[ha-Safran]: Records from the Jewish National and University Library
FYI in case people haven't already seen the announcement. From: OCLC Non-Latin Scripts Discussion List On Behalf Of Patton,Glenn Sent: Wednesday, July 09, 2008 10:45 AM Subject: Records from the Jewish National and University Library OCLC has begun adding records from the Jewish National and University Library (JNUL) to WorldCat. An initial load of more than 550,000 Hebrew-script records have been processed. The OCLC symbol for the JNUL is J9U. Additional files of Latin-script records as well as Arabic-script and Cyrillic-script records will be added over the next few weeks. Some sample Hebrew-script records include #232696837, #232697211 and #232693320. The Hebrew-script records do not have romanized fields paired with the fields containing script data. The language of cataloging (field 040, $b) is coded as Hebrew. If other OCLC users wish to have a record that contains paired fields, they should create a parallel record following the guidelines in Bibliographic Formats and Standards, section 3.10 (http://www.oclc.org/bibformats/en/specialcataloging/default.shtm#BCGBAEHC). [ha-Safran]: Bindery commendation
Friends, I have just unpacked a shipment of books that I sent to be rebound and/or repaired at the Bridgeport National Bindery. The quality of the work exceeded my highest expectations. I had sent books with a variety of problems, among them: One book, with just one loose signature, was repaired without any visible alteration. An old monograph has a new fabric cover, with title and author stamped in gold on spine and front cover. Several hardcover books were given new, laminated covers with digitized images of their original covers or dust jackets. Best of all, battered paperback copies of Gerda Weissman Klein's Promise of a New Spring, now out-of-print, were converted to hardcover books with laminated covers, also with digitized i div For the library, the cost of rebinding was approximately $11/volume. Individuals may send books for rebinding for approx. $33/volume. For valuable books, the bindery has a conservator available to work on them. In addition to doing fine work, the bindery was attentive and responsive to questions and communication, whether by email or by phone. I recommend the Bridgeport National Bindery without reservation. In this exhibit, scholars of the classical world grapple with the complex and multifarious material sources and received texts upon which are understanding of the Roman empire and its minorities is built. In contrast to earlier generations of studies of the rabbis and their world, this past year's CAJS Fellows focused on the imperial context of which Judaism was but one small piece. This approach produced vigorous, new challenges to the kinds of evidence and questions traditionally applied to the study of Judaism in Antiquity, an era of seminal transformation in Jewish culture, law, society, art, and practice. Shoshanh. You and Cheryl are geniuses. Would you mind getting busses on Shabbat as well? There are many reasons why some of us come early. The main one is so that if there is a delay we'll have a better chance getting on time. It used to be cheaper flying on Saturdays even if there was the cost of the hotel It is no longer the case. Re: [ha-Safran]: AJL 2009 in Chicago - transportation
Hi Aaron, Henry and all: There is no bias against mass transit. This is what I suggested in my first email to ha-safran when I sent the URLS. This is where you found the information you just talked about. But, because there is a but like in all good discussion, for those members who prefer not to tackle mass transit at the end of the convention, when they are carrying books and other items bought at the exhibit, we are thinking of offering the option of one bus that will leave the hotel at a certain time to take the members to either O'Hare or Midway. For those members who will ship their purchases, CTA is a great option, by all means! Public transportation in Chicago is decent. Please avail yourselves of what it has to offer.
