[ha-Safran]: Music bibliographies
Hi all, I was wondering if anyone had a list of recommended compact discs of Hebrew/Israeli/Jewish music suitable for elementary school children that you'd be willing to share. I am working on developing some priorities for a music collection for Temple Ohabei Shalom (currently we have almost none) and was hoping some of you great synagogue librarians could help me out. Our priority is definitely stuff for kids- family friendly learning and recreational music. Any and all suggestions are welcome and appreciated. [ha-Safran]: Introducing myself
Hello, My name is Uri Kolodney. I was recently appointed as the Interim Hebraica Judaica Bibliographer at the University of Texas at Austin Libraries. From previous postings I understand that some of you knew Nathan Snyder. If you have any questions about Nathan, please email me off list. As for myself, I don't have any professional background in Jewish Studies. I am a professional librarian here in the UT Libraries and I manage the Digitization Services unit. I do have knowledge of Hebrew and Israeli culture and I am fluent in Hebrew. Thanks to AJL, I was recently 'matched' with Leah Hauser from the Baltimore Hebrew University to be my mentor, and I thank her and the AJL for that. I joined this list a few weeks ago and already used some of the information provided. I hope to learn more about Hebrew and Jewish librarianship during the coming year (especially cataloging and collection management); I also apologize in advance is some of my potential questions to the list might be 'lame' or too basic - but, as they say, Nor can the shy man learn . [ha-Safran]: Duplicate Hebrew books
Shalom Safranim After just sending off a large shipment of duplicate and other Yiddish donations to the National Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, I was wondering what if anything one can do with large numbers of duplicate Hebrew books mostly from the 1950s and 1960s? I don't think that they are appropriate for the Jewish Day Schools here in Cape Town. It would be too time consuming to make disposal lists, as I run our library on my own and my student assistant does not know any Hebrew at all. Any ideas? The new one consists of more than 100 parchment scrolls of the 19th century brought form Ukraine in 1980s. The old collection was enriched in 1920-50s; overall, 21 manuscripts are registered. Yosif Amusin, Dr. of Institute of Oriental Studies of Russia's Academy of Sciences, studied 13 of these manuscripts in 1969. From March of this year, Matenadaran's new scientific worker Ruzan Poghosian, specialized in Hebrew language at Jerusalem Jewish University in 2000, started the study of all the 21 manuscripts. Among the 7 manuscripts, studied first time, she found out a Sanskrit manuscript received from Varuzhan Malatian in 1967. Especially the 185-page leather manuscript aroused interest. In contrast to other manuscripts, it is not just a rewriting of the books of the Old Testament but an interpretation of both the Old Testament and several books of the Talmud. There are also several unfamiliar titles, for example, After Death (akharey mavet), which she cannot find in the Old Testament in Hebrew or in Internet materials about Talmud. According to the Hebraist, long time is needed to study the manuscript thoroughly as it is written in illegible, small letter and peculiar handwriting. In order to work on a manuscript of that volume, to acquire the necessary skills and to make the study easier it is necessary to establish a relationship with Jerusalem Institute of Hebrew Manuscripts. Most of the manuscripts of the old collection are extracts from the books of Genesis, Exodus, Numbers, Deuteronomy and Esther of the Old Testament. There are also three Charms that, according to Poghosian, give sufficient grounds to studies based on comparison of the Charms in Armenian. __ AIEA Mail List Home: http://aiea.fltr.ucl.ac.be/ Info: http://telf.com/aiea Archive: http://telf.com/aiea-archive Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) === Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] SUBscribing, SIGNOFF commands send to: Listproc @ lists.acs.ohio-state.edu Questions, problems, complaints, compliments;-) send to: galron.1 @ osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html History: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/history.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org
