[ha-Safran]: Dutch has been added to Learn Hebrew with audio website

2006-09-20 Thread Jacob Richman
Hi Everyone!

Today I added Dutch (menu, translations and transliterations)
to the Learn Hebrew site at:
http://www.learn-hebrew.co.il

Learn Hebrew is a free, on-line, educational resource
to learn Hebrew words. The flash site incorporates
46 topics, along with over 1,700 Hebrew words and
phrases. Each Hebrew word is presented as an image
with nikud [vowels]. When you click on a word, or
phrase, you can hear it spoken. The high quality audio
was created in a sound studio.

The site is multilingual. The menus, transliterations and
translations are in five languages: English, French,
Russian, Spanish and Dutch.

Both the student and the teacher will find the site easy to use
and very educational. As mentioned, the site is free to all.

Feedback (in English) is welcome.

Please forward this message to others who may be interested
in learning Hebrew. Thank you!

Shana Tova - Have a Good Year,
Jacob

JEWISH BUENOS AIRES

An NEH Summer Seminar for College and University
Teachers, to be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina
between July 9 and July 27, 2007, under the direction of David William Foster

The seminar will focus on six major works of
Argentine Jewish writers, basically from the
twentieth century. Through a detailed
examination of these works as literary texts
that interpret the Jewish immigrant experience
in Buenos Aires, the seminar will provide 15
participants with an important grounding in
Argentine urban immigrant culture. Participants
will be college and university professors of
Latin American studies, some of whom may have
some familiarity with Argentine. The latter will
have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge
of Argentine literature, while other
participants will receive a solid introduction
to Argentine Jewish culture through major
literary texts. The language of the seminar will
be Spanish, and participants must have an
advanced command of the language for purposes of
reading the texts, discussing them, and
preparing written essays. An important aspect of
the seminar will be several lunches a week with
prominent Jewish artists, intellectuals, and
writers ("Almorzando con Buenos Aires Judío").

Visit the website of the 2006 seminar on
Contemporary Urban Brazilian Culture:
http://www.public.asu.edu/~atdwf/neh_summer/.
Once it is up (probably sometime in September),
the website of the 2007 seminar will be found at
http://www.public.asu.edu/~atdwf/neh_summerBA/.

[hasafran]: Seeking information about employment in Israel

2006-09-20 Thread hasafran

--- Message requiring your approval --

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: [ha-Safran]: Seeking information about
employment in Israel as a English speaking
librarian and information specialist.

TITLE: Seeking information about employment in Israel
as an English speaking librarian and information specialist.

Hello:

My name is Robert Goodman. Â I would like to
take a moment of your time to ask anyone on the
list for some career advice and guidance on how
I may find work and get hired as a librarian
and/or information systems specialist in
Israel. Whether you've worked in Israel,
considered working in Israel, or know of someone
in Israel that you think I could benefit talking
with, I'd like to hear from you.

I will be in Israel from October 4 to 24, 2006.
During my first visit to Israel, in addition
to touring the country, I would like to arrange
some short 20 to 30 minute “fact finding”
interviews with librarians and information
systems specialists working at public libraries,
colleges and universities, hospitals, corporate
libraries and information centers, and companies
that perform library-related or information
systems-related work in Israel and possibly with the United States.

I want to find ways that I could support myself
as an English speaking American with limited
Hebrew fluency were I to be a potential new
student studying in Israel for the short term
(3, 6, or 12 months), or perhaps the long term
as a new “oleh” (new citizen) to Israel.

The areas of work that interest me include, but are not limited to:

1. Â Â Â Â Library science, knowledge
management, electronic and print document
management, archiving, records management, and medical informatics.

2. Â Â Â Â Any kind of other technically
related information systems work like database
management or Web design (areas that I would like to increase my skills).

I presently work for the National Library of
Medicine (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/), under the
National Institutes of Health
(http://www.nih.gov) as a medical
librarian.  My primary duties include
cataloging books and other bibliographic
materials used by medical professionals. My
degrees are from Drexel University (1998). I
also hold a certificate in Judaica librarianship
(1998) with two and a half years experience as a
library assistant at Gratz College
(http://www.gratz.edu/).

I have previous experience with electronic
document management and workflow systems,
records management, Windows NT, e-mail, and SQL
systems administration, and some limited
networking and database design experience.

Were work as a librarian or information systems
specialist immediately unavailable to me as a
non-fluent Hebrew speaker, I would need to
consider other areas of work to support myself
and find ways to enter the library and
information systems fields as soon as
possible. Alternative suggestions from the list would be very welcome.

Thank you for your assistance. Â I appreciate
whatever help you can offer and I look forward
to your response. Â My contact information follows.

Warm regards,

Rob Goodman.
