[ha-Safran]: Magazines for Conservative Jewish teens

2009-03-26 Thread library
Dear Hasafran,
I head the library of over 7,600 volumes for our Conservative Synagogue.

About two weeks ago, I had asked Hasafran for a recommendation of
magazines to interest our synagogue's Conservative Jewish teens. A
few members recommended Yaldah, a magazine for Orthodox Jewish Girls.

For any of you who might be interested, I obtained the following
excellent magazine recommendations for Conservative Jewish teens from
the Education Director of United Synagogue's Youth Dept.:

J Vibe
Dash Magazine for Jewish Teenagers (pub. in Israel by The Jerusalem Post)

[ha-Safran]: New translation of Peretz Markish

2009-03-26 Thread Hasafran
The Dora Teitelboim Center for Yiddish Culture is proud to announce
the publication of its 13th book of Yiddish translations, Inheritance
(Yerushe) by Peretz Markish, translated by Mary Schulman, edited by

Mary Schulman, Joan Braman (Shulman's daughter) and David Weintraub,
foreword by Elie Wiesel.
TSAR Publications
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
ISBN: 978-1-894770-42-

This bilingual Yiddish/English collection is the first complete
translation of a volume of Markish' s poetry in English. One of the
most gifted and remarkable Yiddish poets of the former Soviet Union,
he was renowned in his day in Russia and throughout the
Yiddish-speaking world. He produced forty works, including poetry,
novels and plays, many of which were translated into Russian. Peretz
Markish was born in 1895 in Volhynia, Ukraine and was executed in
1952 in Stalin's purge of Jewish writers. Despite attempts to
categorize him as a "modernist," "expressionist," "naturalist," or
"Symbolist," his style was strikingly unique.

The book is published with the original Yiddish text and English
translations on facing pages. It may be purchased at local bookstores
or online at

www.yiddishculture.org

[ha-Safran]: Digitized manuscript: The Rothschild Haggadah

2009-03-26 Thread elhanan
The National Library of Israel, David and Fela Shapell Family
Digitization Project, is pleased to announce that a digitized version
of the Library's "Rothschild Haggadah" is now available for public access.

The so-called "Rothschild Haggadah" or "Murphy Haggadah" has a
fascinating history. Until 1939 it was in the possession of the
Rothschild family, but during World War II it was looted by the Nazis
and disappeared. After the war, the Haggadah was acquired by a
distinguished Yale alumnus, Dr. Fred Towsley Murphy who bequeathed it
to the Yale University Library in 1948. In 1980 it was identified as a
Rothschild manuscript and returned to its former owners who donated it
to the Jewish National and University Library (now the National
Library of Israel).

The manuscript was written in Northern Italy ca. 1450, copied and
illuminated by (or in the workshop of) the famous scribe-illuminator
Joel ben Simeon.

The manuscript was missing three leaves, probably detached before it
was acquired by the Rothschilds. Recently two of the missing
illuminated leaves were offered for sale and were purchased for the
Library through the generosity of two anonymous donors.

This digitized version of the manuscript includes the two recently
acquired leaves.

The manuscript is presented in the DjVu format which provides high
quality, magnifiable images compressed into relatively small files for
easy downloading. In order to view DjVu images it is necessary to
download and install (once) a special free viewer program.

The Rothschild Haggadah can be accessed at:

To all JAP members, users and friends
We again have updated the
newbooks section which presents
both new and well-known authors plus reprinted works of value to
Torah scholarship. Many of these Seforim are not sold in regular stores.

Our Seforim catalog is the only one on the web that combines: careful
selection, library-style full bibliographic information, 4 pictures
from each Sefer, plus online availability. The investment of time to
select, prepare and edit this information is substantial. The
benefits for readers, authors and Torah study we believe are great.
Unfortunately the returns from sales are miniscule.
As many of you may or may not have realized VirtualGeula is a labour
of love(Ahavat Sefer) and frequently costs more to run than it earns.
This is all the more the true in these difficult times when people
cut back on Seforim purchases. When we started in 1986 as as the
Judaica Archival Project we hoped that many of our services could be
for free. While in past generations most Seforim were often subvented
by supporters, in our generation it is apparent that fund-raising for
Seforim is a very very difficult venture. Today as a non-profit
information and access project, supported by book sales and
bibliographic services alone we struggle from month to month to cover
costs, and despite the above VirtualGeula is in it's 13th year and
has helped thousands of users to find Seforim they need !
Therefore we are asking if you are in the position to help sponsor
the Newbooks section please contact us by email. We hope to upgrade
and post all the books we have cataloged with pics and not just as an
Excel file. If you are not, please take a moment and consider buying,
renewing or upgrading your JAP subscription or membership as a small
way to keep this service running. We have also initiated a new
membership program (without book searches) for only 50 shekels for a
half-year = 8 shekels or $2.00 a month.
No matter what we always appreciate your feedback and recommendations.

[ha-Safran]: Only in Israel....Educational Sugar Packets

2009-03-26 Thread Jacob Richman
Hi Everyone!

Two days ago I had dinner with a friend in a restaurant on Emek Refaim
street in Jerusalem. While we were waiting for our meals, my friend told
me to look at the sugar packets on the table. I picked two of them up and
looked at them. One had a picture of Theodor Herzl on it and the other
had a picture of Ze'ev Jabotinsky. The backs had a brief biography of
these modern Israeli historical individuals.

I decided to scan these unique sugar packets and put the pictures on
my website at:

http://www.jr.co.il/pictures/israel/things/educational-sugar-packets.htm

After 24 years in Israel, I am still amazed at the nice little surprises
that one finds in the least expected places.

Chodesh Tov,
Shabbat Shalom,
Jacob
