THE FAQ of MODERN JUDAISM

Questions Posed to Jewish Legal Experts Show Vibrancy of Modern Jewish Life

"...provides a wonderful and accessible resource for the advanced student of
Halacha as well as the beginner. I have no doubt that this book will be a
tremendous resource for everyone who is interested in Halacha."

  Richard Joel, President, Yeshiva University

Living the Halachic Process: Questions and Answers for the Modern Jew
(Devora Publishing, August 2007) consists of over 100 questions that have
been culled from thousands of queries that have been sent by Jews from
different backgrounds and levels of observance throughout the world to the
Eretz Hemdah Institute in Jerusalem, Israel. The questions touch upon every
area of life and reveal the basic desire of the enquirers to understand the
response of Judaism to modern life.

Does a place of business require a mezuzah, and, if so, does one make a
blessing when affixing it?

Is there a minimum time that Shabbat and Yom Tov candles must remain lit?

Should one pray from a prayer book or by heart?

The answers themselves reveal the unique way that the Eretz Hemdah Institute
melds sound halachic responses with sensitivity to the individual and an
awareness, not easily found today, that it is not necessary to burden the
Jewish people with unnecessarily stringent laws.

In a detailed introduction, the editors present the development of halachic
literature over the centuries. They give the reader a fascinating,
behind-the-scenes look at the process a Rabbi goes through and the different
approaches used to form a teshuva (response to a legal question).

Re: [ha-Safran]: Library Closings

2007-08-21 Thread FromaJCC
There is a mixed message here. On the one hand, my job has recently
been down-sized and the library is now open only 20 hours a week. On
the other hand, the plans for the new JCC building call for a very
large library in a very prominent position. Seems a shame to build it
and not staff it

[ha-Safran]: OT: Welcome Home to the New Olim

2007-08-21 Thread Jacob Richman
Hi Everyone!

Congratulations to the 225 new olim from North America who made
aliyah today to their new homes in their ancient homeland - Israel.

Hundreds of guests were at Ben-Gurion airport this morning to
greet the new olim. I took pictures of this historic and exciting
event and posted them online at:

http://www.jr.co.il/pictures/israel/history/2007/a189.htm

When the first page appears, press the F11 key
to view the full length of the pictures. To move from page to page,
use the navigation buttons on the bottom of the screen.

May the aliyah from all over of the world grow and bring more
Jews back to their homeland, Eretz Yisrael.

Have a great day,
Jacob

RE: [ha-Safran]: Library Cutback and Closings

2007-08-21 Thread Adas Israel Librarian
Thanks to Evi for a thorough and knowledgeable comment on these issues.

Let me emphasize (again, with apologies) that in some cases, the closing
of the library isn't the issue. The library remains, but the librarian
position is gone -- and not always because of funding. In my previous
position at the Melvin J. Berman Hebrew Academy in Rockville, MD, my
half-time position was combined with the half-time funding of the
cultural arts position into one full-time person -- as the cultural arts
person, which she's terrific at, but including her being in charge of
the library. She is not a librarian.
This seems to be a case of "anyone can do this job, right?" You know,
you read a few stories, you check books in and out, what else do you
need to know? The administration (new the previous year) hasn't a clue
about what librarians do, what professional library education is about,
how much I was able to accomplish in four years, or the huge amount that
still needs to be done. They never came to the library and never had a
single conversation with me about the library. The "People of the Book"
and all that is like motherhood and apple pie. It seems wrong to me that
an institution should be able to call itself a "Hebrew Academy," but not
have a librarian, of all things.

I'd be glad to work on whatever AJL sets up to address these issues.

The school here is organizing a Jewish book fair for kids.
Is there some organization which has suggested kids Jewish books in English?
Jewish Book Club or anything like that?
