[ha-Safran]: Question about signing out books
I sent in a question about what to do when the librarian is not present and the students want to sign out books in an automated library. Many people requested that I post the responses. Some are below. -- We have instituted a self check-out system for those times when the library is not staffed. We have the patron sign a book card, found in the back pocket of the book, stamp the card with the due date (on the stamp) place the card in a lucite holder. Then, we enter the books in the computer when we come in. This system has worked well for us. -- I created a form asking for Patron name, Library Card #, Book Title and barcode. Students and teachers are on the honor system to sign out materials when I am not there. I enter the information on the sheet when I return. -- We are automated, but as I can't be here 7 days a week, we have unattended checkout forms which we desgned for library patrons to fill out and leave us, then we input their inofrmation when we are here. The forms are a half sheet size, with the name, address and phone number at the top, then a line for the patron's name and one for their phone number on the right hand side. Under that it says Titles, with lines underneath for them to write the titles and bar codes of what they checked out. On the right had side is an example of a title wnd bar code label from a book, showing them how to write the last 5 digits of the Temple barcode from the back cover of the book. - --I am a part-time librarian in a synagogue library, and while I am here for most of the religious school classes, I am still only here 22 hours a week. I do not want to discourage people from taking out books when the room is being used for something else, so when I automated the library, I retained the book cards. Now, if someone takes out a book when I am not here, they sign their name to the card and leave it on my desk. I have been here five years and it seems to work well. - --This is a very typical problem in schools where we do not have full-time librarians. In my past life, I ran both elementary and secondary school libraries, though not at the same time. I have successfully used parent/grandparent volunteers in the elementary schools. I always had to schedule at least 2 for the morning and 2 for the afternoon to insure that someone was always there. But I suggest checking with your school administration first as some schools do not want parents in the school. Do you trust some of your teachers to work the system, if you trained them? If not, would you trust them to write out manually which book each student borrowed (along with the barcode) and then enter the titles in the system the next time you are in? There were some teachers I allowed to do this, and it actually worked quite well as they then understood how the library worked. This would only work for scheduled library visits and not for drop-ins. I also had grade 5 and 6 student volunteers, but they cannot be left alone in the library. In the high school, I formed a Library Committee and the students helped out before school, after school and at recess and lunch hours. To encourage students to join, I designed a Volunteer Award that was handed out each Spring during the school's annual award evening. I would also procure free movie tickets from one of my local bookstores and pull names out of a hat for my volunteers to choose someone to attend. Bookstores often get free tickets for movies that are based on books. You can also ask your suppliers for advanced editions of books that you can then give to your volunteers. (they get these free books regularly, and you'd be surprised at the wonderful books they have) Of course, the students also had first chance to see and borrow the new books as they arrived, and were the first to get to read the newspapers and magazines; another perk. - -Our school is also doing the automated thing for the first time. At the moment, when I'm not here, I ask a teacher or parent to be in the library at the end of the school day to check out books for anyone who wants to check out. In the future, however, I think I can configure the software on an additional computer so that

[ha-Safran]: Outstanding Librarian Prize
Dear Friends, I am pleased to share with you this information from Israel which confers an honor on one of us librarians. Shalom, Bracha Weisbarh The Outstanding Librarian Prize Awarded to the Ra'anana's Director of the Library Services. By Bracha Weisbarth, special correspondent. On Wednesday, February 21, at a ceremony attended by many dignitaries, authors and librarians at the 23rd Jerusalem International Book Fair, (February 18 -23, 2007), the Rachel Cohen Prize for the Outstanding Librarian of the year 2007, was awarded to Miriam (Muki) Prince, Director of Library Services of the city of Ra'anana. This prestigious prize honors the memory of Rachel Cohen the legendary librarian who was active for many years in promoting reading among the residents of Jerusalem. Muki Prince is the grand daughter and daughter of the original members of The Ahuza A - New York group who founded Ra'anana in 1912. From them she absorbed her deep love and commitment to the city. She told me, with pride, that her father planted some of the shady Ficus trees along Ahuza Street trees that are now over sixty years old. Prince served for the past 30 years as the Director of the main branch of the municipal library. The library is housed in the Yad L'Banim building, on Ahuza Street, the main street of the Ra'anana. In recognition of the excellent work she is doing, she was recommended for the prize by officials of the Ra'anana municipality. In the official announcement of the Ministry of Science, Culture and Sport awarding the prize to Prince, she is cited as a role model to other librarians for her deep commitment to encourage book reading among young and old alike. The citation enumerates some of her activities for which they found her deserving of this honor. She initiated many imaginative programs at the library for young readers, including guidance programs for parents on how to encourage their children to read books. She is very attentive to the needs of the members of the community and established programs to encourage reading among the socially deprived population by making books available free of paying the library membership fee. She attends to the needs of the many new Olim in the city by offering books in foreign languages. She makes a great effort in offering classic literary works as well as current best sellers. She introduces Israel's best known authors to the readers at highly attended meetings. Library programs for adults offer lectures on literature; a literary club and programs in Yiddish. A course on the empowerment of women is part of the fare offered by the library. She is also active in encouraging local writers. On a national level she brings the message of book reading to new settlements in the developing townships. During the Lebanon 2 war she brought her message to the resident of the Galilee. Her professional activities extend beyond the boundaries of Ra'anana. She is committed to enhancing the professional standing and education of Israeli librarians. She served as chairperson of the Association of Library Directors and worked diligently to achieve better professional standing for librarians. While talking about her profession Prince says Our duty as keepers of the literary treasures is to recognize the best literary works, to enjoy them, proclaim their worth by any means possible and to disseminate them among our public. It is our duty as librarians to educate the new generation of readers to read books and to enjoy books. The thought that they might miss the humor of Shalom Aleichm, the poetry of Rachel, Chaim Nachman Bialik and Leah Goldberg or the richly expressive language of David Grossman, Meir Shalev, Amos Oz and A.B.Yehoshua is hard to bear. Neither can we ignore the intellectual riches of the world's great authors. These words embody her philosophy and guide her deeds as the outstanding librarian of the year. [ha-Safran]: Congregation leaving space -- query
Safranim -- My synagogue is undergoing a major project, starting next spring. Our library is already boxed (and labeled), but they've asked me to help with other aspects of the process. A series of questions: Have other synagogues completely left their space for extended periods? We expect (hope) to be gone for about 2 years, while our building (except for the Sanctuary and Social hall) are razed and rebuilt. It's not yet clear how much of our equipment will be used and how much will need storage. I'd be interested in having documentation about these projects. If you didn't do it yourselves but know of others who have done it, I'd be interested in knowing who and where they are. We're starting with a few pieces from the URJ and the Archives in Cincinnati, but any additional help would be extremely valuable. I know this isn't precisely a Library question, but would like any help that can be provided. Respond off-list. [ha-Safran]: Talmud editions of D. Bomberg
In 1997 IDC of Leiden, Netherlands, issued 320 microfiches with accompanying materials entitled, The Talmud Editions of D. Bomberg, by A. Rosenthal. It appears from the LC record, as well as from the description on the IDC website that what this is is a set of fiche depicting what they bill as all tractates of the four editions by Bomberg, Venice, 1520-1549. I assume their major source for making these determinations is, Maamar al hadpasat ha-Talmud, by Raphael N.N. Rabinovicz, in the Habermann update of 1952. For anyone having access to the IDC set, I would be most grateful if you would check their accompanying printed materials and let me know what (if any) other sources they may list as the basis for their divisions and for any notes they may make. I find it interesting that out of all the responses and everyone's creative solutions to the problem, only 2 people implied using the situation (of no staff when teachers and students want to use the library) to try and lobby their administration for more funding, more staff and/or a rationalisation of hours open/usage.
