Re: [ha-Safran]: List of NYC Jewish non-profits

2005-03-14 Thread Jmandjs
The UJA-Federation of New York publishes a Resource Guide but I believe it
may only include constituent and public use agencies and organizations. The
American Jewish Year Book has a directory of all Jewish organizations in
the country by state. Their list does not include synagogues. The
denominational groups have such lists but non-member synagogues may be
overlooked. Does the Jewish Yellow Pages still publish? If so that list
would help. Any other questions on Jewish organizations or synagogues in
the New York area, ask me.

[ha-Safran]: Program by Israeli filmmaker Anat Halachmi

2005-03-14 Thread Gail R Shirazi
HEBREW LANGUAGE TABLE
OFFICE OF WORKFORCE DIVERSITY
2005 National Women's History Month Planning Committee
EMBASSY OF ISRAEL
PRESENT

WHO: Anat Halachmi, Award Winning Israeli Filmmaker

WHAT: Anat Halachmi will discuss her work and show excerpts from her most
recent film "Channels of Rage" which won the BEST DOCUMENTARY AWARD at the
Jerusalem International Film Festival, 2003.

WHEN: Monday-March 28, 2005 at Noon

WHERE: Library of Congress, Mary Pickford Theater, Madison Building, 101
Independence Ave, Washington, DC

Details on the film and Ms. Halachmi are below:

Anat Halachmi is a freelance writer on cultural subjects. She produced and
researched for the book/television series The Melting Pot Cuisine about 12
Israeli families from different ethnic origins, documenting their cuisine.
Last year she wrote, directed and produced the documentary Channels of
Rage, about the rappers Subliminal and Tamer Nafer, which took the BEST
DOCUMENTARY AWARD at the Jerusalem International Film Festival, 2003.

www.channels.anatfilms.com/info

SYNOPSIS: Channels of rage

Subliminal is described in the local rap scene as the re-inventor of Hebrew
language. He presents himself as the first proud Zionist rapper. Similarly,
Tamer (TN) an Arab rapper from Lod who became a cultural icon for Israeli
Arab youth, is no less proud of his Palestinian identity. Just like Siamese
twins, Subliminal and Tamer are the two inseparable parts of the same
unsolved conflict, which defines our lives.

A patriotic Zionist rapper and a nationalist Arab rapper use the power of
words and music to state as loud as they can what politicians in Israel
cant seem to put into words.

Will the increasing national gap prevent the two from being able to
communicate with each other through their international language of music?

Channels of Rage was shot over 3 years, following both Subliminal and
Tamer, alone, and together. This is a journey documenting the
parallel-meeting-evading, back and forth story of two poets of wrath in a
violent and hopeless time.

Israel 2003, 71 min , Producer , Director, Script: Anat Halachmi, Editor:
Lavi Ben Gal, Photographer: Daniel Miran+ Anat Halachmi. Hebrew & Arabic
with Eng. subtitels,

Israeli critics (several samples) :

"one of the movies that will shake you emotionally, a film that strengthen
Israel's position as a documentary empire" ( Yossi Shoval, Maariv)

Excellent movie, with deep layers, and also an excellent sound-track, with
lots of music and laughs of the rare type (Gal Ohovsky, Maariv)

Anat Halahmi draws a tragic portrait of two rappers. An apocalyptic
frightening, and threatening vision that is coming upon all of us
.(Yehuda Stav,
Yediot Ahronot)

The Excellent movie by Anat Halachmi& shows an original angle of the
Jewish-arab
relations.(Maariv)

As you probably see in the last few days, there is a lot of discussion and
opinions around the Enc. Judaica CD-ROM on HaSafran network.

The bottom line is that the Enc. Judaica works fine, even now after 8 years
since it was released, on all computers and all operating systems.

There is ONE exactly ONE serious problem with our product for which the
solution that we have is not so great. Here is the soluition and our fix:

Runtime ERROR 2004 – out of memory:
Explanation: occurs when RAM exceeds 512MB under WIN-XP
Solution:
· The following simple solution will set-up the computer to eliminate
the ERROR, thereafter WindowsXP will edit the system.ini for you.

· Click START, then RUN and type: MSCONFIG - enter
· Select BOOT.INI
· Select ADVANCED, set MAXMEM to 512 or less.
· After Re-boot the computer will only access up to 512 MB of the
physical RAM. This setting will allow you to use the EJ CD. However, since
the RAM limit will apply to all uses we suggest that you make this
adjustment only when you want to use the EJ CD. After use you should repeat
the procedure BUT erase the figure under MAXMEM – then Re-boot. Your full
RAM will thus be restored.

However it seems from this discussion that one of our clients has found a
registry fix even for this problem. I am trying to find out how it should
be implemented and if I will succeed to get it from them there might be a
perfect solution even for this problem and I will let you and others know
about it.

Best regards,
Moshe

Re: [ha-Safran]: ********** for ALA Council

2005-03-14 Thread Bernard Katz
I must say that I'm surprised there hasn't been more discussion on this
important topic. I agree with Ted Koppel's implication that the use of
this list for ALA electioneering is inappropriate, regardless of any
individual's qualifications. I'm not a member of ALA, but I'm sure that
each official candidate for their Council is given the opportunity to
have a bio-blurb about them presented to the voing members of ALA. That's
done in CLA and OLA, to which I belong *and* to AJL! So why would we want
to clutter up our listserv with these things?

Edith Lubetski said: "I think it is a service to us to be informed of
ALA candidates who would be, at the very least, sympathetic to our
interests as AJL members. In fact, when there is an ALA election, I
would appreciate hearing from our members which candidates would
support our issues. I do not know any of the candidates personally or
professionally so that any input is helpful."

Where should this stop? Should we include comments about various people
running for public office of all kinds that would impact libraries, or
only Jewish libraries? Should we allow actual full blown lobbying? What
about having comments about people who do *not* "support our issues"?
Besides all that, what in fact ARE "our issues" and on which ones have
we registered consensus so we know which way we as a group are prepared
to allow candidates who support them to have their names touted to us?

I think this should be stopped here and now before it gets out of hand!

The Jewish Women’s Archive proudly presents In Our Own Voices: A Guide to

In Our Own Voices is a new step-by-step guide for general audiences
interested in learning how to conduct interviews with the important Jewish
women in their own lives. With a detailed how-to manual for every step of
the interview process, the guide is formulated around ten overarching
frameworks for understanding women’s life experiences. In each section,
readers will find an introductory essay by a leading scholar, a series of
key topics, exemplary stories from JWA’s oral history archives, and
hundreds of sample questions intended to help them conduct sensitive and
probing interviews about the experiences of American Jewish women.

In Our Own Voices is designed to help individuals or community groups
capture and preserve the stories of their mothers and grandmothers,
teachers and colleagues, community members and friends.

depth and variety of women’s lives. More than all our exhortations to fill
in the white spaces, this guide will yield results. It will spawn a
thousand new stories of women’s lives. I must go and interview my mother
right away!"
