In Israel
Hello, I am in Israel. I'be been here since the end of June and will leave on Sunday. We've mostly been in the Hof Ashkelon;/Kiryat Malachi area so know about the Qassam attacks from Gaza but also have just returned from visiting friends just south of the Kinneret for 5 days so have a feel for that part of the country too. If anyone cares for an update from yesterday, let me know, and I will send it out. [ha-Safran]: Out-of-Print Books Task Force
A Final Report from Anna Olswanger, Chair Out-of-Print Books Task Force I'm glad I got to meet some of you at the convention in Boston. Earlier in the year I had notified Linda Silver that I would have to relinquish the chair of the Task Force. I explained that my overall professional goal remained the same: to help bring more good Jewish books for kids into the world, but in 2005, I became a literary agent, and that job is now demanding my focus. I'm happy to report that the new Chair of the Task Force is Norman Finkelstein. For the moment, Norman will be following the procedure we established in 2004, and followed in 2005, to pursue the reissue of favorite out-of-print books: Soliciting regular wish lists from AJL members, contacting the old publishers with AJL's bring-the-book-back-into-print request, contacting the authors to suggest that they take advantage of the Authors Guild Print-on-Demand program to reissue their book, and at the end of the year, sending a list of the year's Back-into-Print Wish List to publishers known for republishing out-of-print children's books. Norman want to do things differently, so look for his announcements on Hasafran. I have enjoyed working with AJL on this project. Unlike many publishers, who champion a book because it makes economical sense, AJL members champion books because it makes intellectual and emotional sense for the children they work with. I find that reassuring in our product-driven book world. I hope everybody has a good summer. May we soon see an end to the bombings in Israel. RE: [ha-Safran]: Library use lessons
Subject: RE: [ha-Safran]: Library use lessons Dear Basya, When teaching certain aspects of using the library, like how to prepare a bibliography or do research online, I will do the work on the computer and make transparencies from the computer screen. There are transparencies that work in inkjet or laser printers. I used to make a copy and then use the photocopy machine to make the transparencies using a different type of transparency (that is meant for photocopy machines). I find that using this format can help to organize the lesson. I never use transparencies for the entire lesson. I also go into the classroom to give lessons and bring materials with me. The library itself can sometimes be more distracting than being in a familiar (for the students) place. I do have lessons in the library when I want the students to have an opportunity to use the facility after I have given them some direction. There are a lot of sample lessons out there on the web. I will sometimes check out what is available and then tailor it to suit my needs. BAsically, I work from what is requested by the teacher. That becomes my aim rather explicitly and then I decide how to develop towards the goal that has been stated. I will explain a technique and then show an example to help clarify. Depending on how many points I wish to make, I will use more or less examples. I will take questions at any time although I will sometimes ask for patience until I finish a sentence and/or point. Sometimes, I do not use the entire period even if I answer questions and I will just end early without belaboring the points that I have just made. I do discuss that ahead of time that I might end early (but as a rule, I do use the full 40 minute period). Good luck. It is more fun working one-on-one, but you reach more students in the class. I always end my lesson with an invitation to come to the library for more help and individualized instruction. After you have done your first lesson, you will refine the lesson. Some lessons work better than others - sometimes it's the interest of the students, sometimes it's the group of students, and sometimes it's just that particular day that makes the lesson better or worse. You just have to go with the flow and try to get your information across in as interesting a manner as you can to keep the students' attention. I hope this helps.
