Re: [ha-Safran]: Jews buying books
--- Message requiring your approval -- From: alba toscano [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [ha-Safran]: Jews buying books I don't doubt that Jews might buy books, but what kind? Judaica-type or the Nancy Drew Goes Camping-type? I'm feeling a little weird and expansive this morning so bear with me a second (or hit the delete button). Book-buying by jewish persons has to be a country specific phenomena. Just off the top of my head, if someone semi-literate lives in Israel there's a good chance that they're jewish and that they'll keep right on being so no matter whether they buy the former or the latter type of book. So it comes as little surprise that jews in Israel buy a lot of books. Let's go with the country-specific former-type-of books: Judaica. Do jewish persons buy judaica in Spain for example? Someone sent me an article in english from some jewishy american newspaper bulletin whatever, written by some american-jewish-american tourists who spent 47 minutes in Barcelona last summer: In Barcelona the jewish community has a publishing company. Wrong. Some 35 years ago Rafa and Elisa, a nice catholic couple, got into the business of editing original material written mostly by cristians about the spanish medievel and urban-legended jews. They also took to distributing books largely from Israel. They barely eke out a living. Rafa told me once that he got into the business to help out the jewish community but had he known that his possible jewish customers would blow it all off and he'd end up selling almost exclusively to cristians he would have never taken the bait. As far as I can tell, the jewish community (whatever that is from a spain point of view, I'll keep you posted if I ever figure it out), can't be bothered with actually buying this stuff and outside of the occasional re-issue of a WIZO cookbook originally slapped together by the ladies's league at the orthodox community in Madrid in 1984 marketed for internal consumuption, there just isn't anything out there that jewish people are going to lay down soft cash on a hard barrelhead for. Like who needs another cookbook anyway? From personal experience, if we're talking jewish persons buying jewishyish books, there's not a single book with jewish-type information that I have ever tried to sell that a jewish person actually bought willingly. Maybe it's because they're all immigrants and books are heavy when you're on the move. In Madrid, some jewish people have a used/new mail-order sort of business called Hebraica. And then there's Raices the only jewish-y-ish magazine in Spain. Hebraica tells me they sell stuff but mostly to cristians. Many cristians who buy jewishy books later donate them to the La Javurá library. Love those guys. When they ask me for suggestions about what they should buy, I take a quick look into the La Javura library to see what we might be missing. Sure wish some cristian would buy a complete set of the Talmud in spanish. RE: [ha-Safran]: Jews buying books
As the percentage of Jews who are Orthodox increases, which has been the case for a generation, the impact on Jewish publishing and book purchasing will become increasingly apparent. Many Orthodox publishers are not part of the mainstream of the book distribution network but have their own network, meaning that purchases from the Orhtodox/Hareidi stream will not be reflected in statistical measures such as the one that led to the conclusion that Jews are buying fewer books. I would not be surprised if Jews are buying fewer secular books compared to the numbers 50 years ago (when there were more Jews in the United States, and very few were Orthodox, at least as the term is now understood). RE: [ha-Safran]: Jews buying books
I've heard unofficial statistics from the Jewish Book Council that Jews buy about 20% of the books sold in the U.S.. I've also heard that Jews are the religious group that buys the most books. Episcopalians were second. [ha-Safran]: Jews and book buying
I think the issue here is not that Jews don't buy many books, but that we are only a small percentage of the population of the US. I believe that I read somewhere that the largest block of book buying in this country is Christian books. This includes not only Bible stories and all kinds of inspirational type literature but a vast genre of Christian fiction. Since Christians are the majority population in the U.S., the sheer numbers of these books is very high. If you have travelled much in the rural areas of this country, you will find in Shopping Malls, Christian or Bible Bookstores. I have been in these bookstores to see what kind of Bible stories for children are available and been amazed at the the sheer numbers of books that I had no idea existed. A major summer activity in these rural area is the Summer Bible camp where these books are also featured. You will not find these books on the New York Times Bestseller lists, but I have come across catalogs from Ingram listing this genre. So that may be the basis for the statement about Jews and Book buying. Helene Tuchman, Librarian The Rabbi Marshall R. [ha-Safran]: Biblical wall maps
I received my set of 26 maps today from Manna, they were shipped to Australia in only a week. The set comprises 13 maps that are double sided, 26 maps in total.I chose to purchase them not laminated, as some are new Testament maps backed on to Biblical maps. I will probably cover those maps with white paper before laminating so the other side can be viewed. They are excellent quality and good value. Re: [ha-Safran]: Jews and book buying
Helene -- A follow up to your note. In addition to the quantity of bible material available primarily through religious stores (and websites) there are also lots of presses that publish only christian -- and specifically Evangelical -- books. A notable example is that many people had never heard of the publisher (I forget who it is) of the Born Again series till sales hit the multi-millions. But in fact they have been around for quite a while. Also, look at the popularity of the various preachers' books -- Joel Osteen, etc. Many of them are primarily sold either online or through the churches that agree with the author's point of view. I'm also aware that there's a large underground world of Christian CD's and music. It too isn't always noticeable to the general public, especially in the metropolitan areas. But it sells in very large numbers. Therefore, it's not entirely surprising that we don't show up as enormous book buyers when all of these trends are taken into account. On the othner hand, we do probably purchase (and borrow from libraries) a large percentage of the Trade books on a number of topics. I'd suspect as well that our interests are wider than the bulk of the country.
