Book Release: The Eternal Bond: A Guide to the Laws, Customs, and
Traditions of the Jewish Wedding

Mazal Tov! The engagement's official. Now what?

Jerusalem, Israel — Now's the time when the bride, groom, and their
prospective families throw themselves into the vast sea of wedding
to-do's, with endless errands that need to be done and myriad
decisions that need to be made.

But as the exciting day draws closer, the thinking couple will want
more than just tangible preparation—they'll want to learn about the
laws and the customs of this auspicious time; they'll want to enhance
their appreciation for the beautiful traditions that every Jewish
couple wishes to observe.

Targum Press is proud to announce the much-awaited release of The
Eternal Bond— the most inspiring and yet practical Jewish wedding
guide available, offering insights and direction from the dating
process through the sheva brachot.

In The Eternal Bond, Rabbi Chaim Press gives meaningful explanations
for the customs and laws of the Jewish wedding and engagement in a
clear, informative, and fascinating presentation. Using classic
Talmudic and Rabbinic sources, he explores each of the traditions and
details their halachic impact in an enjoyable, easy-to-read way. And
with inspiring stories and anecdotes sprinkled throughout the
chapters, the author has created much more than just a guidebook—he's
produced an engaging read, and a masterful blend of Jewish law and thought.

So as the wedding train gathers speed, it's clear that The Eternal
Bond is a bride-groom-family essential. And for rabbis, educators,
and anyone involved in helping young couples prepare for marriage, it
is definitely the ideal wedding book to recommend. Congratulations!

Book Release: Walking Mom Home: Sharing the Blessings of this Life's
Final Journey
Miriam Millhauser Castle

It's a situation that's become universal. But for a child caring for
a loved one, the pain is very real, and the challenge very personal.
How do we embrace it with love and strength?

Jerusalem, Israel (June 2008) – As the sandwich generation grows
older, more and more adults today are confronted with the
overwhelming task of serving as caregivers to aging and terminally
ill parents. Though these circumstances are now widespread, little
has been written to guide or support the selfless individuals
involved as they tackle a challenge that is unlike any they've ever faced.

Targum Press announces the release of Walking Mom Home by Miriam
Millhauser Castle, well-known educator, counselor, and author of
Inner Torah and Practical Inner Torah published by Targum Press,
draws from her own experiences and years of client work to address
the challenges of this painful process. With warmth, wisdom, and
depth, she gives a poignant account of the time she spent with her
mother in the last year of her mother's life. As mother and daughter
joined forces to overcome the hardships of terminal illness, they
turned what could have been a difficult time into a powerful
opportunity to strengthen their bond, to come closer to G-d, and to
find meaning in life—and in death. As the end drew near, the two
stood at the door to the next world and faced the transition with
love and equanimity.

On the other side of the loss lies the equally powerful process of
grieving. For this stage too, the author tells an uplifting and
life-changing account that touches the depths of our souls, and helps
us discover unknown reservoirs of faith.

Whether they are caregivers, mourners, or adults seeking to enhance
the way they honor their parents, readers of Walking Mom Home will
find comfort, guidance, and strength.

RE: [ha-Safran]: AJL Newsletter book reviews

2008-07-13 Thread Bernstein, Steven (Library)
Rita,

As you are aware (since you helped me with the project), the NYMA
chapter has almost the entire run of our chapter newsletter available
online on our website http://www.ajlnyma.org/news.htm with a one-issue
embargo. We have a total of 34 issues and are missing only 5.

I can't imagine that digitizing the AJL Newsletter would be too time
consuming, since the AJL Newsletter is only at Volume 27:4 and there
would only be 108 issues to digitize. Since some of the more recent
issues were most likely born digital, the number of issues for
digitization might actually be less. At most, I see such a project as
taking a year or less. The hardest part, I think, will be finding back
issues. If digitizing the Newsletter is something that AJL is
interested in doing, I would be willing to work with some other people
on this effort.

Steven

[ha-Safran]: Israel/Palestine subject headings

2008-07-13 Thread Vanessa Freedman
One of our cataloguers asked me about LCSH subject headings for a book about
archaeological excavations at Mount Carmel. The subject headings in the
downloaded record were all for Palestine, but we were both under the
impression that you are supposed to use the current designation for a
country.

The scope note under the heading Palestine seems to imply that it refers to
the whole of what is now Israel and the 'various disputed territories', but
oddly under narrower terms it lists Gaza Strip and West Bank, but not
Israel. The subheadings under Israel seem to imply that it refers only to
the modern state of Israel, while Israel, Ancient has a cross-reference to
Jews. There are headings for both Israel--Antiquities, and
Palestine--Antiquities.

I am now extremely confused - can anyone shed any light on this?

Thanks

this. -- Lee Jaffe, UC Santa Cruz

2008-07-13 Thread Miller, Philip
Dear Aaron -

I used the train from the airport to the hotel, and it was a
farshlepter zakh. Yes, it was inexpensive, but it took forever! And
then to add insult to injury, we had to shlep the bags from the train
stop to the hotel. By the time I arrived I was oysgematet and knew I
had made a poor choice.

The shared taxi to the airport after the conference was a breeze.

My trey zuzey,

The Hijacking of British Islam How extremist literature is
subverting mosques in the UK Denis MacEoin 2007 ( 202 pgs)

Denis MacEoin holds a Ph.D. in Persian studies from the University of
Cambridge. He taught Arabic and Islamic Studies at Newcastle
University and was for many years an honorary fellow at Durham
University. He is currently the Royal Literary Fund Fellow at
Newcastle University.

Download:http://www.policyexchange.org.uk/Publications.aspx?id=430

This report is the result of a year long investigation carried out by
Policy Exchange into the character of the literature currently
available in mainstream sites of Islamic religious instruction in the
UK. During 2006 and 2007, four Muslim research teams travelled to
towns and cities across the UK. They visited a large number
of important Islamic religious institutions, including leading
mosques, to determine the extent to which literature inculcating
Muslim separatism and hatred of nonbelievers was accessible in those
institutions - both in terms of being openly available and also being
obtainable 'under the counter'. In total, almost 100 sites were visited.

Altogether some 80 books and pamphlets were collected for this
report. Thirty eight (48% of the total) were in English. Thirty six
were in Arabic (45%) and six (7%) in Urdu.

Example: You will not find any confusion in which the Jews did not
play a role…Their attempt at trying to immerse nations in vice and
the spread of fornication. The Jews controlled this kind of trade and
promoted it. They manage the bars in Europe and the United States and
in Israel itself. Al-Hadith wa'l-thaqafa al-Islamiyya [Prophetic
Tradition and Islamic Culture] - 1st Grade High School; found at the
King Fahad Academy, west London.

The report makes several key recommendations::

i) The Saudi Arabian government must be told to stop distributing
extremist literature in Britain or else risk its good relations. King
Abdullah of Saudi Arabia is currently on a state visit to the UK and
the British government should address this matter directly with him.
ii) Mosques and other Islamic institutions must act immediately to
remove extremist literature from their premises.
iii) The government, local authorities, police forces, other
institutions and prominent individuals should have nothing to do with
mosques that continue to sell or distribute extremist literature.
iv) Islamic schools must be subject to clear and rigorous regulation
and made part of a genuinely shared system of national education.

[ha-Safran]: Survey on Language and Identity

2008-07-13 Thread Marga Hirsch
Begin forwarded message:

You are invited to participate in an interesting and entertaining survey
about language. Essentially, we're asking about the spread of Yiddish
(and some Hebrew) among English speakers in North America. We're
turning to both Jews and non-Jews to answer questions like these: Who
uses Yiddish words like shmooze and daven and phrases like Money,
shmoney? Why do some people say temple while others say shul? Who
prefers biblical names for their babies? Your responses will help us
answer these and other questions, and you might learn something about
yourself in the process. Please set aside 15-20 minutes, and click on
this link to participate.

Dear Vivian,

That is a very difficult figure to come up with since it varies so
much by State and by experience. I am a Day School librarian and I am
paid a salary comparable to the public school teacher salary in my
area. Unfortunately, though, we do not have comparable benefits.
