Re: [ha-Safran]: Sydney Taylor Club

2006-07-07 Thread Susan Dubin
We have a Sydney Taylor Book Club at our school. To belong, a student
must read one of the All-of-a-kind Family books and six books that have
won a Sydney Taylor Medal or Honor. Each year they can renew their
membership by reading an additional Medal or Honor book. They get a
certificate and an official Sydney Taylor Club Badge (a paper circle
with a Jewish Star in the middle and the word Sydney Taylor Club Member
around the outside.) Being in Sydney Taylor Club earns them $1 off on a
purchase at our book fair and special time with authors who visit the
school.

[ha-Safran]: AJL Convention handouts

2006-07-07 Thread ilanhigh
Much thanks to the AJL for coordinating such a jam packed
information filled conference. As an administrator working partially
as an untrained librarian I gained an enormous amount from many of
the different sessions.

Somehow I misplaced two handouts: One from the session on electronic
resources and the other from the session about Islamic bias in our
text books. Is there a way to get copies of these? I am especially
interested in the web sites that evaluate text books.

Thank you,

[ha-Safran]: Frankel Mishneh Torah

2006-07-07 Thread Yisrael Dubitsky
As a correction or update to my post on May 9, I am happy to report
that Rambam's Mishneh Torah published by the S Frankel press is now
complete, including Sefer Ahavah. The copy I have seen is part of a 7
volume edition which includes all 14 books of the Mishneh Torah as
well as the [Hebrew translation of] Sefer haMitsvot (which is
separate and distinct from the MT but inasmuch as it represents an
outline of the material developed in extenso in the MT, it is often
seen as an introduction to it). When, indeed whether, a separate
volume of just Sefer Ahavah will be released, I do not know.

As the Talmud might put it, "Yoma tava le-rabanan."

Mordicai Gerstein wins award for 'Sholom's Treasure'

By Lauren Kramer

Mordicai Gerstein has a passion for making books, one that is clearly
seen when you read his work and witness his illustrations.

"I think that making books, or any kind of art, might also be like
mining," he philosophizes on his Web site. "The artist digs into his
or her life and imagination and never knows what they'll find. That's
the adventure."

Those words rang especially true when Gerstein got a call from
Beverly Reingold, executive editor at the publishing house Farrar,
Straus and Giroux in New York. Reingold had a gut feeling that his
illustrations would be the perfect accompaniment to a picture book
biography on Sholom Aleichem by Los Angeles writer Erica Silverman.

As it turns out, she was spot on.

Gerstein, an award-winning writer and illustrator who lives in
Western Massachusetts with his wife, Susan Yard Harris and their
daughter, Risa, had a keen personal interest in helping create this
book because it hearkened back to his own family roots. His maternal
grandparents hailed from a shtetl in Russia, while his father came from Poland.

"It appealed to me to try and recreate the world of Sholom Aleichem,
and the world of my ancestors - to make a shtetl between the covers," he says.
Gerstein embarked on a process of researching photographic material
of Jewish communities in the late 19th and early 20th centuries,
reading books and biographical material to learn about how people
lived and what they looked like.

His research and talent, coupled with Silverman's writing, were a
winning combination. The book, "Sholom's Treasure: How Sholom
Aleichem Became a Writer," recently won the 2006 gold medal in the
Sydney Taylor Book Award's Young Readers Category. On June 21,
Silverman and Gerstein met for the first time in Cambridge during the
Association of Jewish Libraries 41st Annual Convention, where they
accepted the award.

"This book had a perfect marriage of illustration and text," enthuses
Heidi Estrin, chairperson of the Sidney Taylor Book Award Committee
at the Association of Jewish Libraries. "You can tell that the author
and illustrator were doing this because they loved the topic and
enjoyed the process of creating the book. As a result, the reader
enjoys it, too."

Silverman, a published children's book author since 1989, read Sholom
Aleichem's autobiography while working on another book that contained
an adaptation of one of his stories.

"The idea of writing a picture book biography started forming then,
because Sholom was a child full of life and spirit," she says. "He
was bright, compassionate, yet a tremendous trouble-maker, and I
thought he'd have great appeal to children."

The Sydney Taylor award committee immediately identified with that
appeal and was struck by the book's universality.

"In selecting an award-winning book, we're looking not just for
Jewish content but for books that are well written and universal in
some ways, so that a wide readership, including but not limited to
Jewish readers, would find them interesting," Estrin says.

"This book really makes the character of Sholom accessible," she
continues. It's based on actual anecdotes about his life and
communicates what an interesting person he was - a daredevil, a
prankster, and a man with a real way of words. The illustrations form
a very active story so you can see what's happening - even, for
example, as he makes faces to copy his school teacher."

Silverman said that having Gerstein illustrate her picture biography
was a match made in heaven.

"My publisher approached him, and I was thrilled that he was
interested," she confesses. "Before this, I knew his work and admired
him greatly. And I think Mordicai's art was the perfect vehicle in
bringing my words to life."

Gerstein is thrilled to have participated in this book, and expresses
dismay at how little known Sholom Aleichem is, even within the Jewish
community today.

"He was called the Jewish Mark Twain in the time when he was writing,
and he should be better known," he says. "I thought because of
'Fiddler on the Roof' that his name would be more familiar to people,
but it's not. I'm delighted that Erica came up with his biography,
and I hope it will encourage more awareness of this great writer."

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Gerstein had always wanted to be a
painter. He attended the Chouinard Institute of Art before moving to
New York in 1957, where he lived and work for 25 years making
animated films for television. In 1970, he met author Elizabeth Le
