2009-10-17 Thread Barbara Mende
Yes, I've noticed that; I think it's true in adult literature too
these days (e.g., Sarah's Key). I imagine people think that if they
make the Holocaust more mainstream, it'll appeal to more
non-Jews. Nice thought but. . . .

How can something written at the time the events occurred be
old-fashioned? Do they want the forties to come off like this
century? Old-fashioned? What can be more real and authentic?

I like the Book Thief and perhaps it's gentler because it deals
mainly with survival, but is gentle what we want here? Agree that
despite its young teen heroine and its appearance on young adult book
lists, it's not a young adult book.

RE: [ha-Safran]: Holocaust Books for children

2009-10-17 Thread Emily Bergman
I'm pretty appalled by this. As much as I loved reading The Book Thief,
for example, this is not a book to introduce the Holocaust to students.
It's a very complicated concept to feel sympathy for the Germans while
knowing what was going on. I think the analogy to Gone with the Wind is
apt. I don't understand why Diary of a Young Girl would no longer be
interesting, especially with the understanding that it recounts the real
experiences of a girl living through the experience. I think that if
students only read one book, it's better to read a real story rather
than fiction. Finally, people all over the world read Anne Frank; why
shouldn't our students. For example, when I have had Japanese exchange
students living with us, they had all read Diary of a Young Girl. I
think American students would be missing a piece of a literary canon if
they don't read it.

How this movie and book has swept the nation is beyond me. I agree with
Emily and wonder how anyone could think it is a "good" account of what
happened. It is so unrealistic and bizarre and I think it gives people
a very skewed vision of what it was like during that time.

I wish there was something we can do to open people's eyes to this
ridiculous view of a fictitious and impossible adventure.

However, I would like to be convinced otherwise, so if anyone has some
ideas of how this book can enhance one's view of the Holocaust, please
share.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Reading programs/accelerated reader

2009-10-17 Thread books2gogh
I'm in public schools these days and Accelerated Reader is a major
player in our school for promoting reading and evaluating student
performance. Renaissance Learning now has an online version and more
and more schools will be using the online version as we will very
shortly. All the tests will be available; schools will not longer
have to buy individual tests. If your students use AR in their
schools and are online, labeling the books would be a great way to
promote Judaic reading. Instead of or in addition to the label, you
may want to have a link to the quiz store to see which books have a
quiz available and point value. Our school uses Destiny and the link
is on our home page. Students also want to know how many points each
book is worth so be sure to include that information as well inside
the book. Here is the link: http://www.renlearn.com/store/quiz_home.asp

Re: [ha-Safran]: Reading programs/accelerated reader

2009-10-17 Thread KPeter3434
Hi Andrea,
You're absolutely right about schools not having quizzes. Before I
embarked on this, I checked with the librarian at my local
elementary school, who
checked with the other librarians in the school district. Apparently most
schools no longer purchase individual quizzes, but pay a fee for computer
access to all the quizzes the A.R. company has and merely access them via
computer. So, even if a child's school library doesn't have a book that's
in our synagogue library, as long as it's an A.R. book and there's a quiz,
they should be able to access the quiz from their elementary school's
library.

[ha-Safran]: Another important history volume

2009-10-17 Thread Fredisaac
All --

This is a wonderful year for local Jewish History.

Yesterday, I picked up Fred Rosenbaum's "Cosmopolitans", a history of
the Jewish community of San Francisco and the Bay Area. Published by
the University of California Press. It has just been released. The
price is $40.

Obviously, I haven't read it yet. But the Introduction indicates
that the book covers the century from the Gold Rush to the foundation
of Israel, and should be considered by all libraries.

Fred is the founder of Lehrhaus, the Bay Area's Adult Education
provider. His previous volumes include the history of Temple
Emanu-El in San Francisco (the expanded edition was published a few
years ago), and a (now out-of-print) history of the East Bay Jewish
community, published in 1976. (I have updated that story into 2009
in my volume for Arcadia, which was released in July).

This follows the excellent volume on Temple Israel of Boston,
released by Brandeis UP .

I'm looking forward to reading the book, obviously. but I wanted to
inform those who are interested that it's now available.
