Re: [ha-Safran]: Uncle Tom's Cabin in Hebrew

2007-02-08 Thread Batya Kaplan
Dear Joel,
A search in the Union List of the Israeli Library Network (ULI)
brought up at least 21 distinct records.
You may access ULI at http://libnet1.ac.il/~libnet/uli and search
Hebrew titles in Hebrew letters. A search in ULI will display all the
holdings of the academic libraries in Israel. I tried to choose only
one of each edition or reprint. These are in Citation format. I
suggest you access the catalog and view full bibliographic records.

RE: [ha-Safran]: Uncle Tom's Cabin in Hebrew

2007-02-08 Thread Miller, Philip
Gates may have included printings.

For example, HUC, NY has one published in Warsaw by Zuckerman in 1897
that is hotsaah 2 u-metukenet.

That means there was an earlier printing as well, and that the 1902
might have been a reprint of the 1897.

This would indicate that there was both the interest and a readership of
such a size as to support this many editions.

Shalom safranim/ot!

Did you know that this year is the 50th birthday of the Cat in the Hat?

Do a mitzvah – Send the Cat a birthday card!
Random House has pledged to donate one Random House children's book
to First Book for every purchase of a Dr. Seuss title made between
January 1 and May 1. In addition, the publisher has created both
mail-in and online birthday postcards, available online
at www.catinthehat.com. For every birthday card received, Random
House will also donate one book to First Book, a nonprofit
organization founded to give children from low-income families the
opportunity to read and own their first books.

Spread the word!

[ha-Safran]: Professional degree program in Judaica librarianship

2007-02-08 Thread Yelena Luckert
Dear all,

I am hoping that I could get some feedback on this query.
The University of Maryland has recently established a new rubric of a
professional degree programs, which could be either MA or a
Certificate in areas that commercially can sustain such programs.
For more information please see
http://www.professionalstudies.umd.edu/graduateprograms/.

We in the Jewish Studies program at UM are interested in creating a
professional certificate in Judaica Librarianship, knowing how hard
it is to find Judaica librarians of all kinds of sorts.
Last summer we discussed a certificate that looked like the following.
  1. Judaica Technical Services (6 credits)
  2. Introduction to Judaica Bibliography (3 credits)
  3. Internship or special project (for job-holders) (3 credits).

Here are our questions:
= is there an interest in the professional certificate in Judaica
Librarianship as we are defining it?
= Should MLS be required as a prerequisite for such a program? The
question here is who this program is more likely to serve: those of
us who ended up at academic institutions or those of us who went to
temple libraries, for example.
= Should reading knowledge of Hebrew or Yiddish be required before admission?
= Would it make more sense to have this program in classroom or
online? Even if we do it as a residence program, we are thinking
that the first two courses could be done within 3 or 4 weeks of all
day classes, and Internship could be flexible in terms of
locations. So we think one will be able to finish this certificate
in a relatively short time. The professional degree programs are
very flexible in terms of how they allow courses to run.

I should also mention that at the University of Maryland we do have a
Library School and one can earn an MLS degree with a non-degree
graduate certificate in Jewish Studies. This means that a person
will have to complete a usual MLS degree but can take a concentration
in Jewish Studies (history, literature, philosophy, ect.) on a
side. For more information on this please see
http://www.clis.umd.edu/programs/non-degree.shtml. However our
library school at this time is not interested in creating a specific
degree in Judaica librarianship.

Many thanks for your help. If you reply to this message (and I hope
you do), could you please identify what kind of organization you are
working now. This might help us in a number of ways.

For the benefit of those who don't subscrihe to LJ,
I'm presenting a brief excerpt (from the Graphic
Novels column by Steve Raiteri and Martha Cornog) :

Religion and comics: strange prayerfellows? No --
throughout history, every art form has retold the
compelling stories of faith. Two Jewish youngsters
created Superman, who has been compared to that
mythical Jewish avenger, the Golem. Indeed, the
Bible's superpatriarchs and supermatriarchs called
upon special powers to protect their people.

One such supermatriarch is beautifully realized in
Megillat Esther (see review, p. ##). Likewise in King
David (Vertigo), the striking color art carries the
story with little text. In a more impressionistic take
on the Torah, Testament: Akedah and Testament: West of
Eden (Vertigo) cross cut Biblical story lines with
modern-day plots in an edgy, cosmic drama mixing sin,
skin, and grace. A Western frontier Solomon stars in
the lighthearted Adventures of Rabbi Harvey (LJ
8/15/06), while The Rabbi's Cat (LJ 11/15/05) tells a
mature, bittersweet family comedy of 1930s Algeria,
with the impertinent cat as theological commentator.
Two useful histories include Jews in America: A
Cartoon History (Jewish Publication Society), more
illustrated vignettes than narrative, and The Story of
the Jews: A 4,000 Year Adventure (Jewish Lights),
covering Genesis to post 9/11 with irreverent quips
and irony. Unfortunately, neither has a bibliography.

* Waldman, J.T. Megillat Esther. Jewish Publication
Soc. 2005. 172p. bibliog. ISBN 0-8276-0788-1. pap.
$18.00. REL

The Old Testament's Book of Esther tells a tale of
intrigue, genocide, and revenge. Looking to replace
Queen Vashti because she haughtily refuses to come to
his party, the King of Persia falls for the lovely
foster daughter of Mordecai. But not knowing that his
new Queen Esther -- and Mordecai -- are Jewish, the
king unwittingly enters into a plot of his egomaniacal
prime minister Haman, to kill all the Jews in Persia
simply because Mordecai will not bow to Haman on the
street. Can Esther foil Haman's plot without piquing
her husband's temper and courting death herself?
Indeed she does, and Haman is hanged on the gallows he
built for Mordecai. It's a satisfying tale for
everyone, especially Jews -- indeed, the Megillat
(scroll of) Esther is the basis for the Jewish feast
of Purim. The sumptuous, almost psychedelic black and
white art with Hebrew text worked into the panel
design is a feast for the eyes as appetizing as the
feast of Purim itself.

Plentiful sidebars and back matter, including sources
and bibliography, provide plot embellishments and
background. For teens up. Highly recommended for all
libraries.

[ha-Safran]: Book cart rental

2007-02-08 Thread Amy Kaplan
Hello all,
My library (about 7000 vols.) will be relocating to a new building
(on the same property as our current facility). We will have to close
in late Spring with re-opening in early '08.

I've been through this routine before, with books packed in
cartons….I'm trying to find other ways to accommodate our needs and
keep the library functioning during the transition.

I seem to remember reading a post about renting library carts to use
for book storage during a transition time like this. If you know of
a supplier for such cart rentals, please advise…

Also, any other ideas about creative ways to deal with the move
would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

[ha-Safran]: Hourly rate for synagogue librarian

2007-02-08 Thread Liza Stabler
1. Pay for a consultant at two local synagogue libraries is $40/hr.
This librarian does not charge for travel time and for a lot of
the work done at home.
2. A librarian just out of library school should make at least18/hr
($35,000 a year for
40 hours for 52 weeks). An experienced librarian should be
paid at least $25/hr. I'm assuming you mean a professional librarian
with a masters degree in library/information science/service?
Unfortunately, substandard wages are not uncommon.

[ha-Safran]: February Newsletter from Jerusalem Books

2007-02-08 Thread Jerusalem Books
Dear Friends,

Since the recent resignation of the IDF chief, the Ramatkal, Gen. Dan
Halutz, it is timely to mention that Israeli fiction writer Ram Oren
has published a new book, entitled, “Ramatkal,’ the abbreviation for
Chief of the General Staff of the Army. The book which reflects many
trends and issues in modern Israeli life, touches upon power,
ambition, politics, idealism and aging along with the military and
political challenges faced by Israel in a complicated and dangerous
middle east. Cat. # 62097 $24.00

(Ram Oren recently also released another book, ‘Yamin Adumin.’ Cat#
61025 - a suspense novel based on a true story of love and war. )

In the book world, as in the film world, topics often come in two’s
or even three’s. ‘Be-sodo shel Ariel ?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns
= urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags /Sharon,’ is a
biography of the former PM and general, written by his lifelong
friend, confidant and loyalist. Uri Dan, a talented author and
leading journalist wrote this chronicle of Sharon which is equally a
history of Israel including some of the recent astounding steps such
as the withdrawal from the Gaza strip. Publ. Miskal / Yediot, isbn
965-482-394-2, Cat. 62315 $ 27.00

It is important to note that the book was also published, more or
less simultaneously in English outside of Israel. Also another book,
‘Sharon / Tahanot Hayav (Stations of his life),’ has been published
by Shibolim, isbn 965-7384-14-1. It is a large format ‘coffee table’
type book with many photos. Included are many photos from the many
battles in which he fought and at least one lovely photo of Sharon
holding a pomello. Cat. # 61558 $ 37.00

Dan Shilon another celebrated Israeli journalist has published a
novel entitled, Teguva Ro’emet, ‘Stormy Reaction.’ This is another in
the realm of timely fiction that reflects and perhaps expresses
Israeli political, social, international, military realities. The
book, deals with military action in Lebanon and the role and
influence of the ‘media, among other things.’ Published by Miskal –
Yediot, Hemed, isbn. 965-482-357-8, Cat. #61233 $26.00

In this past Friday issue of Ha’aretz they mentioned a journal of
Hebrew Literature in English, MHL, No. 3, published by Toby Press.
Now, this is published in the US, so I/we, at Jerusalem Books Ltd.
don’t ‘need’ to mention it. However, I can’t help but be positive and
supportive of a journal of literature which increases the awareness
of Israeli Hebrew authors. Hopefully, this will increase the need and
desire to acquire these books in their original Hebrew.

Recently, the world of Hebrew Literature saw the passing of Prof.
Gershon Shaked, the known author and literary critic. He taught at
Tel Aviv University and Jerusalem Books distributed more than a dozen
books he published over the years.

In the area of Rabbinics / Sifrei Kodesh I hope to post a separate
newsletter shortly. Needless to say, if you are looking for the new
Talmud Yerushalmi, single volume edition or anything else by Ketuvim,
or new things from Mossad Harav Kook, please let us know.

All of us at Jerusalem Books wish you a Happy Purim.

Sincerely,

Jeff

[ha-Safran]: Learning Yiddish in easy stages

2007-02-08 Thread Warshenbrot, Amalia
Shalom from the warm South.
I am looking for several copies of the book Learning Yiddish in easy
stages by Marvin Zuckerman, Rangloss Press 1987. Amazon offers it
for $75. When I Goggled I found it for $49.95. The Yiddish Book
Center do not have it for sale.

Any suggestion where I can find it for less than the above prices?

[ha-Safran]: Sephardic Music on Record, NYC Lecture, February 16

2007-02-08 Thread Joel Bresler
Dear Friends:

I hope you or others you know will be able to join us in Manhattan
next week for what should be an enjoyable talk.

Warmly,

Joel Bresler

(Apologies for cross posting!)

Edwin Seroussi and Joel Bresler
Sephardic Music on Record: A Century of Commercial Ladino Recordings
Center for Jewish History
15 W. 16th St. New York City
Friday, February 16, 2007
10:30 AM to Noon

Greetings!
With the generous support of the American Jewish Historical Society,
the American Society for Jewish Music welcomes you to the Jewish
Music Forum lecture series. This month, we will experience the
unveiling of a significant new development in Sephardic music
research for the international community:

Sephardic Music on Record: A Century of Commercial Ladino Recordings

Presented by:

Edwin Seroussi, professor, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and Joel
Bresler, principal researcher and discographer.
Respondent: Virginia Danielson, Harvard University.
Co-sponsor: American Sephardi Federation.

In brief:
Edwin Seroussi and Joel Bresler reveal a new, innovative, web-based
encyclopedic resource--a Sephardic Music Catalogue that will list all
known commercial recordings containing Ladino songs. The project
launch coincides with the 100th anniversary of commercial Sephardic
recording. The discussion will include a survey of commercial
recordings of Sephardic music, with a particular emphasis on the
first half of the 20th century. It will also cover recording
technology's impact on the perception, reception and canonization of
Ladino songs in recent decades, illustrated with rare early recordings.

Distinguished panel:
Dr. Edwin Seroussi is the Emanuel Alexandre Professor of Musicology,
Director of the Jewish Music Research Centre and chair of the
Department of Musicology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Joel
Bresler is a Harvard MBA and has been collecting and researching
Sephardic music on commercial recordings for 30 years. Dr. Virginia
Danielson is the Richard F. French Librarian of the Loeb Music
Library at Harvard University, and a noted expert on Middle Eastern music.

About the Jewish Music Forum:
The Forum is a colloquium in which invited lecturers present original
research in a flexible format that is followed by response and open
discussion. With the support of the American Jewish Historical
Society, the Jewish Music Forum, a project of the American Society
for Jewish Music, launched its new series at the Center for Jewish
History in the spring of 2005. The Jewish Music Forum is devoted to
the study of Jewish music in all of its historical and contemporary diversity.

This event is free and open to the public.

Please join us Friday, Feb. 16th--with all best wishes,

G. Genova

Thanks to all of you who have responded. It has been an education for me!!

There are other issues with Professor Gates's version, see
http://www.newyorker.com/printables/critics/061106crbo_books1 but
this minor point does not seem to be one of them.

We are indeed the people of the book.

[ha-Safran]: Professional Degree in Judaica Librarianship

2007-02-08 Thread Eli Wise
I don’t understand why there is a need for a certificate in Judaica
Librarianship. What we do is a specialty within the library
profession. If we think that a special credential will increase
interest and provide for the continuing pool of librarians in Judaica
we are going in the wrong direction. When people go to a professional
school they receive a global education in that field with course work
in specific specialties. When a person goes to either law school or
medical school they don’t train to be a corporate attorney or surgeon
respectively. Certificate programs do not always guarantee that those
who receive one will enter the profession. Sometimes people will take
this certificate for their own personal edification. It is true that
the program will benefit those already working in a library, but that
is the point, they are already there. I don’t think that the
certificate program provides an effective recruitment tool. I spoke
to the Dean of the Library School at Drexel University with a
possible proposal for a reference course in Judaica with a formal
similar to other areas. He asked me what kinds of numbers of
interested parties are out there. Obviously it would be difficult to
ascertain that number. He said that without even a ballpark figure
his school was not interested in starting even a reference course. I
do feel that creating such a course is more to the point if it can be
done that creating a certificate program. Perhaps a graduate with
such course work might be motivated to work in a Judaica library.
Even if this interest is there the remuneration is a major stumbling block.

Our specialty has several overall difficulties in recruiting new
people. The main problem is salary. Many Judaica libraries pay very
poorly and have little opportunity for advancement. I have met people
who would jump to the opportunity to be in a Judaic environment. The
answer as to why they don’t is because of the poor salaries.
I don’t believe anything short of raising professional remuneration
standards will make a significant impact on recruiting people to our
specialty. Gratz College had a certificate program at one time. I
taught in that program. The majority of the class was not librarians.
We need to elevate our salary structures, opportunity for advancement
and a general uplifting of our own professional self-esteem within
the general library community. I believe that these elements will
have a more effective influence on our goal than instituting a
certificate program. Such programs do not always bring the desired results.

[ha-Safran]: Serials tracking

2007-02-08 Thread Chaya Wiesman
Dear Safranim,

We would like to know how those of you who do not have a serials
module in your library automation software are keeping track of your
serials (journals and magazines). We are only interested in a
computer program, not a manual method. If anyone has a good computer
program that helps them keep track of their journals and magazines,
we would appreciate hearing about it. Pricing/purchasing information
would also be helpful. We would like to avoid reinventing the wheel.

Thank you in advance for your help.
