[ha-Safran]: Chanukkah news
--- Message requiring your approval -- From: Jerusalem Books [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [ha-Safran]: Chanukkah news Dear Friends, While politics may bring changes the seasons and the holidays remain. As we celebrate Hannuka we usually mention more of the fun and popular material. Discover the ?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags /Land of Israel a guided tour in Israel with Talmud and Midrash, by Yossi Maimon, cat.no.57859 $18.50 or Kroyankers new book on Jaffa Street in Jerusalem (Yerushalayim Rehov Yafo/ bibliografia shel rehov sipurah she ir) cat.no. 56950 $32.00, are wonderful and are appropriate for schools, synagogues and as gifts. Since we especially like to mention the lesser known authors, artists and genres as well as the academic, institutional and mainstream published material that we normally handle, please, lets name a few. For example, in children and youth Hebrew literature, Chaim Walder has written and edited Yeladim Misaprim al Atzmam, (Kids Speak) and the author who lets kids speak about values and pressures in a way that appeals and connects to them. The author, who has become something of a haredi celebrity, has said that he has a new edition of his work which will get wide distribution by major Israeli (secular) bookstores. This edition is without orthodox children illustrated on the cover and is in keeping with the universal appeal of the authors approach. There are at least 4 in this series and a number of others for the same audience youth and their parents. Please contact Wendy for details. Another genre which merits note is the haredi graphic novels for youth. I have an interesting title - Terror Hovek Olam, hardcover illustrated color 66 page book, whose plot deals with terrorists, anti-Semitism and faith in god. Cat.no. 57171 $24.50 No less of interest is the historical graphic novel, Shmuel ha-Nagid, which tells tales of Samuel of Cordoba an 11th century leader of Spain, a political leader and advisor to Spanish Kings (of Grenada), as well as hebrew poet. The 52 page is by Arie Mahr and self published by Mahrwood Press. Cat.no. 57172 $26.50 There are other examples of this medium which combines the text with the visual and is important as a tool for teaching history as well as a widow into the thinking and philosophy of the often closed ultra orthodox world. Another very nice book is called Dvir comics for children and adults, written and illustrated by Effi Unger zl. The author published in the paper HaZofeh Le-Yiladim, and was later tragically killed by terrorists along with her husband. $14.00 My question is, are there libraries that want to collect this material? Having mentioned the lesser known youth material we cannot forget the lovely childrens book, Ha-Akhbar Shel Tamar ve-Gaya, by A.B. Yehoshua, definite, must have!!! Cat. No. 55682 $15.50 Lets not forget new CD albums by Eti Ankri, (double album collection) and David Broza. I would also like to mention an artist by the name of Ofer Golani. His first CD Da'at - meaning knowledge - has a definition of knowledge on the cover and uses the hebrew alphabet and tarot's major arcana - both systems based on 22 archetypes, as keys . This album includes a translation of Paul Simon's 50 ways to leave your Lover has become 70 ways to leave the military - A song that prompted the ban of this album from Israeli Defence forces Radio and its subsequent denial of anything done by this artist. Ofer regards Bob Dylan, Paul Simon and Leonard Cohen as 20th century Jewish prophets and in this Album (2000) was beginning his campaign for a weapons free Jerusalem. Another album is called Ruah, Wind, Spirit, and includes Jewish and Arab Israeli musicians playing and singing together for peace. I liked the rendition of the prophecy, Lo yisah goy el goy herev, in Hebrew and Arabic. $11.00. And the 3rd is called Alternative, and is jazz and alternative, folk rock in English. And this was found on the internet about it: from JERUSALEM - personal choice to turn guns to guitars. recorded in Holland with a jazz combo and banned in Israel for its anti-militaristic message it is an underground icon for those who consciously choose the ALTERNATIVE of artist to that of the soldier. Sells for about $8.00. One of the issues that we at Jerusalem Books handle every month is the phenomenon of Hebrew / Israeli books which are translations from other languages. Most libraries exclude such material preferring to collect the work in the original. Seems simple. However, any rule has its exceptions. The recent publication of Harav, Melekh ha-Moshiah, The Rebbe, The Messiah and the Scandal of Orthodox Indifference, by David Berger is such an example. The book which contains much
