[ha-Safran]: Librarything

2010-09-21 Thread Gail and George Glanzberg
We are a small synagogue library with 1000 books and growing. We are
presently using Librarything, but many of the books do not come
through with subjects. Are others having this problem? Does anyone
have a suggestion for a better program?

With thanks

[ha-Safran]: A Note from the AJL President

2010-09-21 Thread James Rosenbloom
Hello. I last sent a note on Hasafran to AJL members soon after our
Seattle convention. One would expect that the summer would have been
a quiet time for our organization. On the contrary -- The Board and
Council have been actively discussing a number of important issues of
great interest to our members. I would like to fill you in on our
recent activities.

We, like other nonprofit organizations, are reviewing our budget and
finances very carefully. We want to make sure that our financial
resources will continue to support our activities for many years to
come. We must make sure that our income equals or exceeds our
expenses. We are currently reviewing all of our expenses to see
where we can save money.

Our largest non-convention related expense is the printing and
mailing of the AJL Newsletter and Judaica Librarianship. Our
Newsletter editor Uri Kolodney and his newsletter staff, along with
the Council, have been investigating ways to save money. At this
point, our focus is on a switch to electronic publication. This has
a lot of advantages, such as long term electronic access to this
publication. There are a lot of technical and other concerns about
this, and all these questions are now under discussion or study by
Council members. I believe that a decision about whether to switch
to electronic publication of the newsletter is likely to be made
within a month. The Council will be discussing other cost cutting
actions in the coming months. Among the items to be evaluated is
switching Judaica Librarianship to electronic format only.

The largest cost for AJL is the annual convention. As we make
decisions about food and other matters for the Montreal convention,
we will be looking for ways to trim costs. It is too early at this
point to have anything concrete to report to you.

Let's look at the other side of the equation -- income. Most of our
regular income comes from dues. Unlike many organizations, we have
kept dues at a low rate for many years. We are currently evaluating
our dues structure in light of the wide variety of our members, from
part time volunteer librarians, to full time librarians, to
institutions. We want to come up with a dues structure that will not
burden those with limited incomes, but that will increase our income
and bring in needed dollars. The discussions on this are still in a
very early stage, and I will update you on this in the future.

The second source of income comes from what we charge for the
conventions, along with revenue from advertisements and vendors, and
from donations by non-AJL individuals, organizations and
companies. We need to make sure that our convention income covers
our expenses.

In addition to cutting expenses and increasing regular income, we
also intend to actively pursue increased fund raising. This is in
the early discussion stage, and more information will follow in the future.

I've gone on at some length about the finances, because it is very
important that we guarantee the future means to meet all of our
ambitious goals. Among these goals are: outreach to others
interested in Judaica librarianship; increasing the awareness in the
general Jewish professional, clerical and educational community of
the importance of Judaica librarians and libraries; successful annual
conventions; outreach to the majority of our membership who do not
attend conventions, via the funding of regional and other activities;
ongoing communication on developments in general and Jewish
librarianship, via the Newsletter, web site, blog, and other ways
that we can not yet even imagine.

The company that we hired to revise our web site is currently
actively working on this project. Council members are working on
many issues associated with this, such as online payment
capabilities, layout and design, and revised language. Other current
projects include rewriting of the public relations material that we
need to have available for potential and new members, for
presentations about AJL at other organizations' conventions, and for
potential donors. These ongoing projects will continue throughout the year.

I hope that you are all enjoying this holiday season and the start of
the new school year.

Jim Rosenbloom

Re: [ha-Safran]: AJLN Index

2010-09-21 Thread Sara Rofofsky Marcus
Unfortunately some family and personal issues took over, but I am
back on track and am working on it again. The materials are
generally filled with all the information, but there are times I'm
having to look for missing bibliographic information; and the sheer
number of reviews per issue is overwhelming. I have copies of all
issues in my ownership right now, and I am entering the data. Then I
need to check for duplicates because I've entered some twice, and
then do some proofreading.

Sara

[ha-Safran]: Two new films about Jewish Diversity

2010-09-21 Thread Ruth Diskin
JEWS CAN BE FROM ALL OVER

Two New Films from

Ruth Diskin Films illuminate the diversity

of the Jewish experience

Dear Librarians/professors,

When considering your purchases for the coming year, please consider
two wonderful new films that depict the richness of Jewish life. In
both JUBANOS-THE JEWS OF CUBA and NEW HOMES we learn about two unique
Jewish communities.

In NEW HOMES http://www.ruthfilms.com/new-homes.html , we are
introduced to a lovely and strangely-familiar Jewish community
outside of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The film lovingly tells the history of
Nilopolis which serves as a window into many contemporary Jewish
towns and their experiences.

One of the oldest and least known Jewish communities in the New World
is explored in JUBANOS-THE JEWS OF CUBA
http://www.ruthfilms.com/jubanos-the-jews-of-cuba.html. Although Cuba
is not known for its religious practice, 1500 Jews remain in the
country and are working hard to allow for continuity.

Both films would be wonderful additions to your library collection.
The purchase price foruniversity libraries is $300 each and $115 for
public libraries – with a 10% discount on the purchase of both titles.

With any questions or queries please contact us at r...@ruthfilms.com

Best regards,

Ruth

OCLC / WorldCat participation is pretty expensive, and is not an
option for smaller institutions, although WorldCat does has a Gateway
option which is free for importing online resources.
