[ha-Safran]: FYI

2006-10-23 Thread Eli Wise
Dear Colleagues:

It isn’t very often that our profession gets a chance to express its
opinions. I had the privilege of being interviewed by the Jewish
Exponent for a feature of theirs. I want to share the article with
you all because it is important for us to express our professional
opinions as well as our angst’s to the public. In the computer age
people lose sight of the importance of libraries and the service we
provide to researchers. The article came as a result of a visit by
the managing editor of the paper to the college. I would humbly
suggest that we all try to get the word out about what we offer in
assistance to people from the casual researcher to the academic. Our
roles have not changed just the methodology of the way we assist.

Re: "One night with the king" - what to think

2006-10-23 Thread Andrea Rapp
It took a lot of liberties with the story as it is in the Bible, just
as the "Ten Commandments" epic did. (For example, the queen
candidates who spend a night with the king entertain him by telling
him stories, a la Scheherezade).
When I saw it, the audience seemed virtually all non-Jewish; at
the victorious final scene - victorious for the Jews - the audience
burst into applause. That was great. And two other people I know who
saw it, at different showings, said the same thing happened!

The only "Christian" touch that I saw - that most would perhaps not
detect - was a line where Esther says she loves the story of David
and Goliath because it was his "faith" not his deed that saved the
day. Something like that.

Re: "One night with the king" - what to think

2006-10-23 Thread Yael Resnick
It's big-budget mass entertainment. From what I have read from
advance press releases, it is not true to the Purim story, although
it is obviously "inspired" by it. They have Esther trying to "win
Achashveirosh's heart" as a main theme.

I would suggest watching the trailer at their website,
http://www.onenightwiththeking.com, to see if it seems like something
you feel comfortable with.

2006-10-23 Thread Aaron Kuperman
My sons (in a yeshiva high school, but who regularly watch movies)
commented that the PG rating (which means: approved for all ages, some
scenes might be problematic or scary for very little children) suggests a
Christian bias, since if they based the movie on traditional Jewish
sources it would be rated at least R.--Aaron Kuperman

Re: [ha-Safran]: Rembrandt and the Jewish people

2006-10-23 Thread Joel Bresler
Hi, from Prof. Michael Zell at BU in response to Ms. Gisolfi's
forwarded message:

>As far as I know, there is no DVD or video focusing on Rembrandt and

>myth is the outdated 1936 movie with Charles Laughton as the artist,
>so I wouldn't recommend it). Landsberger's book is also very old and
>very much a postwar product. A recent book by Steven Nadler,
>entitled Rembrandt's Jews, is an accessibly-written overview. My

>and is pretty heavy "Art History." It's also a revisionist take that

"One night with the king" - what to think

2006-10-23 Thread Amy Wissoker Graham
This is a tad off-topic, since it's just been released in theaters,
but I was wondering what people have heard about this movie. It's
supposed to be a retelling of the Purim story. The only thing I've
been able to find out is that the company behind it is Gener8Xion (a
company that produces Christian productions) and it's gotten a plug
from the American Bible Society. My first inclination is to skip it,
but since it is unusual to see such stories brought to the big
screen, I can't help wondering.

Thanks,
Amy
