2008-10-05 Thread Michelle Sandler
Dear Librarians:

Where do I buy Jewish children's books to get the most books for my
money? I am thinking of current books from the last four years or
so. Thank You for your previous responses.

My choices could be:
Amazon.Com
Barnes and Noble.Com
Barnes and Noble
Books-A-Million.Com
Borders
Ingram
BakerTaylor
Book Publishers themselves

I have a faculty identification card from Westwood College where I am
the Librarian.

[ha-Safran]: Music bibliographies

2008-10-05 Thread Marie
Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone had a list of recommended compact discs of
Hebrew/Israeli/Jewish music suitable for elementary school children
that you'd be willing to share. I am working on developing some
priorities for a music collection for Temple Ohabei Shalom (currently
we have almost none) and was hoping some of you great synagogue
librarians could help me out. Our priority is definitely stuff for
kids- family friendly learning and recreational music. Any and all
suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

Shana tova,
Marie

[ha-Safran]: Introducing myself

2008-10-05 Thread Kolodney, Uri
Hello,

My name is Uri Kolodney. I was recently appointed as the Interim
Hebraica Judaica Bibliographer at the University of Texas at Austin
Libraries. From previous postings I understand that some of you knew
Nathan Snyder. If you have any questions about Nathan, please email
me off list.

As for myself, I don't have any professional background in Jewish
Studies. I am a professional librarian here in the UT Libraries and I
manage the Digitization Services unit. I do have knowledge of Hebrew
and Israeli culture and I am fluent in Hebrew. Thanks to AJL, I was
recently 'matched' with Leah Hauser from the Baltimore Hebrew
University to be my mentor, and I thank her and the AJL for that.

I joined this list a few weeks ago and already used some of the
information provided. I hope to learn more about Hebrew and Jewish
librarianship during the coming year (especially cataloging and
collection management); I also apologize in advance is some of my
potential questions to the list might be 'lame' or too basic… - but,
as they say, Nor can the shy man learn…. J

I wish you all Shanah Tovah Umetuka!

well-known cantor. Enjoy!

THE MAN WHO SPOKE TO GOD:
Book/CDs capture the artistry of world-famous Jewish cantor, Leib Glantz

BOCA RATON, Fla., August 2008 ? A newly published book and CD set is
a scholarly and personal tribute to Leib Glantz, considered by many
to be one of the greatest cantors and composers who ever lived.

Edited by his son, Jerry Glantz, with contributions by the most
important thinkers and practitioners of cantorial and Jewish
music?and music in general?this stunning book provides a
comprehensive overview and analysis of Glantz?s significant
contributions to cantorial art over the past century. Known as ?the
people?s cantor?, Glantz (1898-1964) has been recognized throughout
the world as a brilliant composer, interpreter and cantor, as well as
a scholar and teacher of Jewish music.

Two high-quality compact discs, included with the book, feature 30 of
Leib Glantz?s most important compositions?some of which have never
been heard before?
as sung by the world-renowned cantor.

The Man Who Spoke to God includes 20 of Glantz?s most important
articles and lectures, including his monumental lecture at the 1952
Convention of the Cantors Assembly, as well as his six famous
lectures on Nu?sach (the traditional Jewish prayer modes) that were
broadcast on Israel?s national radio in 1961. An additional 53
essays?many of academic quality?include writings by some of the
greatest minds in sacred music.

CRITICAL PRAISE FOR THE MAN WHO SPOKE TO GOD

?... his recordings are filled with passion, beauty and yearning ? as
is this book about him.?
-- Elie Wiesel, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate

?I still thrill to Glantz?s recordings. There is no one quite like
him in the originality, beauty and integrity of his renditions of our
sacred music.?

[ha-Safran]: Duplicate Hebrew books

2008-10-05 Thread Veronica Belling
Shalom Safranim

After just sending off a large shipment of duplicate and other
Yiddish donations to the National Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, I
was wondering what if anything one can do with large numbers of
duplicate Hebrew books mostly from the 1950s and 1960s? I don't
think that they are appropriate for the Jewish Day Schools here in
Cape Town. It would be too time consuming to make disposal lists, as
I run our library on my own and my student assistant does not know
any Hebrew at all.

Any ideas?

Subject: [AIEA] The Old Collection Of Hebrew Manuscripts Thoroughly Studied

THE OLD COLLECTION OF HEBREW MANUSCRIPTS THOROUGHLY STUDIED

AZG Armenian Daily
01/10/2008

Science

The old collection of Hebrew manuscripts kept in Matenadaran
includes the manuscripts brought from Etchmiatsin in 1940. The new
one consists of more than 100 parchment scrolls of the 19th century
brought form Ukraine in 1980s. The old collection was enriched
in 1920-50s; overall, 21 manuscripts are registered. Yosif Amusin,
Dr. of Institute of Oriental Studies of Russia's Academy of Sciences,
studied 13 of these manuscripts in 1969.

From March of this year, Matenadaran's new scientific worker Ruzan
Poghosian, specialized in Hebrew language at Jerusalem Jewish
University in 2000, started the study of all the 21 manuscripts.

Among the 7 manuscripts, studied first time, she found out a Sanskrit
manuscript received from Varuzhan Malatian in 1967.

Especially the 185-page leather manuscript aroused interest. In
contrast to other manuscripts, it is not just a rewriting of the books
of the Old Testament but an interpretation of both the Old Testament
and several books of the Talmud. There are also several unfamiliar
titles, for example, After Death (akharey mavet), which she cannot find
in the Old Testament in Hebrew or in Internet materials about Talmud.

According to the Hebraist, long time is needed to study the manuscript
thoroughly as it is written in illegible, small letter and peculiar
handwriting. In order to work on a manuscript of that volume, to
acquire the necessary skills and to make the study easier it is
necessary to establish a relationship with Jerusalem Institute of
Hebrew Manuscripts.

Most of the manuscripts of the old collection are extracts from the
books of Genesis, Exodus, Numbers, Deuteronomy and Esther of the Old
Testament. There are also three Charms that, according to Poghosian,
give sufficient grounds to studies based on comparison of the Charms
in Armenian.

[ha-Safran]: Cataloging Jewish - Yoga materials in Elazar

2008-10-05 Thread Halber, Michelle
I'm looking for ideas on cataloging our Yoga materials in our Elazar
collection – we currently have two books… one on Yoga using Hebrew
letters, and one on Yoga using Torah. I think we should put them in
the same place, but the best I can up with at the moment is
164.9 (Non-Jewish Kabbalistic Adaptations – Comparative Mysticism).

Any suggestions? I've really spent too much time on this, but I
expect this is an area that will grow, and I'm looking to only
struggle with this only once.

[ha-Safran]: News Report of interest to librarians from HaAretz

Here is the beginning of a report from the Israeli newspaper, HaAretz
about how Israel has banned books in Arabic from a major supplier
—the entire article can be read

'How can the People of the Book be against books?'

By Reuters

Tags: Israel News, Arab, Book

For 15 years Israeli Arab Salah Abassi has traded books between
Israel and its Arab neighbors, fostering a rare cultural link.

But in August Israeli authorities suddenly refused to renew his
trading license because he was trading with enemy states Lebanon and
Syria, frustrating both Abassi's business and the Arab and Israeli
readers he has helped interest in each other's literary traditions.

How can the People of the Book be against books? Abassi asked,
evoking the Jewish Bible as the first monotheistic holy text. Books
are a bridge to peace between cultures.

Sukkot is the Jewish holiday that commemorates how protective
Clouds of Glory surrounded the Jewish people after leaving
Egypt during the forty years of wandering in the desert.
It also commemorates how the Jews lived in temporary dwellings
during that same time.
Sukkot begins Monday night, October 13, 2008.

The J Site - Jewish Education and Entertainment

http://www.j.co.il

has several entertaining features to celebrate Sukkot:

Jewish Trivia Quiz: Sukkot

What is the Hebrew date of the first day of Sukkot ?
What is another name for the Sukkot holiday ?
What does Sukkot commemorate ?
What is the minimum area of a Sukkah as defined in the Talmud ?
What is the maximum height of a Sukkah ?
What does the Aramaic word Ushpizin mean ?
Who gets called to the Torah reading on Simchat Torah ?

The above questions are examples from the multiple choice
Flash quiz. There are two levels of questions, two timer settings.
Both kids and adults will find it enjoyable.

Additional Sukkot resources and games on the J site include:
Free Sukkot Clipart
The Hebrew Hangman Game
The Multilingual Word Search Game (English / Hebrew / Russian)
My Hebrew Songbook (Hebrew Song Lyrics)
My Jewish Coloring Book (online / offline)

The J site has something for everyone, but if that is not
enough, I posted on my website 62 links about Sukkot,
from laws and customs to games and recipes.
Site languages include English, Hebrew, Russian, Spanish,
French, Portuguese, German and Italian.

All 62 links have been reviewed / checked this week.
The web address is:

http://www.jr.co.il/hotsites/j-hdaysu.htm

I also created a list of 16 cool Sukkot YouTube videos.
The address is:
http://www.jr.co.il/videos/sukkot-videos.htm

Please forward this message to relatives and friends,
so they may benefit from these holiday resources.

Enjoy!
Happy Sukkot!

Re: [ha-Safran]: Where to Buy Jewish Children's Books at a Discount

2008-10-05 Thread Susan Dubin
Dear Michelle,
You can get Jewish books at all the places you named. There are also
several booksellers who advertise in the AJL Newsletter and post
announcements on HaSafran. In addition, AJL has arranged with Kar-Ben
and Pitspopany/Devora to offer discounts to members. Mackin also
offers a discount to AJL members.
Hope this helps!

Re: [ha-Safran]: Introducing myself

2008-10-05 Thread Susan Dubin
Welcome, Uri! We are very happy to have you as a member of AJL and
wish every success at UT-Austin. You made a good decision to ask for
an AJL Mentor. I know Leah will be agreat help to you. We also
welcome your posts to HaSafran. Our organization is very friendly and
willing to help each other with our questions and concerns about
Judaic librarianship. Hopefully, you will be able to attend one of
our conferences and meet some of us in person! There are several
librarians in the Austin area who are long time AJL members.
Hopefully you will cross paths with them as well.

Wishing you a Shana Tova and best of luck in your new position,
Susan Dubin
AJL President
