Re: [Hasafran]: Thank you Rachel Kamin

2005-05-17 Thread Barbara Karp
I'd also like to extend a yasher koach to Rachel Kamin for her important
article. It, sadly, reminds me of a World Book Encyclopedia entry for
"Jerusalem" which omitted some key facts (but which did, to its credit,
describe the deterioration in the Old City under Arab control prior to 1967
and the improvements made by Israel).

As I reported a while back to the group, I wrote a
column for our temple newsletter about the very
problem Rachel addresses in her letter to SLJ. It has
been expanded into a longer article which will
apparently be published in the next Reform Judaism
magazine.
Go to: www.reformjudaismmag.org and click on: Preview

[ha-Safran]: 38 websites about Lag Ba'Omer

2005-05-17 Thread Jacob Richman
Hi Everyone!

The Jewish festival "Lag Ba'Omer" is on Friday, May 27, 2005.
If you are flying over Israel Thursday night (26th) and you
look down out of your plane, you will see thousands of bonfires
dotting the landscape as far as the eye can see. There
are various customs and explanations for these celebrations.

I posted on my website 38 links to learn about "Lag Ba'Omer".
All 38 links have been reviewed / checked this week.

The web address is:

http://www.jr.co.il/hotsites/j-hdayla.htm

Enjoy the bonfires!
Jacob

[ha-Safran]: Thank you Rachel Kamin

2005-05-17 Thread Reister, Maureen
I want to thank Rachel Kamin for the thoughtful, well-researched article
which she wrote for School Library Journal (SLJ May 2005, "Middle East
Muddle?: A reader challenges some Rosen titles" pg. 13). It is difficult
to be on your toes about every title you consider for purchase, and it is
easy to rely on reviews by SLJ, Booklist, Kirkus, etc. Many librarians
(and teachers) are unassuming about inconsistencies (or sloppy research) in
books that are published by reputable houses. I try to be careful, but I
was looking for books specifically on the Yom Kippur War and didn't look
further than the SLJ review and the reputation of Rosen Publishing when I
purchased Aaron Rosenberg's Yom Kippur War for my own library. Rachel's
article is a valuable reminder for all and I am so happy that SLJ published
it for all to see!

P.S. There were many times I found multiple favorable reviews for a title,
then read a review by an AJL member in the AJL Newsletter that made me look
twice.

With gratitude for and pride in AJL and member librarians,

Maureen
