Re: [ha-Safran]: Gale Racism Encyclopedia follow-up

2009-03-10 Thread Shmuel Ben-Gad
Thank you for pursuing this. I hope it bears fruit. In my frank
opinion, unless they remove the article from the online version and
at least make some good faith effort to minimize the damage caused by
the entry in the print version,, they will not be responding adequately.

[ha-Safran]: DK Publication on Film

2009-03-10 Thread Helene or Murray Tuchman
The DK Publication Eyewitness companions: Film by Daniel Bergan, c2006 has
no entry under Israel as a country in the Index. When I searched the
handbook I found a page under The Middle East. In the text Bergan mentions
Israel and Palestine tensions, then discusses Israeli director's Eran Riklas
The Syrian Bride and lists the film as originating in Palestine. There
are no articles at all about the Israeli film industry.

I think it's a wonderful resource, and I thank everyone involved in it.
If Palestine means what it used to mean to us, I think it should say
Palestine (pre-State Israel).

Re: [ha-Safran]: Online Encyclopedia of Jewish Women.

2009-03-10 Thread Bernard Katz
Lee Jaffee's thoughtful take on the treatment of Palestine in
this encyclopedia is a welcome alternative view to that of David
Elazar, who want's to eliminate Palestine as a geographical entity.

Amazingly, this is indeed a free resource, from the intro
http://jwa.org/encyclopedia/about.

I've perused most of the the Canadian entries and find them to be
very thorough and accurate. Best of all is the concept of the
encyclopedia as a growing resource - yasher koakh to all involved!
Khag Purim sameakh,
Bernard.

[ha-Safran]: New YA Book Announcement from JPS: Naomi's Song

2009-03-10 Thread Anita Bihovsky
New from the Jewish Publication Society:
Naomi's Song
By Selma Kritzer Silverberg

http://www.jewishpub.org/product.php?id=314
For Ages 12 and up (contains some mature content)
A modern midrash for teenage girls
Set in the fortified city of Bethlehem and the mountainous towns of
Moab, this young adult novel imagines the life of the biblical Naomi
and her deep friendship with her daughter-in-law Ruth. It traces
Naomi's suffering at the hands of warring tribes; her struggles as a
woman of low rank in the ancient world; and Ruth's and Naomi's
perseverance, both individually and together. Filled with adventure
and romance, this modern midrash is a story of personal growth,
female friendship, and the power of inner strength.
Selma Kritzer Silverberg was born in 1908 in Cleveland, Ohio. She
wrote Naomi's Song in 1959 as a birthday gift for her daughter, Judy,
but it lay hidden until its discovery, after her death, in the spring of 2005.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Middle East Review - book reviews

2009-03-10 Thread Bernard Katz
Many thanks to David for his useful listing of relatively new books
dealing [with] Israel, the Palestinians, and the Middle East along
with links to the reviews. I would just note that the reviews he has
provided links to are ALL from the same source - The Middle East
Forum. This organization and those who write for it tend to have the
same pov on middle eastern affairs - check who is on their List of
Experts. Nothing wrong with that in itself, as long as you know
about it. I would suggest that other reviews of these books may have
differing opinions about them. Librarians should be aware of inherent
biases in reviewers, regardless of their bent, and seek a range of
reviews if at all possible.
All best,
Bernard.
