[ha-Safran]: KUDOS FOR AN AUTHOR/SPEAKER

2006-12-11 Thread Shfirsch
Some of you have asked on Hasafran for recommendations of authors
who are good speakers. I am suggesting Carla Danziger who spoke
recently at a Jewish Book Month session in Sarasota, FL. She is the
author of Hidden Falls, a fascinating mystery novel with Jewish
content. All there admired and appreciated her speaking
ability. She sold all her many books on display.

The premise of Hidden Falls is as follows. After the painful
breakup of her 20-year marriage, an American woman tours Norway's
fjords with her cousin, a popular Norwegian journalist. The trip
turns into a nightmare when the journalist is found deadl at the
bottom of Hidden Falls. In the tradition of Agatha Christie, the
protagonist begins a personal search for the truth. Her cousin's
private ghosts from the Nazi occupation of Norway and her post-war
years in England lead the American tourist down a rocky trail of
danger, romance, and soul-searching questions about justice.

The author is located in the Washington, DC area but is willing
to travel not just for Book Month. You can contact her at

[ha-Safran]: For The Sake Of Jerusalem

2006-12-11 Thread Chaim Mazo
Announcing the publication of For The Sake Of Jerusalem

By Aharon Bier (z'l) and Bracha Slae, Editor

Commemorating 40 Years of Reunification 1967-2007

You will want to have For The Sake Of Jerusalem as part of your
library because it is the most up-to-date book in English that
documents Jewish life in Jerusalem's Old City for the past 100 plus
years. For The Sake Of Jerusalem is the historical record about
the Yeshivot, Synagogues, and Jewish Leaders of this
period. Historic photographs throughout the book, many taken by
Aharon Bier, help to document how Jewish life developed in the Holy
City during the last century. Many of these pictures have never been
published prior to appearing in For The Sake Of Jerusalem!

For The Sake Of Jerusalem will provide you with a very clear
picture of how the Jewish community in the Old City lived - and
survived - on a daily basis while under the governance of the
Ottomans and the British, then to war with the Jordanians in 1948 -
and finally to Israeli control in 1967.

Includes Index and Glossary

Rabbi Berel Wein wrote: It is history, cartography, photography, and
inspiration all rolled into one attractive, readable and knowledgeable book.

About The Author and The Editor

Aharon Bier - guide, author, and photographer - was personally
involved in the rebuilding of the Old City of Jerusalem from 1967
until his untimely death in 1987. He was one of the first to
photograph and write about Jewish sites throughout the Holy City. In
the 20 years that followed reunification, Aharon Bier actively worked
to make the Old City a vibrant and active community. Unfortunately,
he did not live to see many of his projects completed.

Bracha Slae has edited, and added to the research of Aharon Bier, to
provide an up-to-date picture of Jewish life in the Old City. A
resident of the Old City for almost three decades, Bracha Slae’s
intimate knowledge of the people and places within the walls, and her
vast experience as a guide, gives her the background to prepare this book.

City. – Ships from Israel

To whom it may concern:

Please post the following announcement on your listserv or website. Thank you.

Each year, the Friends of the Princeton University Library offer
short-term Library Research Grants to promote scholarly use of the
research collections. The Program in Hellenic Studies also supports a
limited number of Library Research Grants in Hellenic studies, and
the Cotsen Children’s Library supports research in its collection on
aspects of children’s books. The Maxwell Fund supports research on
materials dealing with Portuguese-speaking cultures.

These Library Research Grants, which have a value of up to $2,500
each, are meant to help defray expenses incurred in traveling to and
residing in Princeton during the tenure of the grant. The length of
the grant will depend on the applicant’s research proposal, but is
ordinarily one month. Library Research Grants awarded in this
academic year are tenable from May 2007 to April 2008, and the
deadline for applications is 15 January 2007.

Applicants are asked to submit a completed application form
(http://www.princeton.edu/rbsc/fellowships/application.pdfhttp://www.princeton.edu/rbsc/fellowships/application.pdf),

budget form
(http://www.princeton.edu/rbsc/fellowships/budget_rev08152006a.pdfhttp://www.princeton.edu/rbsc/fellowships/budget_rev08152006a.pdf)

a résumé, and a research proposal not exceeding three pages in
length. Applicants must also arrange for two confidential letters of
recommendation to be sent directly to the Library Research Grants
Committee at the address given below.

The proposal should address specifically the relevance to the
proposed research of unique resources found in the Princeton
University Library collections. Prospective grantees are urged to
consult the Library’s home page at
http://libweb.princeton.edu/http://libweb.princeton.edu for
detailed descriptions of the collections, especially those in the
Rare Books and Special Collections Department, and for the names of
curators and reference staff. Applicants should have specific
Princeton resources in mind—not simply a desire to make use of a
major research library—as they prepare their proposals.

A committee consisting of members of the faculty, the library staff,
and the Friends will award the grants on the basis of the relevance
of the proposal to unique holdings of the library, the merits and
significance of the project, and the applicant’s scholarly
qualifications. Awards will be made before 1 April 2007.

Application materials and letters of recommendation are to be mailed
to Library Research Grant Committee, Princeton University Library,
One Washington Road, Princeton, NJ 08544. Materials mailed to the
committee must be postmarked no later than 15 January 2007. Facsimile
transmissions may be sent to (609) 258-2324. Electronic
communications to the committee may be sent to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Materials submitted by e-mail or facsimile
must be received no later than 15 January 2007.

[ha-Safran]: Irans Ballistic Missiles - a free download

2006-12-11 Thread David Elazar
Shalom Safranim:

A free download on an important subject

Global Reach of Iran’s Ballistic Missiles by Uzi Rubin
http://www.tau.ac.il/jcss/publications.html#memoranda
48 pgs Nov 2006

The Institute for National Security Studies (INSS), incorporating the Jaffee
Center for Strategic Studies, was founded in 2006.

While the international community is focused on Iran’s potential
nuclearization, it ought likewise to take stock of the developments in
Iran's missile technology. Iran’s missiles are an indispensable complement
to its nuclear ambitions and merit as much scrutiny as its nuclear program.
This study describes and interprets the Iranian missile program within the
context of Iran’s threat perception, armament policies, and overall
ambitions. Charting the origins of Iran's missile program and its
development, the study presents a clear picture of where Iran's missile
capability stands today and where it is likely headed. Iran’s space program
is a symbiotic adjunct to the missile program, and is reviewed here as well.

Among the main conclusions of this study:

• Iran’s missile and space programs are progressing with singular urgency:
no other country in the world, including established industrialized powers,
comes close to Iran in the number and variety of ballistic missiles in
development or already deployed.

• The Iranians are covering almost all technological bases: ordinary liquid
propulsion, storable liquid propulsion, and solid propulsion. Along with
ballistic missiles and space launch vehicles, Iran seems poised to add a
cruise missile component to its strategic forces.

• Iran's development of a space launch vehicle may well be a harbinger of an
ICBM.

• The range of Iran's missiles has grown steadily decade by decade, from a
purely local range to an extended range that is likely to dominate the
entire European continent by the end of the decade.

[ha-Safran]: Online Manuscript of the Tosefta

2006-12-11 Thread elhanan
The Jewish National and University Library, David and Fela Shapell
Family Digitization Project and the Hebrew University Department of
Talmud are pleased to announce the expansion of the Online Treasury of
Talmudic Manuscripts to include a first manuscript of the Tosefta: the
so-called 'Erfurt' manuscript.

This manuscript, which survived the Pogrom of the Jewish community of
Erfurt in 1349, is held by the Staatsbibliothek, Berlin and reproduced
with their permission. It is one of the two most important major
existing manuscripts of the Tosefta and contains four sedarim:
Zera'im, Moed, Nashim and Nezikin.

The Tosefta manuscript is indexed by tractate, chapter and halacha.

The Online Treasury of Talmudic Manuscripts project continues also to
grow with additional manuscripts of the Mishna and Talmud Bavli. We
hope to also add manuscripts of the Talmud Yerushalmi and Midrashim in
the coming year.

The Online Treasury of Talmud Manuscripts site is found at:
