[ha-Safran]: Librarian's Lobby for May 2009

2009-06-08 Thread Daniel Stuhlman
Hello Everyone,

Last month's column was on Hebrew-Yiddish name pairs. This month is
a statistical report on the frequency of Hebrew names in one
particular congregation.

http://home.earthlink.net/~ddstuhlman/crc106.pdf

Also visit my blog. The last entry is a humorous article "Untitled
Art Works." I poke fun at an article who did not not his works. It
is meant to inform and amuse. Please check it out.

Three positions on the Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee will be
available beginning January 1, 2010.

Applicants should be members of AJL, familiar with the scope of
Judaic children's literature, experienced in writing critical
reviews, willing and able to read and review over 120 books during
the course of a year, and able to meet deadlines.

Committee members are expected to attend annual conventions and to
participate in committee-sponsored events, including speaking at the
Committee's annual presentation. The term of membership on the
Committee is four years. Each committee member typically receives
more than $2,000 in books for review each year, which may be kept for
personal use or added to the member's library. Membership on the
Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee is both fun and intellectually
challenging, but it also requires a substantial commitment in terms
of time and energy.

To apply, send a letter indicating the reasons for your interest, a
resume, and several examples of your recent reviews to Kathe
Pinchuck, Committee Chair, atkpinch...@gmail.com. Applications will
be accepted through August 31, 2009.

[ha-Safran]: Mentor Mingle AJLChicago2009 Please try to attend

2009-06-08 Thread AJL mentoring
Are you a seasoned librarian, library student, or newcomer to a
library position?

You'll find that the Mentor Mingle is a golden opportunity to meet
new friends, share ideas, and participate in the zeitgeist of the
times. This year we're inviting members to step forward and be
mentors to newcomers for the duration of the Convention. We'll pair
you with a new member if you haven't met one already on your own.
Stephanie (Sara Leah) Gross, Chair of AJL Mentoring, will be on hand
with a short presentation about the process, what it entails and some
of the benefits of the program. If you'd like to know more before
the event, you may contact her directly at:
ajlmentor...@gmail.com. However, reservations are notrequired.

Are you interested in a greater challenge? Why not consider guiding a
new professional throughout the coming year to establish contacts,
learn about available resources, and build a long-lasting
relationship? Full-year commitments are not mandatory.

Please note: This year we're hoping to establish mentoring leaders at
the local chapter or regional level in order to improve our
effectiveness. Your participation can make a great difference in
someone's career!

Looking forward to seeing you all there! Stephanie (Sara Leah)

There is also an English translation for each Hebrew tongue twister.

Feedback is welcome!

Enjoy!
