Re: [ha-Safran]: Question for Day School Librarians

2007-01-04 Thread Susan Dubin
We do not charge fines either. We do charge a flat fee for lost
books---$25. The lost book fine is due by June. If not paid, it is
added onto the students school fees for the following year!

RE: [ha-Safran]: CLCD subscriptions

2007-01-04 Thread bsutton
To all AJL members who are currently subscribed to CLCD -

When you receive an email stating that your subscription is about to expire,
respond to the email with a statement that you are still a current member of
AJL and could they please renew your subscription.

The only conditions under which you would no longer qualify would be a lapse
in your dues, so that you are not really a current member of AJL, or an
increase in your budget such that you no longer qualify as a small library.

If you have any trouble renewing your subscription, please let me know.

RE: [ha-Safran]: al- in a day's work

2007-01-04 Thread Bernstein, Steven (Library)
I have received a bunch of responses to my query about the Al in Al
Qaeda stating that a name that begins with an article is treated
differently in different circumstances. If the name is being used in
its native context, then the article is ignored when indexing. If the
name is being used in a foreign context such as English, the article
very well may become part of the name as a whole in the common usage.
In further discussion about this, my coworker came up with another
example of this phenomenon in records about the weather system El
Nino, where the El has become part of the name. Incidentally, there
is an LCRI that deals with this, I just wasn't looking hard enough:

21.30J. Titles
Retain initial articles and record an appropriate value in the
non-filing indicator (indicator position 2). Use value 0 when an
article is to be filed on as follows:
a) the title begins with an article that appears as part of a
personal, geographic, or corporate name and is retained in such a name
according to LCRI 22.4, LCRI 23.2, or AACR2 rule 24.5A;
b) the title begins with an article in a situation in which meaning
and cataloger's judgment require its retention, e.g., such titles as

Re: [ha-Safran]: 1972 Encyclopaedia Judaica: to keep or to withdraw?

2007-01-04 Thread D.J. Birnbaum
Henry Hollander is right about errors. For instance, they couldn't even get
the index
comprehensive - in these days of computers!

They have often, quite legitimately, retained an article from the 1972
edition , but had someone revise it, and at the bottom attributed it to
both the original author, as well as the
reviser, thus: [A.Cohen/B.Levy (2nd ed)]. It's therefore unclear whose
views are being expressed at any particular point. This is a careless thing
to do. I know of a case where the reviser's views were inserted within the
text written by the 1972 author's views, yet which were diametrically
opposed to those of the 1972 author! Who could tell, unless he/she knew the
subject?

Production is not as handsome as the 1972 edition. Also, no pictures (except
centerfold).

Good reasons to retain the old edition.

[ha-Safran]: Encyclopaedia Judaica 1st edition for cost of shipping

2007-01-04 Thread Val Morehouse
Hello everyone,

It seems that most folks have a lot more space on their library
shelves than we do here. I cannot keep the EJ first edition due to
lack of space. If your library would like to have it for the cost of
shipping (please no book dealers) contact me off the list. My Rabbi
would prefer to help out a struggling synagogue library that really
needs itÂ…to get going on creating a library collection for their
congregation. Email me with a paragraph about how it would help, so
I can show it to the Rabbi.

Thanks,

Val
