[ha-Safran]: Re: Thora book [sic]

2006-10-04 Thread Bernard Katz
I wonder whether there are any other members of this list that share
my suspicions about the phrase "became into a private collection" in
this offer of a 16th C Torah from the Central Museum of Real History [sic],
Uzbekistan? In my opinion, it would be helpful if the seller were able
to provide clear legal transfer of title and subsequent provenance...

Re: [ha-Safran]: Blackberries and Yom Kippur

2006-10-04 Thread Bernard Katz
Thank you Yoel Sheridan for the evocative excerpt from your longer
work. Not too many years ago there was a wonderful feature film made
in Britain about two young brothers who were evacuated to Brighton (I
think) and had to stay with a non-Jewish married couple, who were
rather 'mean' to them in many ways - I won't give away the plot more
than that. Perhaps someone
on the list will remember the name of the film?

[ha-Safran]: Israeli Dissertations

2006-10-04 Thread Yelena Luckert
Dear all,

We have talked about the need for Israeli dissertations quite a bit
in the beginning of the summer, and it was very clear how important
this topic is to many of us. Well, it seems that now we are getting
somewhere. CRL is in the process of acquiring dissertations from
Israel in the areas of Jewish and Israel Studies. It is a two step
process for them. They have already made the arrangements for the
standing order for all new dissertations from 2005
onward. However there is also a proposal on the CRL's table to
acquire available dissertations in the above subject areas from
previous years (step 2). Those of us who are CRL member
institutions, please make sure the person in charge of voting for
your institution ranks this proposal high. This proposal will be
competing, I am sure, with other very worthy things, so we need as
many votes for this as possible. Thank you very much for all your help.

[ha-Safran]: Sukkot on the J Site and 65 holiday links

2006-10-04 Thread Jacob Richman
Hi Everyone!

Sukkot is the Jewish holiday that commemorates how protective
"Clouds of Glory" surrounded the Jewish people after leaving
Egypt during the forty years of wandering in the desert.
It also commemorates how the Jews lived in temporary dwellings
during that same time.
Sukkot begins Friday evening, October 6, 2006.

The J Site - Jewish Education and Entertainment

http://www.j.co.il

has several entertaining features to celebrate Sukkot:

Jewish Trivia Quiz: Sukkot

What is the Hebrew date of the first day of Sukkot ?
What is another name for the Sukkot holiday ?
What does Sukkot commemorate ?
What is the minimum area of a Sukkah as defined in the Talmud ?
What is the maximum height of a Sukkah ?
What does the Aramaic word "Ushpizin" mean ?
Who gets called to the Torah reading on Simchat Torah ?

The above questions are examples from the multiple choice
Flash quiz. There are two levels of questions, two timer settings.
Both kids and adults will find it enjoyable.

Additional Sukkot resources and games on the J site include:
Free Sukkot Clipart
The Multilingual Hangman Game (English / Hebrew)
The Multilingual Word Search Game (English / Hebrew / Russian)
My Hebrew Songbook (Hebrew Song Lyrics)
My Jewish Coloring Book (online / offline)

The J site has something for everyone, but if that is not
enough, I posted on my website 65 links about Sukkot,
from laws and customs to games and recipes.
Site languages include English, Hebrew, Russian, Spanish,
French, Portuguese, German and Italian.
All 65 links have been reviewed / checked this week.
The web address is:

http://www.jr.co.il/hotsites/j-hdaysu.htm

Please forward this message to relatives and friends,
so they may benefit from these holiday resources.

Enjoy!
Happy Sukkot!
Jacob

[ha-Safran]: Israeli Film at the Library of Congress

Present

CUTTING THE CORD
FILM BY Danny Syrkin
(In French, German, Yiddish, Hebrew, English subtitles)
52' minutes, Israel-Belgium*Germany.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2006
12:00 Noon

PICKFORD THEATER
Madison Building, Library of Congress

Myriam Fuks, a well-known Yiddish singer, is the child of Holocaust
survivors. Her mother lived in the past repeating the tales of her
horrors. Last year Myriam was amazed to discover that her mother knew
a very different Holocaust. She lived a good life as a Christian in
a small German village. The film follows Myriam as she tries to
understand her mother's real story, the meaning of the truth, and
ultimately reconciliation. It's a film about myths, their use, and
abuse. A victim twice - once in Nazi Germany, and again among her own
people - this is about the fight for life and the zest to live.

RE: [ha-Safran]: Thora book

2006-10-04 Thread Miller, Philip
Regarding this "curiosity," when I was in the Soviet Union in 1986 as a
guest of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Soviet Academy of
Sciences, I was told that a cache of Torah scrolls had been uncovered
near Berditchev, in the Ukraine.

What happened to them? The "authorities" distributed them to museums in
Armenia, Georgia, and the Soviet "Asian" Republics.

One can only wonder if this is one of those scrolls...

2006-10-04 Thread Marcus Breen
Dear Colleague,

I am writing on behalf of the Organising Committee, to inform you of
the call for papers for the:

THE THIRD INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON TECHNOLOGY, KNOWLEDGE AND SOCIETY
Cambridge University, UK, 9-12 January 2007
http://www.Technology-Conference.com

The conference will take a broad and cross-disciplinary approach to
technology in society. With a particular focus on digital information
and communications technologies, the conference will address: human
usability, technologies for citizenship and community participation,
and learning technologies. Participants will include researchers,
teachers and practitioners whose interests are either technical or
humanistic, or whose work crosses over between the technological,
applied and social sciences.

As well as an impressive line up of international main speakers, the
conference will also include numerous paper, workshop and colloquium
presentations. I would particularly like to invite you to respond to
the conference call for papers. Presenters may choose to submit
written papers for consideration before or after the conference in
the fully refereed International Journal of Technology, Knowledge and
Society. If you are unable to attend the conference in person,
virtual registrations are also available which allow you to submit a
paper for refereeing and possible publication in the journal, and
give you access to the online version of the journal.

The deadline for the next round in the call for papers (a title and
short abstract) is 31 October 2006. Proposals are reviewed within one
week of submission.

Full details of the conference, including an online call for papers
form, are to be found at the conference website -
http://www.Technology-Conference.com

We look forward to receiving your proposals and hope you will be able
to join us in Cambridge in January 2007.

Yours Sincerely,

Dr Marcus Breen

[ha-Safran]: New Book

2006-10-04 Thread Sarah A. Stein
Indiana University Press is pleased to announce the recent publication of:

Now in paperback

Making Jews Modern
The Yiddish and Ladino Press in the Russian and Ottoman Empires
Sarah Abrevaya Stein

“An engaging and thought-provoking analysis, . . . a pioneering foray
into a new field of study, ‘Jews and Empires in History.’” Slavic Review

On the eve of the 20th century, Jews in the Russian and Ottoman
empires were caught up in the major cultural and social
transformations that constituted modernity for Ashkenazi and Sephardi
Jewries. What did it mean to be Jewish and Russian, Jewish and
Ottoman, Jewish and modern? To answer these questions, Sarah Abrevaya
Stein explores the texts most widely consumed by Jewish readers:
popular newspapers in Yiddish and Ladino. This skillful comparative
study yields new perspectives on the role of print culture in
imagining national and transnational communities and the diverse ways
in which modernity was envisioned under the rule of empire.
