In June 2007, the Bill Melinda Gates Foundation awarded PLA a $7.7 million grant to develop and provide a national advocacy training program. The program, Turning the Page: Building Your Library Community, equips librarians and library supporters with the skills, confidence and resources they need to create community partnerships, build alliances with local and regional decision makers and ultimately increase funding for their libraries. This advocacy education, originally designed for public libraries participating in the Gates Foundation Opportunity Online hardware grants program, has benefited more than 3,500 librarians and library supporters across 32 states. Following training, the vast majority of participants were better advocates for their libraries, feeling more confident in their abilities and more excited about advocacy. As a result, more than 98 percent of participating libraries achieved their funding goals. Through the generosity of the Bill Melinda Gates Foundation, PLA is now able to offer this training to all ALA members. Turning the Page online is composed of dynamic slides and interactive exercises, culminating in the completion of a 10-part Advocacy Work Plan. It typically takes four-five hours to complete, but can be stopped and resumed as needed. From library directors to trustees Turning the Page online is appropriate for anyone interested in making a difference for your library. Access the program here : http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/pla/plaadvocacy/turningthepage/index.cfm. Members who do register for the course are encouraged to send feedback either to me directly or preferably to this listserv. Best of luck!!! I see library advocacy as a major issue upon which we must all focus in the near future. [ha-Safran]: After the Convention: Home again.
The Seattle convention was mega-cool. I want to thank, again and again and again, theLittauer Foundation for the travel grant and all of the AJL members for the subsidy without either of which I could not have attended the convention. I really really really liked everything especially putting names to faces like Enid and Nancy and Heidi and the wonderful conversations that were to be had at all hours of the day. The Nature tour and the nature library were stupendous. Happily and most fortunately, Sinagoga La Javura and I became members of the AJL of Southern California chapter, so now the chapter might want to call itself unofficially the AJLSC International chapter (je je je). Just thinking out loud, here, but as a possible consideration AJL might in some star-trekky future-time play with the idea (...with a pinch or pound of salt...) of a floating convention where we could hold all of the sessions in the different towns along a part of the the Intracoastal Waterway of the eastern seaboard (e.g., Washington DC and the Dismal Swamp Canal, etc...). If a bunch of Paddleboat high rollers on the Columbia River can do it, there's no reason why a gallant band of librarians can't do the same (gambol, not gamble). The sleeping accomodations could be the cruise boat(s) or little hotels along the waterway. Librarian spouses could enjoy fishing and or casual boating. I can dream. [ha-Safran]: New book
Dear Safranim, I want to present you a new book on a Cultural and Humanistic perspective of Judaism: Bernardo Sorj, Judaism for Everyone ... without Dogma (2010), presents an exceptional and stimulating view of Judaism. The author argues for a Judaism oriented by humanistic values and personal freedom. Individuals that value their capacity to decide what is right and wrong cannot accept ready-made formulas. For them, the question is not what Judaism is but rather how to find their own way to be a Jew. Tradition and collective memory are raw materials that each generation must reinterpret and in which new meanings are found. Judaism for Everyone ... without Dogma is an effort to contribute to the advancement of Judaism that is based on freedom not on fear or blind acceptance of authority. Bernardo Sorj has a degree in Jewish history from the University of Haifa and a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Manchester. He is currently the director of the EdelsteinCenter for Social Research and a professor of sociology at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. He has authored 23 books, which have been published in English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese, and over 100 articles. In 2005, he was elected Man of Ideas in Brazil. [ha-Safran]: Possible Gifts to all AJL member libraries
My department is being extensively remodled and the collection needs to be downsized. I am responsible for the Jewish collection and I would like to gift any books possible rather than trash them. We can send a few of the books without a charge for shipping. Otherwise the books would be gifts but there would need to be a shipping charge. The books are in good condition. They were not circulated more than 1 or 2 times in fact most of them have never circulated. A list of the books showing author, title, date of publication, and notation about the book when needed, follows. Anyone wishing to receive any of these books can contact me at jbr...@detroitpubliclibrary.org. I can also be reached at 313- 481-1406 or 1404. We are located at 5201 Woodward Avenue in Detroit, Michigan. I can arrange for anyone, who can come to our Library, to pick up any number of books with no charge. FAMILY TRAVELOGUE + SOVIET FOUND FOOTAGE The personal and the historical mix beautifully in what is part travelogue and part a journey to relatives, relationships and a decent gulp of Vodka. NIKITA KINO Doc, 40 min A film by Vivian Ostrovsky Dear Librarians/Professors, We are happy to let you know about a remarkable film that is part personal recollections and part historical recording. This film is a must for Soviet studies! Filmmaker Vivian Ostrovsky traveled with her family from Brazil to the Soviet Union in the 1970's. Her father, originally from Russia, brought them there to visit his family and to tour around places of his past. NIKITA KINO is made up entirely of family footage shot in and around Moscow mixed with found archival footage from the Soviet Union of the time. The story that the film tells is both private in its intimate details and sweeping in the history it presents. The idea of identity and history is played with and looked at with a sense of thrill and the utmost seriousness at the same time. We would be glad for NIKITA KINO to be included in your library collection. If you are planning programming having to do with Russia and the Soviet Union NIKITA KINO is a must have. We would be happy to send you a DVD for preview of this special film. The purchase price for university libraries is $300 plus shipping and handling and $115 plus shipping and handling for public libraries. [ha-Safran]: Recent Scholarship Fund donations
AJL awards two scholarships each year to students at recognized programs of Library and Information Science who demonstrate interest in pursuing careers in Judaica librarianship. This year's winners were Haim Gottschalk and Rachel Isaac-Menard. The Scholarships are supported by donations to AJL's Scholarship Fund. Donations have been down lately, I'm sure due to the economic turndown, but we still need and welcome your support. A donation to the fund is a fitting way to honor someone for a special occasion such as a birthday, graduation, anniversary, new job, birth, marriage, election to an office, award or just to say hello. It is also a meaningful memorial. I send a card to the recipient whom you name (as long as you give me the name, reason and address). Donations may be sent to me, Sarah Barnard, at Hebrew Union College Klau Library, 3101 Clifton Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45220. Here is a list of some recent donations to the fund: From Pearl Berger in memory of David Gilner's mother Anita Gilner. From Ellen Kovacic in memory of Yaffa Weisman's father. From Sarah Barnard in memory of Yaffa Weisman's father. From Roberta Berman in loving memory of Nomi Levy. From the San Diego/Tijuana chapter of AJL in loving memory of Nomi Levy.
