[ha-Safran]: German Judaica Collection

2006-03-15 Thread Schwartz Judaica
Dear Judaica Librarians,

Schwartz Judaica has a 103-item collection of German-language
Judaica, all published before World War II, which is available for
sale to an institution as a unit. It includes books in a wide range
of topics, some published before WWI, some published between the two
world wars. They are either in German or German and another language.

We also have a small collection of 6 German-language books regarding
Germany published just before WWII and though these are not Judaica,
they may be of interest to you and can be purchased separately from
this Judaica collection.

If you have any interest in the German-language Judaica collection or
the non-Judaica collection for your institution, please let us know
and we will send pricing and a description of all the items in the collection.

All the best,
Stan & Laurel Schwartz

[ha-Safran]: Jewish Fundamentalism

Subject: Jewish Fundamentalism

Dear Colleagues

I entirely agree with Aaron Kuperman's view that the proposed heading
should be rejected, and wish to reiterate his
points. "Fundamentalism" is really a Protestant Christian term, and
should not be used in a Jewish religious context. Also as he says,
it is never used by those Jews to whom it is said to refer, and to
whom it is likely to prove offensive. It is indeed a term used by
certain secular Jews to mock Orthodox Jews.

Shalom David,
My sincere apologies for my memory lapse. I relied on what you had
included from my posting in your own message (you referred to it as
being so included further down) and of course that was only part of
what I had written, as you in fact said it was. I should have gone
back to my original posting when seeking the context of the words you quoted!

It is the 1970 edition of Parke's book that I have requested. And I
will look at your Web site.

I'm posting this to the whole list, because of my lapse, but I thank
you for your menchlikhkeyt in sending me a private message about it.

Bernard.

[ha-Safran]: New at Gefen (publication date correction)

2006-03-15 Thread Israbook Gefen Publishing House
Dear Librarians,

We accidentally posted book information about this title with the
wrong publication date. It is a new publication, which was issued in
January 2006, not January, 2005 as was previously posted on Hasafran.

Sorry about that.

By the way, this has been a very popular title. It is already in its
second printing.
For a standing order for this series send an email to me at
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Here are the details again, including the correct publication date.

Onkelos On the Torah Exodus Understanding the Bible Text Exodus
By Israel Drazin and Stanley M. Wagner
Price: $35.00
Hardcover* 408pp * ISBN 965-229-341-5*
Publish Date: January 2006

Onkelos On the Torah: Understanding the Bible Text is a unique and
remarkable translation and English commentary of the Targum Onkelos,
the first and only rabbinically authorized translation of the Torah.

The Book of Exodus, the first of this five- volume set to be
published. is a deluxe edition, which will contain the Hebrew
Massoretic text, a vocalized text of Onkelos and Rashi, Haphtarot in
Hebrew with an English translation from the Aramaic Targumim, a
scholarly appendix, and a "Beyond the Text" exploration of biblical themes.

The Book of Genesis is being readied for publication and is expected
to be released in approximately six months. The remaining volumes are
to be published in yearly intervals.

About the authors:
Israel Drazin is the author of seven books, five of which are on
Targum Onkelos. He was the first scholar to recognize that the Targum
took hundreds of items from the Tannaitic Midrashim---those that were
edited around 400 C.E.---and even incorporated many words found in
these Midrashim in his translation. He was able, therefore, to date
the Targum Onkelos around 400 C.E., a period much later than is
widely accepted, because of the Targum's reliance upon these Midrashim.

Stanley M. Wagner is Rabbi Emeritus of The Beth HaMedrosh
HaGadol-Beth Joseph Congregation in Denver, Colorado; Professor
Emeritus at the University of Denver and Founding Director and
Director Emeritus of its Center for Judaic Studies; and Founding
Director and Director Emeritus of the Mizel Museum in Denver. He
wrote, edited, or co-edited four volumes, A Piece of My Mind,
Traditions of the American Jew, Great Confrontations in Jewish
History and Great Schisms in Jewish History and was General Editor of
a six volume series entitled Christian and Jewish Traditions in the
20th Century.

Enlightening, Educational and Enjoyable

By Joe Bobker
Price: $14.95
Paperback * 352 pp * ISBN 965-229-366-0 *
Publish Date: February 2006

One of the main themes of Pesach are the 4
questions that are asked… but do not be mistaken,
there are still many other questions to be asked and lessons to be learned!

Joe Bobker addresses amusing and fascinating
questions you never thought about or perhaps
always wanted to ask, but never did! Have fun
this Pesach, entertain and enlighten your guests around the Seder table.

And You Thought There Were Only Four asks questions, such as:

What's the connection between Pesach and the blood libel?
Where in the Torah do we first read about the Exodus saga?
How many Jews originally went to Egypt?
Why did God need two messengers, Moses and Aaron?
When we sing Pesach songs, are we singing the original tunes?
How many chariots chased the Jews to the Red Sea?
What was the duration of the plagues?
What is the main purpose of Pesach?
Is it OK to eat out on Pesach?
Can I drink more than four cups of wine?
Must I read the Haggada in Hebrew?

JOE BOBKER was born in 1947 in Ulm, a displaced
persons’ camp in Germany, to Polish Holocaust
survivors Chaskel, zt”l, and Ida Bobker. On May
21, 1949 the family arrived in Sydney, Australia
onboard the Luciano Marnaro liner as refugees from Adolf Hitler’s reign.

Mr. Bobker, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of the
100-year-old Los Angeles Jewish Times, studied at
Jerusalem’s famed Mercaz HaRav Kook Yeshiva. He
has spoken frequently and has written dozens of
articles about Jews and Judaism for a variety of
newspapers. His work covers a wide variety of
Jewish subjects from a personal, philosophical –
and often whimsical – perspective.

[ha-Safran]: Re: Children books and "censorship"

2006-03-15 Thread David Elazar
First let me clarify that I writing about children books in general and not
specifically about "Three Wishes"

The following is in regard to Bernard Katz's statement:

"Israel bears some (by no means all) of the direct and indirect
responsibility for their
suffering. This so patently obvious that I think it unnecessary to go into
details."

1. As a Jew, Israeli, and Human Being, I have absolutely no guilt feelings
regarding the suffering of the Palestinians. Yes, Israel, like all nations,
is not perfect, but it is the Palestinians who have to take total blame for
their situation. In all aspects they have "missed the boat". It is very
difficult for me to find one positive thing they have done as a nation. The
Jewish People throughout our history have suffered terribly, but our
energies have been directed to bettering ourselves and contributing to
civilization and not to find blame in others or to blow others up.

2. What I am trying to point out is that we, as librarians and educators,
must not hide the fact that there are Palestinian refugees or that people
lost their homes because of war, but we must explain it within a framework
which gives the complete picture from our point of view. When we bring up
these situations it should be "us" and not the "Ellises" who influence our
children. My heart also breaks for the suffering of the Palestinian
children, but not because of Israel policies, but because of Palestinian
policies, actions, or lack of action. To discuss Palestinian suffering
without first discussing Palestinian leadership (or lack of), for example,
is basically an emotional exercise.

3. We must not forget that we are in conflict with the Palestinians,
fighting terrorism is war, and in war people suffer. "Conflict solution" has
not worked, so now we are entering the period of "conflict management"
trying to keeping the suffering on both side down to a minimum, while making
sure that we in Israel live as normal a life as possible. Normal life for
the Palestinians is the responsibility of the Palestinian leadership
(burning of the British Council in Gaza yesterday is an example of making
their "normal life" more difficult.)."

4. I repeat, with limited budgets, let's be very selective to which books we
expose our children, and very careful as to how we expose them to what
Bernard calls "certain uncomfortable facts" and which I call "facts out of
context".

David

[ha-Safran]: Passover Haggadah

2006-03-15 Thread Westmount Routes Office
BS"D

Dear Eve Panzer,

What might be helpful is to review the descriptions on the following
websites -
http://www.artscroll.com/haggadahs.html

and
http://www.feldheim.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?category=51

and when you find a few that sound promising, e-mail the Ha-Safran
list and see if anyone can provide you with a review for the ones
that made it to your shortlist.

A smaller press than the two mentioned above, but one that I might
call "small but mighty," is Leviathan Press.
http://www.jewishcheatsheets.com/JLF_catalog_0.htm.

They are the makers of the "Judaism in a nut shell" series. I can
recommend their book PASSOVER - JUDAISM IN A NUTSHELL
http://www.jewishcheatsheets.com/JLF_books_passover2_0.htm

which I have, as an excellent overview book. Their PASSOVER SURVIVAL
KIT
http://www.jewishcheatsheets.com/JLF_books_passover_0.htm

is a larger book than the previous title but is an excellent resource
to use in preparation for the holiday. Even the cover illustration
alone is worth to see the book. I am sure that that illustrator,
Toronto native Mr. Julius Ciss must have been at one of my families'
sederim in the past. I could tell you which of my relatives each
person in the picture must be, but I won't tell you which one I would
have been! Even the haggadahs pictured and the bottle of wine (which
he skilfully obscured half of its name) was the same that we used
"back in the day!" Although the website lists the book as no longer
available it is still well worth borrowing from the library or a friend.

The good news is that the family haggadah based on this book is still
available - THE SURVIVAL KIT FAMILY HAGGADAH -
http://www.jewishcheatsheets.com/JLF_books_haggadah_0.htm.

I'd recommend reviewing this one to see if it meets your needs.

This year I am going to try
Let
My People Go Haggadah by The Chofetz Chaim
http://www.feldheim.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?item=1-58330-095-3&type=store&category=51

I look forward to seeing your "shortlist" and "final selection."

Be well!

Yours truly,

Jeff Corbett

[ha-Safran]: Lieberman Talmud Databank

2006-03-15 Thread Deborah Stern
I'm interested in purchasing the Lieberman Talmud Databank that
Yisrael Dubitsky advertised on Hasafran last week. Is anyone else
interested, so we can get together and try to get a discounted price?

[ha-Safran]: Re: Children books and "censorship"

2006-03-15 Thread Bernard Katz
I thank David for continuing this discussion on a good level and now in
a general line for all children's books. It is very important to have
an exchange like this, only I would hope that it could become a
'round-table' discussion involving more of us. With that hope, I'll
respond to David's points in order.

1. Just to be clear, I have no interest in promoting "guilt feelings"
but I don't believe that "it is the Palestinians who have to take
total blame for their situation". That statement implies Israel's
actions are always taken without any choice as to how to respond.
This is completely false. There are many instances of individual
actions both at the command level in the IDF and regarding
individuals' decisions on how to act that deny the humanity of
Palestinians and in particular, Palestinian women and children.
ANYONE who reads Ha'aretz, the Jerusalem Report, Jerusalem Post and
other news services will be familiar to a greater or lesser degree
with the many many examples. They are also reported on B'Tselem's (The
Israeli Information Centre for Human Rights In the Occupied Territories)
Web site .

All human beings were created in G-d's image and we are bound by
Jewish values to recognize this as a moral value even in times of
war. There also are international conventions regarding the conduct
of war which set down standards of behaviour, or red lines, which
Israel has agreed not to cross.
If someone says in defence of certain IDF actions (collectively or by
individual soldiers) that the other side behaves as badly or even
worse, that is no defence at all. Why should Jewish soldiers emulate
the worst actions of our enemies? That leads to corruption of our
Jewish values and ultimately to the corruption of those who undertake
those actions. If a book omits the negative side of war and terror,
and only tells about the glory of being a shahid (suicide bomber
martyr), or of the 'purity of arms' of the IDF, it is lying to
children about the conflict. I think it was Golda Meir who once said
that the thing she resented the most about the Palestinians was that
they forced Israel to train her youth to become killers of human beings.

I concur with David's sentiment, if not all of his actual words, that
the Palestinian leadership has been very very destructive rather than
giving positive direction to their people. This is not true of all of
them, but generally speaking it is true and a terrible burden to
them, in my view. But that doesn't acquit Israel in terms of its
choices and actions.

2. Here, David opens his heart to the suffering of Palestinian
children yet he clearly does not assign ANY responsibility to
israel's actions - which takes us back to his point 1. It's as if it
were the Palestinians, for example, who decreed the demolition
penalty for a family's home if a member of the family became a
terrorist. That is an Israeli policy of choice. David would like to
see no books written by "Ellises" but only by "us", by which I take
it he means Jews, or at least Jews who are prepared to "explain it
within a framework which gives the complete picture from our point of
view", by which I take it he means lay all the blame on the
Palestinians and reject any responsibility falling on Israel. So
that's back to point 1. again.

Nevertheless, I do agree that it is important, essential to note that the
progressive leadership within Palestinian society was minimal, and
that their leaders' calls to action were followed by the bulk of
Palestinians, such as what happened in 1947-49. At the same time, we
must not omit the actions carried out by israel and Israelis during
that period: both the good stuff and the shocking stuff - and I don't
mean only Deir Yassin. I was fed a pap of whitewashed so-called
history in kheder that I still see reflected in so many children's
and adult books today. Anyone on this list who has not read Benny
Morris' Birth of the Palestinian Refugee Problem Revisited (Cambridge
Univ. Press, 2004) - a shocking 640 pages - ought to do so, in order
to learn what happened on the Israeli side of that war.

3. David asks good questions here. How indeed are we Jews, both
inside and outside eretz going to live "normal lives" during a time
of conflict, of terror and war? If the direction now is, as David
says, rather one of "conflict management" instead of "Conflict
solution", then I would have expected much more management smarts and
far less violence, provocation and other dismal actions on the part
of Israel. The more extreme elements in the "settlers' movement" for
example (not a quote from David) continue to be allowed to provoke
Palestinian civilians, harm Palestinian children and generally to run
rampant over Israel's own rules that supposedly govern their
behaviour in the West Bank. Israel has not removed even a majority of
the outposts and instant settlements that it has declared illegal.
Israel has no

[ha-Safran]: re: patron request

2006-03-15 Thread Eileen Polk
Dear Hasafranim,

A patron has asked me about a book, but she cannot remember the
title. She thinks it was published within the last 3-4 years, and is
non-fiction. It is about two sisters who are being raised as
Catholics by their parents who have European accents, but the mother
has told them they are not to take communion at church. They also
follow some traditions that are different from their Christian
friends. It turns out that the parents are Holocaust survivors.

Does anyone know the title of this book? I would appreciate any help.

Thank you,

Eileen Polk, Librarian

Safranim ve-safraniyot,

The table of contents for the forthcoming volume 12 of Judaica

the printer, and while it will still take a little while to get it
all proofread, printed, and mailed I think that the official
publication date of Spring 2006 is not too far off the mark.

[ha-Safran]: Librarian opening in Queens New York yeshiva

2006-03-15 Thread Diane Romm
Exciting opportunity for experienced librarian to help create a new
N-8 yeshiva library in New York.

Yeshivah Har Torah, a 16-year old coeducational yeshiva with a
child-centered approach to education, has moved into its new state of
the art facility in Bellerose, Queens. The school is looking for an
experienced librarian to transform the huge area it has allocated for
its library into a dynamic instructional space.

The position for the 2006-2007 school year will be a part time one,
but is expected to become full time as of the following school
year. In the first year, the librarian will over! see the completion
of the physical interior of the library, weed and select from the
existing legacy book collection, and implement a new library automation system.

Once the facility is up and running, the librarian will be involved
in collection development and library instruction.

We are seeking an experienced individual who is excited about working
with students and teachers and looking forward to meeting the
challenges of creating a new library media center.
