RE: [ha-Safran]: Israeli Novelists/Jewish Authors

2005-03-03 Thread Stuart Schnee
Another important book is Adjusting Sights by Haim Sabato (Toby Press). A
bestseller in Israel, this book describes the experience of a young soldier
in the Yom Kippur War. It has also been made into a movie.

Best,

2005-03-03 Thread Barbara Karp
A book entitled Nature Man in the Bible by Yehuda Feliks (Soncino Press,
1981) describes plants and animals in related to Biblical verses. While it
does not list all flowers in Tanach, there is an index where plants are
mentioned.
Hope this helps you.

[ha-Safran]: Curious about Judaism

2005-03-03 Thread Liza Stabler
A late reply for the person whose friend was curious about Judaism. At
last year's convention a speaker from the Jewish Outreach Institute, headed
by Rabbi Kerry Olitzky, presented on the topic of resources for
librarians; he was part of a panel addressing serving diversity in the
Jewish community. In fact, our having asked him to speak spurred him to
create the bibliography now on the web site. Here's the

[ha-Safran]: Dynamic Orthodox speakers

Here is another suggestion that I just received from a modern Orthodox
cousin: Dina Tanners

Here is another suggestion that we found really exciting. We sponsored
Rabbi/Dr. Sidney (Shnayer) Leiman as a scholar in residence at our
shul a few years ago, andhe was fabulous. He is a real scholar and has
wonderful topics to talk about
and stories to tell. I just looked up his office phone number on the Web and
it is 718-951-5542. Pass it on.

SECOND CHANCES: Transforming Bitterness to Hope and the Story of Ruth

By Levi Meier (Urim Publications, $19.95, June 2005)

About the Book:

Second Chances explores strategies that serve as models for a more positive
and optimistic life, transforming tragic circumstances into a force for
healing.

Naomi, one of the heroines of the Book of Ruth, feels completely embittered
after her husband and her two sons die in a foreign land. Yet she
rediscovers hope and shows us how we, too, can find the will, the strength
and the courage to continue in the face of seemingly insurmountable
problems and losses. Second Chances demonstrates how the biblical story of
Ruth can become a wellspring of wisdom and inspire us to act when we are
given a second chance to mend old hurts, correct old wrongs or change old
patterns.

Drawing upon years as a clinical therapist and spiritual chaplain, Rabbi
Levi Meier paints a fresh approach to the Bible and draws relevancy and
sage advice from an ancient text.

About the Author:

Rabbi Levi Meier, Ph.D., is Jewish Chaplain of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center
in Los Angeles. He is a licensed clinical psychologist, family therapist
and widely acclaimed teacher of the Bible. He has authored books on
psychology and spirituality, including his award-winning work, Ancient
Secrets, nominated as a finalist in the Spiritual category of the National
Books for a Better Life award.

Advance Praise for Second Chances:

Dr. Meiers wise and compassionate rendering of this ancient biblical tale
provides us with a profound lesson in optimism - Estelle Frankel, Author of
Sacred Therapy

The people of the Bible come off the page and we get to see ourselves in
them. Deep guidance arises for us in this way. - Rabbi Dr. Zalman
Schachter-Shalomi, Author of Hello God Its Me

People of good will, whatever their religious backgrounds, will
appreciate and be fortified by this book. - Rabbi Norman Lamm, Chancellor
of Yeshiva University

 From the Book:

Therein lies the secret of how Naomi, Ruth and others in this story deal
with all that confronts them on a personal and communal level. Theirs is a
living God, Who is with them in the good times and the bad. By living
their lives in an intimate, ongoing relationship and dialogue with Him,
they find strength and sustenance to continue along their journey. That is
the secret to their survival and it can be ours as well. - Pg. 35

A second chance and opportunity can be used to achieve anything, even
something that is seemingly fixed, closed and impossible. - Pg. 99

As we have examined the lives of Boaz and Ruth and their families, perhaps
we have come to see that their experiences are representative of all human
pain and suffering. Their lives epitomize the human condition. It is
vital that the Messiah, who is to usher in an era of redemption, emanate
from such universal human circumstances. - Pg. 114

[ha-Safran]: Remembering Jerusalem in Jewish communities

2005-03-03 Thread Avital Ordan
PLEASE EXCUSE CROSS POSTING

I've been lurking on this group for a while and have found the discussions
extremely informative.
My name is Avital Ordan and I'm a librarian at the Harman Science Library,
Hebrew University and at the Western Wall Heritage Foundation (which runs
the Western Wall Tunnels).
The foundation is in the process of creating an interactive educational
program centered on the ways the Jews worldwide remember and incorporate
Jerusalem in their lives, buildings and rituals both currently and in the
past.
We've been able to locate very little material regarding customs, activities
involving Jerusalem and objects or pictures depicting Jerusalem for several
Jewish communities, mainly New World communities: USA, Canada, Australia,
New Zealand and South American countries.
Are you aware of such customs, activities or objects? Do you know anyone
else who may know?
We would be happy to get any lead you may have.
Thank you
