2005-07-08 Thread David Hirsch
i have received at least 40 messages yesterday and today from other
librarians at UCLA from forwarding me messages from:

It is really getting irritating. Have other librarians experienced this? I
have told him I will not purchase from spammers.

[ha-Safran]: A book you should stock

2005-07-08 Thread hasafran

--- Message requiring your approval --
From: blond china doll <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: [ha-Safran]: A book you should stock

Overcoming the aftermath of terrorism

Given what transpired in London on July 6th-7th, 2005, this is a book for
readers who want hope as well as history.

Hannelore Heinemann Headley's "Blond China Doll: A Shanghai Interlude
1939-1953," is a warm, thought-provoking story of family survival, an
unforgettable saga of keeping hope and faith alive in terrified children; a
book for its time, which is today.

Please visit her website at

www.blondchinadoll.com

The title refers to the awe with which the Chinese greeted the blond child
after her parents fled Nazi Germany for shelter in Shanghai, a refuge that
turned hostile when her father was arrested as a spy and imprisoned for 14
months. Hannah faced a firing squad when authorities refused to believe she
could not answer questions about Papa Heinemann's activities.

It is a touching, breath-taking story and fast-paced work of literature, as
well as the tender autobiography of a child, then teenager, whose parents
braved great odds to save their family. Riveting are accounts of
Kristallnacht, the narrow escape to China, and the subsequent years in the
Jewish Ghetto of Hongkew under Japanese rule. Hannah's family eventually
emigrated to Vancouver, where she opened her first book shop to become
Canada's youngest independent book seller.

Hannah carries on with her father's bookselling tradition and owns two of
Ontario's few emporiums of rare and out-of-print books. Although legally
blind, she is writing her second memoir, this book about life in Canada, and
works daily as a bookseller.

Again, please visit her website and consider acquiring her book.

[ha-Safran]: Prescience in "Islamic Intrigue At the University"

2005-07-08 Thread Mazo
Dear Friends,

We are all aware of the horrific attacks in London. In light of these
tragic events and in order to gain an understanding of how they took place,
the book, "Islamic Intrigue At the University" by Gila Gat Tilman is a must
read!

Although notice of this book has been posted before, the prescience
connected to Tilman's story makes the notice worthwhile repeating. The
author was an Israeli PhD candidate in London in the 1970s. She discovered
herself living and learning with terrorists posing as students in the
university's research program.

The book offers a unique window on how the terrorists rooted themselves in
London, trained by the very population they later attacked.

This true story of Arab terrorism is as relevant today as it was when Gila
found herself trapped in her web of intrigue!

[ha-Safran]: Sad News

2005-07-08 Thread Ronda & Fred Rose
Dear colleagues,

Nettie Frishman, a past AJL member, passed away on July 4, 2005 she was 92
years old.

Barbara Leff a past president of AJL just informed me of Nettie Frishman's
death.

Below is a summary which Barbara wrote from the obituary which was in the
Los Angeles Times on Thursday July 7th.

Ronda Rose
President
Association of Jewish Libraries

The Obituary Announcement cites a beautiful description of Nettie as a
premier children's librarian within the Los Angeles Public Library and her
work in the national library community, including serving on the
Newbery/Caldecott Award Committee. I urge you to read it so you can
appreciate the enormous influence Nettie has had on our profession.

I asked Rita to share with us Nettie's effect specifically on the Jewish
library community -- locally and nationally:

While the LA Times obit describes Nettie's many contributions to
children's librarianship in the public sector, less well known was her
generous participation in and impact upon Judaica library service to young
readers.

Nettie was a long-time member of both national AJL and AJLSC. In
the late 70's, she served as co-chair when Rita Frischer chaired an AJLSC
city-wide, grass-roots Jewish Book Month Project. Involved were L.A.
Central Library and many LAPL branch libraries, along with the County
system, book stores, schools and other venues. Because of Nettie, LA
Central Library agreed to underwrite the printing and distribution of an
extensive bound Jewish bibliography, prepared by their bibliographer based
on their holdings. Because of Nettie, we were able to take over all the
display spaces in LA Central for a full month of Jewish books, ceremonial
objects and other appropriate exhibits. Because of Nettie, our group got
VIP treatment during a field trip to Central before their devastating fire,
and because of Nettie's warm participation in AJLSC, many AJLSC members
were quick to volunteer their help after the fire.

That's not all. In the late 70's, Nettie served on our national
AJL book award committee; it was Nettie who recruited Rita, during the
first San Francisco convention, as new chair of that committee. When Rita
suggested she would prefer the judges to have more open communication
during their considerations, it was Nettie who, drawing on her own
experiences as judge, helped Rita devise a workable system in those days
before e-mail. And when Sydney Taylor died, it was Nettie's idea that the
Award be named posthumously after this important writer who was also her
dear personal friend. Nettie made a shidduch for Rita with Ralph Taylor,
Sydney's widower; the first gold seals were printed; the endowment came
later; the rest is history. Nettie left all of us the legacy of the AJL
Sydney Taylor Award designation.

For AJLSC and for AJL, for everyone who loves children and their
books, may Nettie Frishman's memory be for a blessing.

A "Nettie Frishman Fund" has been established by LAPL Children's Services
Department, 630 W. Fifth St., Los Angles CA 90071. Donations might also be
made in her name toward the Children's Collection in your shul or school,
or to AJL Scholarship Fund (c/o Debbie Stern, Scholarship Award Chair,
Reconstructionist Rabbinical College Library, 1299 Church Road, Wyncote, PA
19095).

[ha-Safran]: Advice is cheap

2005-07-08 Thread Liza Stabler
Gentle Safraniyot and Safranim,

Okay, boys and girls, you know the rule about free advice
-- you gotta show something for it if you dole it out. So,
would all of you who have made alternate suggestions in the
last week help out by EACH of you researching (hey, you're
a librarian, after all!) one institution's conference
facilities -- in great detail. Because so many have
posted, a considerable amount of information will have been
accumulated.

To avoid duplication, let's each post to Hasafran which
institution we are choosing, then send all the information
to Fred, the national committee chair. I don't have his
e-mail here at home but you all have the directory, right?

Next week I'll be spending four nights at the National
Conference Center in Lansdowne, Virginia and will get the
appropriate information to Fred. They have kosher food
options.

Someone should look into OSU which has dorms plus a lovely
hotel for those of us who like professional, grown-up
accommodations (my own point of view, no harm intended).
Wish I'd been in the hotel when CAJE was there!

tata for now,

Liza

[ha-Safran]: re Dewey classification of siddurim

2005-07-08 Thread Rose Myers
Dear Ben,

I found at
http://www.anthus.com/CyberDewey/4-digit_DDC.html:

296 Judaism
296.1 Sources
296.3 Doctrinal, moral, social theology
296.4 Traditions, rites, public services
296.6 Leaders, organization, religious education
296.7 Religious experience, life, practice
296.8 Sects and movements

and based on it and the numbers assigned to related
books in the MARC records from the Library of
Congress, it looks like 296.4 is in the right
ballpark.

In fact, if you go to the Library of Congress search
page,

http://catalog.loc.gov/

and search for siddur, you can click on the titles and
then (on the resulting screen) click on 'full record'
and sometimes see the Dewey number for the books. Not
all books have Dewey numbers listed here, but enough
do that you can get a sense of what numbers work. If
you just use 296.4 and don't try to refine the number
to more decimal places, you can probably lump all the
prayer books there; or do you want to separate them
further?

No doubt someone will suggest that you use the Elazar
classification scheme instead. I use Dewey for my day
school library because I want the students to learn
it.

Good luck and, if I can help further, let me know.

[ha-Safran]: More on Conventions

2005-07-08 Thread Susan Pankowsky
Dear Safranim,
Gosh! Go away for 2 days and look at the string on convention info! I'm
happy to be on the National Convention Committee (which does more work than
most of you know!) if they need me. I hope that no offense was taken by my
remarks about any part of this great discussion. I know how hard it is,
(remember Atlanta and Cleveland that I helped with?) but no one will be
perfectly happy with the results.
Although I am a synagogue librarian with no resources (Federation funds are
limited now, so this trip was on me!), I can guarantee you that if all
synagogue librarians could come every 2 or 3 years, they would get
something out of the convention. Unfortunately, we are the lowest
librarian on the list for money (unless it's a big shul) and for the kind
of respect given other librarians (although you know that ain't much
either!). Even so, I can't wait to send in my PR for the convention,
because it's the only way folks know how important Judaica librarianship is
in other communities!
Thank you for whoever takes on the task of the 2007 convention. We'll be
there in whatever the venue is, wherever the accommodations are, and
whenever it is (even on Father's Day, again!).
Susan

Re: [ha-Safran]: Seek Funding?

2005-07-08 Thread tkoppel
Eli,

I think that you're misinterpreting what I said about professionalism. I
certainly didn't use the words 'glitzy' or 'fancy' to describe a convention.

Point 1: Conventions can bring several benefits to those who attend. First
and foremost is the opportunity to learn, both from speakers in the formal
sessions, and from informal colloquy with one's fellow librarians at meals
and other events. A convention at the Trump Tower (as an atrocious example
of glitz) can be utterly worthless professionally if the sessions are
poor. A convention at Motel 6 can be enormously successful if education
and learning take place. So let's put to rest phrases like "glitzy
conventions".

Point 2: I disagree with your suggestion that there is a black and white
choice between (a) providing services to the public -versus- (b) attending
conventions or meetings to better one's skills. I see them both as
important. Grass that doesn't get fertilized eventually browns and
dies. So it is with librarians - either the learn or they stagnate -
particularly in this day and age.

I would argue that improving one's skills has a direct effect on the
librarian's ability to serve one's public. Not pursuing opportunities such
as conventions is a disservice, not a benefit. If we need to educate our
funding sources to this reality, then let's start there.

Ted

That's easier to do when showing the higher-ups the
AJL accreditation form, which asks how many library

Of course, if your library doesn't even apply for
accreditation, they'll never see the form.
