Re: [ha-Safran]: Chumash for 4th-6th graders?

2008-05-27 Thread Dina Tanners
Hello,
One possibility is TELL IT FROM THE TORAH, a 2-volume set by
Pitspopany Press, which has a more traditional presentation. I've
know teachers in non-orthodox schools who have used it.

According to the website for the publisher:
A succinct synopsis of the weekly Torah reading

Rabbinic interpretations

Open-ended questions

An original D'var Torah for the Shabbat table

Gemmatria - the numerical value of words

How the Haftarah relates to the Torah reading

A short humorous anecdote on the Torah reading

The sources, customs and laws of the Jewish Holidays
I have not seen Behrman House's THE EXPLORERS" BIBLE, but it looks
quite interesting.

For an introduction for those who do not like reading, you could try
Chaya Burstein's Kids' Cartoon Bible. It does not have all the
portions, and includes a bit of the Prophets and WRitings too.

Dear colleagues:

The winner of the 2008 Olive Branch Book Award (OBBA) is Julia's

novel, a Sydney Taylor Book Award winner, was the favourite of
children in grades 4 to 6 in several Toronto Jewish schools. The OBBA
reading program gives students the opportunity to read high-quality
Jewish books and vote for their choices. For more information,

RE: [ha-Safran]: Chumash for 4th-6th graders?

2008-05-27 Thread Adas Israel Librarian
What comes to mind immediately is the series "My First Parsha Reader,"
but they're for younger children. However, "The Little Midrash Says"
series, and The Family Midrash Says" series are appropriate for older
children and families. They include a telling of the Weekly Torah
reading.
These are all available from Bnay Yakov Publications (1742 East 7th
Street, Brooklyn, New York 11223; phone 718-376-5903.)

The complication is, as you will have realized from the publisher
information, is that these books are definitely told from the Orthodox
beliefs. They are filled with Hebrew words; translated in parenthesis
the first time they are used.

They are classic books, and I have them in my Conservative Synagogue
library, but they not meet your needs. (The kids would learn a lot,
though!)

[ha-Safran]: Public transit to AJL Convention hotel from airport

2008-05-27 Thread Amanda_Seigel
(Please note: this email was also submitted directly to Aaron Kuperman).

Dear Aaron,

Thanks for your inquiry about public transit to the hotel [for the AJL
Convention]. You make an important point.

Before undertaking this effort, I investigated the possibility of taking
public transportation to the hotel.

Apparently it is possible to get there by taking light rail and then two
busses, but depending on the time and day of arrival that could take a few
hours (1 1/2 to 2 1/2) and involve a lot of waiting.

I used the trip planner available online: http://tripplanner.gcrta.org/

If you find out anything else about public transit, I would appreciate
knowing about it. Maybe there is a faster solution available.

Thanks!

Sincerely,

Amanda
