Re: [ha-Safran]: Jimmy Carter's book
Aside from the comments and citations given, there were also the statements of American negotiator Dennis Ross. Ross takes Carter to task on a number of issues. For example, Carter apparently wrote that Ehud Barak rejected Clinton's peace plan. Ross said that not only did Barak accept the Clinton plan, but the Israeli cabinet actually voted and approved it. This is a matter of record. As Ross said in a TV interview, Carter is entitled to his own opinion, but not to his own facts, and he got the facts wrong, and should retract them. It would certainly be nice if President Clinton would also speak up (or has he?) to correct Carter's errors. [ha-Safran]: Feedback on Encyclopedia Judaica purchases
Thank you those who replied to me regarding your organizations plans to purchase the new EJ in hard copy or e-book form. Here are the replies I received: 1. We are ordering both version since the print copy is so reasonable when you buy together. It sometimes easier to find things in print, especially for the older patrons. For the base cost, the e-version will go on every computer in the building and will be available remotely from any computer outside the building. If congregants want to use it from their home, they will have a password. [Temple Beth El, Bloomfield Hills, MI] 2. We are planning on ordering both the print and e-book version. The pricing for both is much more reasonable than just for one, and I think that our patrons would use it. [Maurer Library, Bureau of Jewish Education, Indianapolis, IN] 3. For our high school library, I only ordered the print version. I have the old CD of EJ which I purchased many years ago. The new pricing is prohibitively expensive. [HAFTR High School, Cedarhurst, NY] 4. We applied for a grant that enabled us to order both. [Dept of Jewish Education of Greater New Haven] I hope these are helpful. [ha-Safran]: Jimmy Carter's Book
Jimmy Carters book and it relevance goes beyond the normal collection development criteria. Since it has been argued that many facts are incorrect and his subsequent interviews give us a loud and clear message where he stands why purchase it. If someone wants to read the book I am sure that there are public libraries that provide it in their collections. If your library has a policy to collect all types of overt and alluded to Antisemitica then I suppose the book should be purchased. Otherwise a Judaica library should provide different points of view but Carters book has a purpose and an agenda. Would a library buy a book on Jewish history by David Duke, the president of Iran or the likes? Perhaps not, but just because someone was President of United States does not automatically require purchase. I would advise to spend your money on materials that reflect the needs of your public which is the primary responsibility and materials that present viewpoints without the hate, venom, and agenda. Has anyone used programs, to teach Hebrew, such as Rosetta Stone; language learning success? This comes in an online version as well as on a CD. Basically, the answer is No. Here are excerpts of the many responses: 1. Keep in mind that as a book written by a former president of the United States, it will be available in every public library and your patrons will have no trouble getting it. As a librarian in a Jewish library, given its inaccuracies and anti-Israel bias, I wouldn't waste my money on it and increase Carter's profits. 2. If a non-fiction book is known to be filled with factual errors (as this one is), then it is a disservice for a librarian on whom library users are relying, to purchase it and add to the collection as a non-fiction book. 3. I would not use a limited budget on this book which contains many inacuracies and is basically anti-Israel. Should one decide to include the book his/her collection, I recommend that your patrons be made aware of the following responses and reviews: Misinformation In Jimmy Carters New Book http://www.standwithus.com/pdfs/flyers/Carter_Responses.pdfhttp://www.standwithus.com/pdfs/flyers/Carter_Responses.pdf 1) The World According to Jimmy Carter,by Alan Dershowitz 2) Jimmy Carter Calumny: A review of Palestine Peace Not Apartheid Review by Mitchell Bard 3)Letter of Resignation of Dr. Kenneth Stein from the Carter Center 4) Jimmy Carter Disingenuous Diplomacy, by Rick Richman In any case, I would encourage all my patrons to read the above, with or without the book, especially the letter of Dr. Stein. 4. Everything I have read describes it as inaccurate pro-Palestinian propaganda. While I do try to present even-handed multi-sided materials in our collection, I feel responsible for presenting on our shelves ACCURATE information about Israel. 5. It is anti-Israel. If congregants want to read it let them take it out at the Public Library. 6. I would suggest that congregants who want to read Jimmy Carter's scurrilous book borrow it from a public library. 7. I feel VERY strongly that NOBODY should purchase that book! It is an anti-Israeli polemic -- and it has SO MANY factual errors that it's not worth anything. Let's not contribute one penny to someone who is out to hurt Jews! 8. Dennis Ross has also effectively discredited Carter's book. For example, Carter said that Ehud Barak did NOT accept Clinton's plan. Ross said that not only did Barak accept it, but the Israeli cabinet voted to accept, and this is a matter of record. As Ross put it, Carter is entitled to his own opinion, but not to his own facts. I will not purchase the book, since I try to purchase materials that are accurate and unbiased. Two people were not opposed to buying the book: 1. I would encourage you to consider the fact that Jimmy Carter is a former president of the US. He has worked tirelessly on behalf of the oppressed for decades. As President, he brokered peace between Israel and Egypt. As an elder statesman, I believe he should be heard and taken seriously. 2. I think it's important to have resources that express all points of view.
