[ha-Safran]: Sign Language in Hebrew

2007-05-31 Thread Ben Pastcan
Hello Safranim,
As for my query about sign language in the last posting, I
am looking for resources that use sign language in Hebrew. I am
looking for like how to sign Hebrew prayers, the alphabet, and words
in conversational Hebrew in sign language. Thanks again to anybody
who can provide any resources.

Ben Pastcan

RE: [ha-Safran]: Sign Language in Hebrew and Ordering Library

2007-05-31 Thread Witty, Emily
Are you looking for Israeli Sign Language or English words in American
Sign Language?

Our-Way, a division of the National Council for the Jewish Disabled of
the OU, serves the Jewish Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community. They have
booklets, pamphlets, and even greeting cards. However, their signs are
American Sign Language and for English-speaking Deaf people. They have
"signed" brachot. For example: "Baruch" is the sign for "Blessed," which
may not be the same for "baruch" in the Israeli Hebrew-speaking Deaf
community. Sign Language is not universal.

Please call Rabbi Eliezer Lederfeind, Director or Batya Jacob, Program
Associate at 212-613-8127 for more information and resources.

I was going to suggest that, but text-wise there's not
a lot in there that one wouldn't find in a standard
translation of Esther. It's graphical and there is a
little drash here and there, but it's mostly an
adaptation of previously published, readily-available
material.

I do enjoy reading it myself, personally.

Our synagogue library is looking for a copy of David Curzon’s Modern
Poems on the Bible published by Jewish Publication Society in 1993
for our Rabbi’s study group. I have looked into buying used copies,
but they are quite pricey. If your library has an extra copy that

[ha-Safran]: Tiny Libraries at Convention 2007 - followup

2007-05-31 Thread Alison Epstein
Thanks to all who responded to my post seeking librarians from "tiny
libraries" to meet each other at the conference.

I am looking forward to meeting more "tiny" library people to share
experiences of those who wear many hats (cataloging, circulation,
marketing, programs, strategic planning, budgeting, website
development, system administration, fundraising, janitorial services,
etc) to perhaps pool resources (e.g., splitting an order of 100
brochures, etc. from Jewish Book Council, etc.) and for a social
network as well.

Per a couple of "veteran" responses, I'd like to encourage those
librarians to attend the roundtable session Monday morning
(8:30-10am) that best matches your role - (Part of the dilemma of my
"tiny" library is that it serves many roles - center/synagogue,
elementary grades, middle school, high school, etc. - , I wish I had
a clone to go to all 3 roundtables... centers/synagogues fits most
areas best for me). After that session, I'll stick around the
Sonora D3 area to meet anyone interested in getting together at a
later time - then we'll try to put together a table at the Awards Lunch.

At my first AJL conference (Oakland) I was struck by the magnitude
of larger libraries - resources, specialization, etc. - great
resources and a wealth of knowledge and expertise - and an amazingly
wonderful willingness to help. The conference is a wonderful place
to meet the "famous faces" from the AJL newsletter and website,
mentors, hasafran, podcasts, etc. and also to meet others who may not
have the expertise to participate at that level. I am excited to meet both.

I look forward to seeing you in Phoenix.

Shalom Safranim,
Thank you so much to all of you for answering my questions
about finding Jewish books in braille! Are there any resources out
there for learning the alphabet and words in sign language that are
also in Hebrew? I remember from my days at a Jewish summer camp
(ages ago) that there were certain movements you could do with your
hands to sign and they would mean certain words/letters in Hebrew.

I will be working for a small Jewish day school library
(infancy to sixth grade). Does anybody know any vendors that sell
bar codes, labels, scanners, and so on for a Jewish day school
library? What do other Jewish day school librarians here use for
buying library supplies?

I also want to know about different ways of purchasing
library materials for a small collection. What sources and review
journals do Jewish day school librarians use to buy library materials
(books, DVD's, CD's, and videos)? Does
www.amazon.com work or do people use something
else? I know I asked a lot of questions, so if you have any answers
to them please respond to my e-mail address below.

Todah rabbah,
Ben Pastcan

JEWISH BIBLIOGRAPHIES NOW AVAILABLE

June 2007 -- The Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) and the Jewish
Publication Society (JPS) have partnered to distribute bibliographies
highlighting great Jewish books. The lists "A Year of Celebrations,"
"Creating a Collection," and "Jewish Classics for Kids" were created
by AJL member librarians who are respected experts in the field of
Judaic literature.

A sampling from each bibliography is available as a PDF on the Jewish
Publication Society website, where you will also find information on
ordering the full bibliographies from the Association of Jewish
Libraries. The bibliographies include books from a wide variety of
publishers, but as a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting
Jewish literacy and learning, JPS thought it was appropriate to
publicize these materials through their website.

The Jewish Publication Society is a nonprofit educational
organization formed to enhance Jewish culture by promoting the
dissemination of religious and secular works, in the United States
and abroad, to all those interested in past and contemporary Jewish
life. Founded in 1888, JPS is the oldest publisher of Jewish titles
in the English language. Learn more at
http://www.jewishpub.org>www.jewishpub.org.

The Association of Jewish Libraries promotes Jewish literacy through
enhancement of libraries and library resources and through leadership
for the profession and practitioners of Judaica librarianship. AJL is
proud to offer many Judaic bibliographies and other guides to Judaica
librarianship in print and online at
http://www.jewishlibraries.org>www.jewishlibraries.org.

bibliographies from AJL, please visit:

[ha-Safran]: Query about graphics novels

2007-05-31 Thread Donald Weinshank
A colleague who has considerable expertise in this field offers these
comments.

As huge a fan of Will Eisner's work as I am, I have to say that I found "The
Plot" to be a disappointment. Unlike most of his work, this one is dense in
a way that I thought made it hard to read -- it is very text-heavy at times
and it tells a circular story of the propagation of the Protocols by those
who know them to be false, the discovery of the falsehood, and the
redistribution of the lies in the face of debunking (this may be
historically dead on, but it doesn't make for enlightening reading, IMO). On
the other hand, the reviewers on Amazon give it raves.

If people are looking for other Jewish-themed graphic novels, I'd suggest
Eisner's groundbreaking "A Contract with God" (Jewish immigrant experience)
and perhaps his "To the Heart of the Storm" (anti-Semitism); and he also has
one called "Fagin the Jew" which I have not yet read but have heard good
things about.

There's also Joe Kubert's "Yossel," in which he imagines what his life might
have been like in the Warsaw ghetto in 1943 if his family had not left
Poland when he was an infant in the late 1920s -- it's enormously powerful
-- and to a lesser extent, his "Jew Gangster." He also did an interesting,
but not entirely successful, comic book miniseries about his WWII character
Sgt. Rock, titled "The Prophecy," which has a strong Jewish element and has
been collected in a single volume.

I have not read "The Rabbi's Cat" by the French cartoonist Joann Sfar, but
hear that it's quite good.

JEWISH BIBLIOGRAPHIES FROM AJL AND JPS

PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA (May 30, 2007) - The Association of Jewish
Libraries (AJL) and the Jewish Publication Society (JPS) have
partnered to distribute bibliographies highlighting great Jewish
books. The lists "A Year of Celebrations," "Creating a Collection,"
and "Jewish Classics for Kids" were created by AJL member librarians
who are respected experts in the field of Judaic literature.

Learn more at
www.jewishpub.org.

To Survive Sobibor
Dov Freiberg
ISBN: 978-965-229-388-6
Format: Hardback 624 pages
Publish date: June 2007
Publisher: Gefen Publishing House
Price: $29.95

DESCRIPTION:
Dov Freiberg was only twelve when he was hurled into the crushing events
of the German occupation of Poland.

His father was killed by German soldiers in the first days of the war,
and his mother fought valiantly to keep her four children fed as the
ghetto walls grew more and more constricting. Smuggled out of the Warsaw
ghetto, young Dov was soon captured by the Nazis and imprisoned in the
living hell of Sobibor death camp, where he witnessed the extermination
of his people. One of several hundred inmates to escape during the
prisoners' revolt, he began anew his struggle for life in the unfriendly
forests of occupied Poland. By the time the Soviet army liberated the
region nine long months later, Freiberg found himself the lone survivor
of his family.

This is a story of the struggle for survival and for sanity throughout
the inhuman experiences of the Holocaust and the postwar years. The
author paints a phenomenally detailed picture of an individual life and
of the lives of the Jews of Poland before their destruction, during the
occupation and the Holocaust, and after liberation by the Soviet army.
With its comprehensive description of Sobibor and the prisoners' revolt,
this is not only the fascinating memoir of an extraordinary life but
also a valuable historical testimony.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Born in Warsaw in 1927, Dov Freiberg spent his early childhood years
inWarsaw and Lodz in the enveloping embrace of his family. One of the
few survivors of the Sobibor death campand a veteran of the famous
illegal immigrant vessel Exodus, he has lived in Israel since 1948,
fought in the 1948 Israeli War of Independence, the 1967 Six-Day War and
the 1973 Yom Kippur War. He dedicated his life to the memory of the
victims of the Holocaust and testified in the Eichmann trial in
Jerusalem, as in several other high-profile Nazi war crimes' trials. He
lectures regularly for students, soldiers and educational institutions.

To Survive Sobibor (1988) is Dov Freiberg's first book to be translated
into English. His other books are : A Journey To The Past With Dekel
Shibolim (1993), A Man as Any Other(1996) and Two Worlds (2001).

Dear Ben,

The following link may be helpful to

For some reason the Jewish Guild for the Blind's website is not
coming up tonight. They may be updating their website because I know
it was active just a week or so ago when I last used it.

We also have a local braille transcriber's group in this area which
may be able to transcribe specific books for you if needed. I would
be happy to get you in touch with them if you need a specific title.

Also Seedlings Braille Books for Children has about three board books
with Jewish themes available, in English with both print and
braille. Their website is: http://seedlings.org/

Please feel free to call me if I can be of any further assistance.
