To: Hasafran,

We are proud to present the new 2008 CD version of The Bibliography
of the Hebrew Book, a unique application developed on top of C.D.I.
System's online publishing technology - NetIS, in cooperation with
The Hebrew Bibliography of E.P.I publishing.

During the last two years, both, the online version and the CD have
been broadened with thousands of new bibliographic records, two new
languages have been included and many texts corrected.

Today, The Bibliography of the Hebrew Book database totals up to
141,000 book records and more than 15,470 authors' biographies, including:

· About 2,500 new records (books).
· About 860 new biographies.
· One of the important components of this outstanding
database is the easy access to about 95,000 names of people which
either, contributed to the writing of a book or were related to the
publishing process. Until today, some of these people were hard to
locate, since names could appear in different forms and nuances,
hence complicating the search. In the new version, we made special
efforts on improving those records and tens of thousands of names
from the Jewish history, from different centuries all over the world
are presented with their literary and historical context.
· Added languages: Lithuanian (LET) and Juhuri (TAT) Language
of the Mountain Jews.
· Thousands of adjustments and text corrections.

RE: [ha-Safran]: Upcoming IFLA Conference in Ramallah

2008-02-27 Thread Bernstein, Steven (Library)
Perhaps the Association of Jewish Libraries should send a letter of
protest to IFLA similar to the one penned by NGO Watch and/or have our
membership send form letters to IFLA.

Thank you! Superb! Is there a way you could publicize your letter? --
perhaps by sending it to the broadcast and newspaper media that are
likely to mention the conference?

[ha-Safran]: NEW FOR PASSOVER! The Eybeshitz Hagaddah:

The Eybeshitz Hagaddah: Experiencing Redemption

First Ever English Translation of Work of Scholar Rav Yehonatan Eybeshitz

This is a book not only for the Seder table ….but for study and
perusal all the days of the year. The difficult is made
understandable and the obtuse is clarified in this work. I highly
recommend it. Rabbi Berel Wein

…[this] translation is a marked contribution to Agadic-Hagadic
literature. Rabbi Dovid Cohen

This Passover readers will be pleased to find that in the new
Eybeshitz Hagaddah (Devora Publishing, March 2008), Rabbi Yehonatan
Eybeshitz's unique works and his complex words of Torah are arranged
in an organized fashion, making them accessible and understandable.
Author Rabbi Shalom Hammer also includes his own additional, timely
and insightful commentaries that reveal new insights to share around
the Seder table while inviting the reader to experience the
redemption of Passover.

Rabbi Yehonatan Eybeshitz was known for his brilliance and
outstanding genius in Torah as well as his worldly knowledge in
science and philosophy. This was exhibited as he led the Jewish
community of Hamburg in the eighteenth century and debated religious
and philosophical issues with Christian theologians of his time. Rav
Yehonatan was a prolific writer and master teacher and this is the
first time that his works have been translated into English. Rav
Yehonatan was also a master Kabbalist and subject of much debate as
is any genius of a generation. The posthumous printing of so many of
his works is testimony to the profound influence his oral teachings
and character had on his contemporaries.

Readers will delve into the Torah thoughts of Rav Eybeshitz and
appreciate this master's ability to intertwine all disciplines of
Torah study and connect them in an understandable fashion. This
translation will benefit those who have a strong background in Torah
learning as well as those who are looking for refreshing and
innovative thoughts to share at the Pesach Seder. Readers will
experience redemption in a unique and personal way through the
teachings of one the greatest minds the Jewish people have ever known!

About the Author:
Rabbi Shalom Hammer has lived in Israel for over 18 years, served as
a Rabbi in the United States as well as for the IDF. He has the
unique experiences of serving in leadership positions in the American
Jewish Community as well as the Israeli Jewish World. These
experiences explain why Rabbi Hammer's diverse personality allots him
the opportunity to broadcast his weekly timely messages on OU Radio,
teach in Yeshivat Hesder Sderot to Israelis; and at the same time
travel throughout the Diaspora lecturing on crucial topics such as
Jewish Identity, Education and Eretz Yisrael.

[ha-Safran]: Prayerbook history and commentary

2008-02-27 Thread Rettberg, Dan
Dear Colleagues--

I am in need of a few suggestions of English titles on the history
and content of the classical Jewish prayers that I may recommend to
an educated adult patron (non-Jewish) who is literate in matters
generally religious and theological but not specifically Jewish. I
have spent some time doing subject searches on Judaism -- Liturgy
(LC classification) and variations, but everything I can find or
everything of which I am aware is either too technical on the one
hand or not scholarly enough on the other. Any assistance you may be
able to provide would be most welcome.

Thanks much,

[ha-Safran]: New Book Hardbitten Memories

2008-02-27 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Mazo Publishers announces the publication of Hardbitten Memories: In The
Blink Of An Eye: Memories Of A Child Born In A Displaced Persons Camp
by Yaakov Reinbach

Yaakov Reinbach's odyssey from his birth in a displaced persons camp in
Germany, through growing up and living in the United States, and finally
setting up a home in Israel, may not be typical of all children of
Holocaust survivors. Likewise all children of Holocaust survivors did
not necessarily have the same personal experiences or develop the same
sensitivities he did. However, his descriptions of the difficulties he
had communicating with his father, his contact with the world of
youthful rebellion in the 1960s, his brushes with anti-Semitism, his
fateful meetings with charismatic rabbis and his growing awareness of
the importance of Judaism for his personal life, will strike a chord
with many readers. Hardbitten Memories: At the Blink of an Eye stands as
an authentic testament of a child of Holocaust survivors coming of age
in America and coming to terms with his parents' past. Comments by Dr.
Robert Rozett, Director of the Libraries, Yad Vashem, The Holocaust
Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Authority, in Jerusalem.

[ha-Safran]: concerning a parsha bibliography

2008-02-27 Thread MARTV19
Google Behrman House. You will get their home page. Hit
catalogue and you are off and running.

Behrman House has several books that provide a synopsis of each of
the 54 parashiyot, with overviews etc. etc. -- a bibliography and
thematic index. From these one can locate storybooks with similar
themes - as does Linda Silver

Teaching Torah
Product Code: AO41 ISBN: 0-86705-041-1 $32.50

Teacing Haftarah
Product Code: AO54ISBN: 0-86705-054-3 $35.00 (BOTH ARE IN STOCK)

List the themes - we will all send you titles, although I no longer
am in a synagogue library.
