[ha-Safran]: Request a Yiddish Book

2009-08-10 Thread Esther Podoliak
REQUEST A FREE YIDDISH BOOK

In memory of Chaia Bierstone-Podoliak, family members self-published
a book called "The First Song," a selection of her poems and stories
in Yiddish -- about 100 pages. The purpose was to donate these books
to Yiddish library collections around the world that are open to the public.

If you know of such a collection in Canada, the U.S. or elsewhere in
the world, please ask those who are interested to request a copy of
the book from her.

The number of copies is limited, and the donor is therefore
interested in knowing:

· The approx. size/extent of the Yiddish collection

· The approximate size/extent of the Yiddish-speaking borrowing
audience.

· The address and location of the Yiddish collection.

· The name of the Yiddish collection and its sponsoring organization

· The name, position and e-mail address of the person making the request.

The donor will cover the cost of sending a book, and thanks you for your help.

The request, or any questions, should be in English and addressed to the donor:

Ms. Esther Podoliak

at http://www.cajs.upenn.edu/index.html. This past academic year
(2008-09), an impressive group of fellows researched the relatively
neglected field of Jewish economic history. In 2009–2010 the Katz
Center fellows will focus on secularism and in the following year
(2010–2011) the fellows will research the phenomenon of conversion to
and from Judaism.

[ha-Safran]: AJL wiki

2009-08-10 Thread Stephanie L Gross
Kudos to Diane and Joyce for their initiative with the AJL. This
will be excellent for those involved with mentoring. Why not start
with culling some of the pearls from the existing homepage, be it
FAQs, resources, etc.? The information is difficult to find, but yet
extremely valuable.

Again, thanks for your efforts!

[ha-Safran]: Redemption

2009-08-10 Thread Paula Sandfelder
Dear Friends,

My Book Club (of which I am the discussion leader) is reading "Not
Me" by Michael Lavigne. In the book there is the line "He did not
ask to be forgiven, nor did he seek punishment. He

sought redemption. This is probably the most important line in the book.

It is very easy to find a Christian view of REDEMPTION. It is more
difficult to understand the JEWISH definition of the same word.

Any ideas would be helpful.

Paula Sandfelder

[ha-Safran]: OT: Welcome Home to the New Olim (and 322 pictures)

2009-08-10 Thread Jacob Richman
Hi Everyone!

On Tuesday morning, August 4, 2009, I was at Ben-Gurion airport to
greet the new olim that made aliyah from North America to Israel.

There were 238 olim on the flight including 63 singles
(55 joining the IDF) and 36 families with 113 children.

The youngest oleh in the group is 3 months old and the
oldest oleh is 75 years old. The flight also included 4 dogs and
3 cats.

I took 322 pictures of the exciting event and I posted them online at:
http://www.jr.co.il/pictures/israel/history/2009/a466.htm

I also posted the 322 pictures on Facebook for name tagging.
There are two sets of pictures and they are both located in my
Facebook photo section at:
http://www.facebook.com/jacobrichman?v=photos

If you have a Facebook acccount and you are in the pictures or
see someone you know, please feel free to name tag the pictures.

May the aliyah from all over of the world grow and bring
more Jews back to their homeland, Eretz Yisrael.

Enjoy the pictures and have a good day,
Jacob

Re: [ha-Safran]: Advance uncorrected proof

2009-08-10 Thread Yakov Shafranovich
A small correction:

IANAL but unless there is a signed written contract in place between
the publisher and the person reviewing the advance copy, there are no
legal issues with reselling or transferring the ARC. In the US, the
doctrine of "first sale", allows people to do whatever they went with
physical copies of books including advance review copies which are
considered gifts. See:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First-sale_doctrine

In a related case, a music company lost their bid to restrict
distribution of promotional CDs. The analogy to review copies of books
is self evident:

http://www.fepproject.org/commentaries/promoCDs.html

With this said, if there is a legal problem with the content of the
book itself such as slander, libel, etc. it is something different. In
the US it is very hard to prove slander and libel, and furthermore
printers, publishers and libraries might not even be liable. See:

http://blog.ericgoldman.org/archives/2008/07/printondemand_p.htm

Furthermore, many large companies such as Amazon, eBay, etc. might
prohibit resale of ARCs but not for legal reasons. Rather, it is
something they were pressured to do by publishers and the AuthorGuild.
It should not be taken as indication of legal problems. I remember a
rather lively discussion about this in one of the publishing groups on
Yahoo groups about a year ago.

NOTE: IANAL, and all legal issues require proper legal counsel.

Yakov

Re: [ha-Safran]: Advance uncorrected proof

2009-08-10 Thread Marie
In my library I have a policy of not adding ARCs/galleys to the
collection for the following reasons:
* ARCs and galleys are promotional tools that are not meant to be
a substitute for buying the book; they're not meant to be donations
to libraries. They're meant to be tools that help librarians decide
what to buy and help them get an "early word" on what's new and
interesting, so that they can share their knowledge with their
patrons. Substituting ARCs for finished copies, in my opinion,
violates the spirit in which they're provided and deprives the author
and publisher of payment for their work.
* ARCs and galleys are UNFINISHED copies. Particularly in the
case of nonfiction, there may be things missing from the galley/ARC
that would be helpful to the reader- charts, maps, illustrations,
indices, etc. There may be inaccurate facts that stlll need to be
verified or changed before the final edition. There may be, as Steven
noted, plot twists in fiction that aren't meant for public
consumption; James Patterson is another author famous for changing
the ending from the ARC to the final copy, so that the "true" ending
can't be leaked in an early review.
* Have you heard the stereotype about bridesmaids' dresses, that
they are made for one bride's special day and aren't made to last
multiple wearings? ARCs and galleys are the bridesmaids dresses of
the book world. They are cheaply bound paperbacks not manufactured to
withstand multiple readings and the kind of rough handling library
books put up with. Providing ARCs to patrons is, in my opinion, not
providing the highest quality materials or holding the library to the
highest standards.
I certainly understand the temptation to include ARCs and galleys in
collections; I am a fairly active book blogger and reviewer and
stacks of Jewish-interest galleys have passed through my hands. In
every case, when I thought a book merited inclusion in my library I
bought the book out of the library budget. ARCs and galleys I pass
along to other librarians or readers, or just keep for my personal collection.

All of which is not to say they have no use in the library. You could
use them for giveaways or prizes in trivia contests or as extras for
a book club. I started a small shelf in the temple where I work,
where I leave unwanted galleys, Jewish-interest or not, for staff to
peruse and take home. It's a fairly popular initiative because people
always love free books.
