[ha-Safran]: Judaism and China

2008-01-21 Thread Tibi weisz
My book The Covenant and the Mandate of Heaven: An in-depth
comparative cultural study of Judaism and China- is available on
Amazon.com. Barnes&Noble or can be ordered through your local bookstore.

Description:
If China is yin there must be an opposing culture that matches her in
endurance, sustainability and depth.
Is Judaism the yang of China's yin?
What cultural bonds tied Judaism and China?
Israel and China, past, present and future.
These are just some of the topics explored in this book in a
historical setting: not Chinese nor Jewish, but Chinese AND Jewish.
The book compares ancient and contemporary Chinese sources with
corresponding Western literature to show that these two cultures
balanced each other in a cultural relationship of YIN and YANG: one
as a religion that deeply influenced Western cultures and the other
in an opposing environment secluded, isolated and little understood
by outsiders.
The book also presents China and Judaism through the eyes of the
people who have faithfully followed their tenets since antiquity.
Readers will see these two cultures in a new light: not as "fossils"
but as two vibrant cultures tied by invisible bonds to survive and
flourish to present day.

Subject: [ha-Safran]: New Aquisition from CYCO BOOKS

Window of the Soul

The Kabbalah of Rabbi Isaac Luria
(1534-1572)

Selections from Chayyim Vital
Translated by Nathan Snyder
Edited and with an introduction
By James David Dunn
copyright 2006
isbn # 0-8197-0803-8

Brown Vinyl Hard Cover, gold lettering 6" X 8.5" 204 pages

This book offers the first selection of kabbalah from the teachings
of Rabbi Isaac Luria (1534-1572) translated from the original pages
of the Hebrew. This book fulfills the need to bring a selection of
Rabbi Isaac Luria's teachings to Judaic and cross cultural channels
in modern society for the first time.
Lauria's kabbalah is as radical as it is revolutionary, because in
ways that other kabbalists never thought possible, he answers not
only the Jewish people's deepest questions of exile and homelessness,
but with a vision given only to the most gifted kabbalistic mystics,
he was to explain the very structure of the inner worlds of the
spirit and of their evolution that led to the ultimate birth of souls
and of our cosmos.

[ha-Safran]: "archiving" photographs

2008-01-21 Thread Stanley Nachamie
My synagogue is starting a project of labeling and archiving old photographs.
I'd appreciate advice anyone can give about such a project.
Here are some of the concerns of the person in charge of this project:

What is the best way to store old photos - in what kind of material?
I need the photos labeled and then we need to find what method works best
for archiving them (albums, boxes. etc). Keep space saving issues in
  mind.

Thank you.

Yeshiva Ketana of Manhattan located on the Upper West

process books, keep track of books on loan, order
books to improve the inventory . The librarian would
receive class visits or visits of individual boys
doing special projects. The librarian would also work
with the English teachers and English Principal to
coordinate the visits to the library for research or
for borrowing. The long term goal of the library is
to computerize the library holdings.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Accessing the Haaretz archive

2008-01-21 Thread Gita . Hoffman
Daer Paul,

We have an account with Haaretz that is literally a "pain in the
neck". Many of the Israeli Universities dropped it because of the
difficulty in using it or in charging the user to pay per article.

Israeli Universities wanted it to work as a " regular
database" which the institution or University subscribes to.

What we have is something called "asimonim" -- tokens. We purchased
1000 asimonim a few years ago and each time someone downloads an
article we use up a virtual token. While the database is ONLINE, it
is only accessable from the Central Library, not from other libraries
and not from Home.

We have asked and now I will ask again that it be set up like a "real
database".

We do have the Haaretz in microfiche from its inception until the
present (a delay of six months) as we have all Hebrew Israeli
newspapers in microfiche.

I am not sure that it works the same way abroad.

orther ads on the site (see

that JHP&A prefers not to disclose salary ranges. The
closest suggestion was "A generous compensation and

The desciptions of some of the employers are
interesting, but vague.

Re: [ha-Safran]: A neutral text comparing the Jewish denominations?

2008-01-21 Thread Shfirsch
Shalom Alba, Sylvia Firschein writing. You must have back issues of
Hadassah Magazine to know that information. Too bad that most of us
have not kept issues from so far back. Perhaps we should ask
Hadassah to publish this article in a booklet for librarians or they
or someone else can put it online for us to copy and keep for
information in our libraries. That's important information.

Maybe you can put this suggestion and all other suggestions on

Israeli News Archive DVD Showcases 1993-2007

The Villages, FL -- Israel News Faxx (www.israelnewsfaxx.com) has
presented daily breaking news and features from Israel and the Middle
East since 1993. Now researchers at educational institutions and
libraries can access the archive's searchable full-text DVD.

The DVD contains more than one gigabyte (1000 megabytes) of
information, 3,400-plus individual issues of Israel News Faxx and
nearly six million words.

Over the years, many research libraries have inquired about the
availability of such a collection. Subscribers to the daily edition
include the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion Klau
Library in Cincinnati. The original print-outs have been archived by
The Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives.

Journalist Don Canaan said, "Creating this archive provides a medium
by which Israel can tell its story, The DVD includes searchable
full-text ASCII, as well as Acrobat PDF issues from 1993 through
2007. The DVD and web site, www.israelnewsfaxx.com, have become
valuable resources containing regularly updated content and other information."

During the mid-1970s, Canaan lived and worked in Israel. For nearly
one-half-century, his award-winning films and articles have been
viewed and read at NBC and ABC News, the American Israelite in
Cincinnati and in United Press International dispatches. He retired
as an editor for LexisNexis in Miamisburg, Ohio, and now lives in
what many people refer to as "an adult Disney World," The Villages in
central Florida.

The Pew Internet and American Life Project reported that 62 percent
of the American 18-to-30-year-old tech-loving Generation Y group said
they visited a library during 2007.

"Internet use seems to create an information hunger and it is
information-savvy young people who are most likely to visit
libraries," Leigh Estabrook, a professor emerita at the University of
Illinois and co-author of the Pew report, told Reuters. The survey
indicated that 65 percent of that group researched information on the Internet.

The DVD is available (postpaid) for U.S. $99.95. Purchase orders from
recognized educational institutions are accepted. They should be sent
to Don Canaan, 611 Saint Andrews Blvd., The Villages, FL, 32159.
Payments may also be made to [EMAIL PROTECTED] via www.PayPal.com

RE: [ha-Safran]: Position Announcement

2008-01-21 Thread Lisa Silverman
Often public postings for higher level positions do not include the
salary for various reasons. Those who may be interested usually call
and get the information directly, as you did. I don't see it as an issue
for potential candidates.
