring book
for a
thoroughly boring person; I'll be happy that it's out of the house and
they'll be
happy that it's in theirs. What more could a body ask for? And we both ended up
very happy with the end result of the transaction.

If any of you can come up with something wonderful to say about this book I
am all
ears and wiggling whiskers.

Happy New Year 2005
Happy Chinese New Year (lord know what number)
Happy Tu b'Shvat (founder's day for La Javura; I love Tu b'Shvat)
It's nice to have many new years; always another chance to get everything
back on
track.

RE: [ha-Safran]: More books by the Pizetzner Rebbe

2005-01-07 Thread Rettberg, Dan
Jeff--

Here at HUC we have four separate printings of Sefer Hovat ha-talmidim
(also entitled Kuntres Hovat ha-talmidim), the most recent by Makhon
Torani-sifruti Orayta in Jerusalem in 1990. Harvard lists a more recent
printing:

Author : Kalonimus Klemish ben Elimelekh, 1889-1944.
Title : Kuntres Hovat ha-talmidim : im targum be-Idish / hibro ...
Kalonimos Kalmish ha-avda Pyasetsna ...
Edition : Mahadurah hadashah im hosafot shonot.
Published : London : A. A. Gratt, 763, 2003.

An English translation was issued by Jason Aronson in 1991:

Author : Kalonimus Kalmish ben Elimelekh, 1889-1943.
Title : Kuntres Hovat ha-talmidim. English
Title : A student's obligation : advice from the rebbe of the Warsaw
ghetto / Kalonymus Kalman Shapira ; translated by Micha Odenheimer.

Published : Northvale, N.J. : J. Aronson, c1991.

I hope this helps. I wish I could be in Toronto to learn this material with
you and your teacher!

[ha-Safran]: Nehama Leibowitz request

2005-01-07 Thread Sherry Emory
My name is Ellie and I am a brand new librarian this semester (I'm only
a week old in librarian years)in Atlanta, GA. I am trying to order a
book that a faculty member needs and I'm having trouble finding it.
Please offer advice about how to obtain an ISBN or location for it. Here
are the details...
- it is part of the series Nehama Leibowitz's New Studies in _-
- we own the series but have lost Part I of New Studies in Shemot
- Eichler's told me that this book doesn't have an ISBN number
- can I order it individually without ordering a whole new set?
Thanks and I look forward to working with all of you!
