[ha-Safran]: Anti-Soviet newspapers: Anti-Semitic Materials

2005-03-01 Thread Yossi Galron
--- Message requiring your approval

From: Willemijn Lindhout [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: [ha-Safran]: Anti-Soviet newspapers: Anti-Semitic Materials
Anti-Soviet newspapers: Anti-Semitic Materials
Anti-Bolshevik newspapers that can shed new light on Russia's civil war
period (1918-1922) are now available for research. In many of these
editions, the ‘Russian national idea’ increasingly assumed the character
of anti-Semitism. In 1917 the Russian Empire contained the largest Jewish
population in the world. The Russian government perceived them as ‘the
Jewish Problem’, which needed to be solved by enforced assimilation or by
expulsion.

Many anti-Semitic materials can be found in newspapers published in the
south of Russia and in Ukraine. This is the region where the famous Pale of
Settlement with numerous Jewish shtetsl (mestechko) was located, and where
90% of all Russian Jews were forced to live.

In this collection there is much information about the numerous pogroms -
massacres committed against the Jewish population inspired by Tsarist's
regimes and later by anti-Bolsheviks governments during the Civil War (e.g.
Kievskaia zhizn’).

Anti-Bolsheviks editions emphasize the Jewish roots of many Bolsheviks
leaders. Before the revolution, many representatives of the Jewish
nationality, oppressed by the imperial government, had taken part in
revolutionary parties and circles. Attacking the Bolshevism,
newspapers reported that ‘trotsky –bronstein’ had captivated Russia
(e.g. Vechernie ogni).

[ha-Safran]: Deborah Pessin

2005-03-01 Thread Frances A. Abramson
Several persons recalled the Aleph Bet Story Book by Deborah Pessin. I
wonder if anyone remembers Deborah Pessin. She was my teacher at the CJI
(Central Jewish Institute), an after school and Sunday morning
independent Talmud Torah in Manhattan. The building at that time in the
early 1940s was rented out to the Ramaz School (the 85th St. building),
next to Congregation Kehilat Jeshurun.
The principal was Mr. Karni (not sure of spelling).

[ha-Safran]: Israel Book Suggestions Follow-Up

2005-03-01 Thread Beth Meister
I received several requests to share my responses to
my request for ideas for Israel books to buy with a
small donation. I was quite impressed to hear from
Linda Silver herself, since I got some great ideas
from and enjoy the Jewish Valuesfinder.

Here are the responses:

IMHO, the best fiction about Israel for upper elem.
kids is Samir and Yonatan by Carmi. They also like
Running On Eggs by Levine.
A new book set in Haifa in the 1970's called Dog of
Knots by Kaplan is also very good, an AJL notable for
2004. A 2004 JPS publication called Mystery of the
Dead Sea Scrolls gives readers a glimpse at a modern
Israeli family plus information about the Dead Sea
Scrolls. Some older books like Lydia, Queen of
Palestine and Becoming Gershona were written by
Israelis but they may not be in print any longer.
Adele Geras' Grandmother's Stories, newly illustrated
by Anita Lobel, frames Jewish folktales within a
Jerusalem setting. For grades 3 and 4, Sylvia
Rouss' book, Tali's Jerusalem Scrapbook, is good along
with De Costa's Snow in Jerusalem. Two new novels
involving service in the Israeli army are for high
school age and adults; I don't know of any for the
grade level you're looking for.
Besides editing the Valuesfinder, I'm a practicing
librarian and my perspective always includes
readability - books that really reach
children.

Linda added the following in a second e-mail:
There are no vendors on whom you can rely. Vendors
sell books; they aren't concerned with quality,
accuracy, or lack of bias. The only way to select
books, on any topic but especially on Israel, is by
using reliable reviews. In the case of Israel,
reliable Judaic reviews.

I also heard from two publishers:

Kar-Ben publishes several good Israel-oriented titles
for young readers.
Here is the link to our Israel collection:

Please let me know if we can help in any way.

The Israelis: Ordinary People in an Extraordinary Land
by Donna Rosenthal has been called the best book about
Israelis in decades. It's a favorite with college
students.
With great chapters the Israeli army and techies. See

Please check if the following is still in print:
It's for 5th gr.

The six-day warriors; an introduction to those who
gave Israel its

Samuel M. Silver.
New York, Bloch Pub. Co. [1969].

I would like to recommend that you look at our site

recommend specific books for you.

[ha-Safran]: A Reader for a Non-Jew

2005-03-01 Thread Jeff Corbett
Double check with your Rabbi if this is advisable in the first place.
From what I have heard, it is not always advisable in every situation to
teach Non-Jews about Judaism, unless they have the intention of converting.
This may not be the case with you and it may be okay to give them what you
are asking for, however, it would not hurt and might even be helpful to
mention this idea to your Rabbi. It is also possible that your Rabbi may
have the exact resource that you are looking for.

Jeff
