[Hasafran]: New Free Passover Clipart

2006-04-05 Thread Jacob Richman
Hi Everyone!

I just added new Passover clipart to the
Jewish Clipart Database at:

http://www.j.co.il

The 26 new graphics (x 3 sizes) include the 10 plagues with
Hebrew quotes on the larger size graphics.

Whether you need a picture for your child's class project,
a graphic for your synagogue, Hillel or JCC Passover
announcement, the Jewish Clipart Database has the pictures
for you. You can copy, save and print the graphics in
three different sizes.

Enjoy!
Happy Passover,
Jacob

The Jews of Sing-Sing
Ron Arons
Nationally known scholar Ron Arons tells the true story of Jewish
gangsters and other shady characters who served time "up the river"
and the NY Jewish community's response. Arons's interest in Jewish
inmates incarcerated at the infamous prison in Ossining, New York
started after discovering, in the 1900 U.S. Federal Census, that his
great-grandfather Isaac served four years at Sing Sing. Further
genealogical research revealed two additional instances, in 1916 and
1925, where Isaac found himself the subject of a criminal investigation.
In 1908, New York City Police Commissioner Bingham claimed that
Jewish criminals committed one-half of all crimes in the city. The
Jewish community responded to Bingham's charge by claiming that Jews
held the moral high ground and, beyond a few gangsters, did not
commit crimes. Despite their public response, the Jewish community
was well aware of its own criminality and set up various
organizations to address the problem. Due to its proximity to New
York City, Sing Sing prison has housed thousands of Jewish criminals
from 1880 - 1950 including numerous minor offenders, notorious
gangsters, and the only civilians to be executed for treason (Julius
and Ethel Rosenberg). Today, the inmate population of Sing Sing still
includes Jewish felons, although their numbers are considerably less
than in previous years.

Ron Arons has earned degrees from Princeton University and the
University of Chicago, and is a member of both the Los Angeles and
San Francisco Jewish Genealogical Societies. As a seasoned
genealogist, Arons has traced his roots to England, Poland, Romania,
Ukraine, Belarus, and Lithuania. As a recipient of the 2005 Hackman
Research Residency Award, Arons' current research focuses on both
famous and lesser-known Jewish criminals.

[Hasafran]: Jerusalem Books Pesah Newsletter

2006-04-05 Thread Nancy Sack

From: Jerusalem Books <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: [Hasafran]: Jerusalem Books Pesah Newsletter

Dear Friends,

Now that the elections festivities are over in
Israel we can get down to our holiday plans for
Passover. With a little luck, not only will we be
blessed with guests at our Seder table at the
Spitzer household in Jerusalem, but we will
celebrate Mimouna, (a Moroccan Jewish festival) a
day after the Pesah holiday in Eilat.

One of the hottest books in Israel, perhaps to
take on a long weekend, is Meir Shalev’s latest,
‘Yonah ve-Na'ar' - published by Am Oved and
little has to be said about Meir Shalev's
books. They are bestsellers and always a welcome
addition to any library. Cat.no. 59111 $22.00

In addition although, Tomy Lapid’s Shinui party
self destructed, his son Yair Lapid has come out
with another novel, “Ha-Isha
ha-Shni’ah,’Published by Keshet, softcover, 288 pages. Cat. #58612 $20.00

In the area of Holocaust, we would like to remind
those who haven’t already heard that Yossi Sarid,
(former MK and head of Meretz), wrote a book
called, ‘Pepichik,’ about a boy who survives
Auschwitz concentration camp only remembering his
‘nickname’ that his mother called him by when
they were separated and she was sent to her
death. This moving an important work of
non-fiction is a worthwhile addition to any
collection of holocaust books. Cat.no. 58622 $17.00

An important relatively new publisher worth
noting, Mazo Publishing, has come out with a new
holocaust history/memoire entitled, ‘An Odyssey
of Survival,’ by Dr. Michael Klein. It
chronicles the personal tragedy of his family
from Janosalma, Hungary through the ghetto,
deportation, Auschwitz, Budapest and
rebuilding. It contains important history
(including Camp Golleschau and ‘Oscar Schindler’s
Forced Labor Camp..), as well as insights into
Jewish Identity, Culture and Philosophy. Isbn
965-7344-06-9. Cat.# 59319 $16.00

Lastly, in this category, Tuvia Friedman, has
published a history, auto-biography, ’60 Years –
Nazi Hunter,’ published by his Institute of
Documentation in Haifa, Israel. This amazing
fighter for justice contributed to the
apprehension and prosecutions of Nazi War
criminals but equally important has been his
tireless role in the documentation and teaching
of Holocaust studies throughout his life. Cat.no. 59313 $55.00

Regarding Haggadot I would just like to note that
there is a scholarly side to this common and
popular item. In the past weeks we have seen a
Rav Kook Haggada, with intro by R’ Aviner,
published in Bet El, Cat. # 59432 $13.00 and The
Tekhelet Mordekhai Haggadah, by R’ Mordekhai
Elon, isbn 965-09-0194-9, published by Reuven
Mass, Cat # 59433 $14.00. This stream includes
many Haggadot with significant commentaries and
reflecting the customs of many Jewish communities.

We wish all of you a Happy Holiday, from all of us at Jerusalem Books.

Sincerely,

Jeff

[Hasafran]: Collection Development policy models?

2006-04-05 Thread JAMES LAFOREST
Hi,
I recently began writing a collection development policy for the
small (about 2000 volumes) library at Cornell Hillel where I work.

I have focused on defining our collection as primarily devoted to the
support of programming. I define programming in two ways, broadly
and narrowly: Broadly defined our collection includes materials for
the entertainment and Jewish education of the Cornell Jewish
community. Narrowly defined, our collection includes materials that
support Hillel programs directly and study between the rabbinic staff
and interested students/community members (music for holidays, core
Jewish texts, DVDs on Jewish topics.)

Weeding is a major concern - dealing with staff that is generally
friendly to libraries but concerned about disposing of books required
explaining why it is important to weed and how it is done. In
weeding! it is important to consider such things as: is the item
valuable, replaceable, a duplicate, available elsewhere locally, a
gift that you shouldn't get rid of, damaged, out of date, not
appropriate for the library in question.

You can also define what you accept as gifts.

I currently just have a rough draft, but I would be happy to send it
to you if you would like to see it. Contact me privately.

Cordially,
James LaForest

Safranim:
One of our patrons is trying to locate an interview with the then deputy
of Arafat, Abu Jihad (also known as Khalil Wazir), conducted in Tunis
just prior to his targeted killing by Israel in 1988. He seems to
recall that it was published in an American news magazine, but is not
absolutely certain of this. Any assistance in locating this interview
will be greatly appreciated. With thanks, Zvi Erenyi, Gottesman Library,

2006-04-05 Thread Yosef Branse
Shalom,

A database search turned up something that might be what you are
looking for - an article in Arabic entitled
the Arabic publication Al-Dustour, Vol. 18, No. 530 (April 1988), pp. 13-15.

An abstract of the article in the Dayan Center Bibliography (from
Tel-Aviv University) reads:

AN INTERVIEW IN APRIL, 1988 WITH PLO DEPUTY COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF KHALIL
AL-WAZIR (ABU JIHAD),ON PALESTINIAN MILITARY ACTIVITIES.THE ACTIONS
OF FATH FORCES ON ISRAEL'S BORDERS ARE INTENDED TO FRIGHTEN ISRAELI
CIVILIANS AND END ZIONIST
IMMIGRATION TO PALESTINE. ONLY THROUGH THE USE OF WEAPONS DO THE
PALESTINIANS RECEIVE INTERNATIONAL ATTENTION.
ARAB CUSTODIANSHIP OVER THE PALESTINIANS HAS HARMED AND ISOLATED THEM.
FATH APPROVES OF PALESTINIAN MILITARY ACTIVITIES WITHIN PALESTINE BUT
NOT OUTSIDE ITS BORDERS.
THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TERRORISM AND NATIONAL STRUGGLE,WHICH
IS LEGITIMATE.

I don't know how you might obtain a copy of the original article, or
a translation.
Good luck.
