[ha-safran: Dani Brown Author Appearance & Read-A-Likes

2010-10-11 Thread Rachel Kamin
Our Sisterhood's Welcome Brunch featured Danit Brown, author of Ask
for a Convertible, a wonderful collection of connected short stories
that centers on a thirteen-year-old girl who moves with her family
from Tel Aviv to Michigan. Danit gave a delightful and insightful
presentation which everyone enjoyed. For more information about her,
and to contact her for an author appearance, visit her website at
www.DanitBrown.com. She lives in Ann
Arbor, Michigan.

Our book club will be discussing Ask for a Convertible and I am
compiling a "read-a-like" bibliography. I am looking for suggestions
of other novel, short stories, or memoirs that feature Israelis who
have immigrated to America. Books about Americans making aliyah to
Israel would also be helpful.

Thank you!

RE: [ha-Safran]: Cookbook result

2010-10-11 Thread Deborah Stern
Another excellent title is Arthur Schwartz's Jewish Home Cooking. It is
extensively and beautifully illustrated and gives lots of background
information on the foods it describes, with emphasis on Eastern European
dishes. I was fascinated and became very nostalgic, hungry, and
motivated to cook as I read through the recipes from cover to cover.

[ha-Safran]: "The Name and the Number"

2010-10-11 Thread Shirazi, Gail
PROGRAM AT LC BY ARGENTINIAN ARTIST-MIRTA KUPFERMINC -THE NAME AND THE NUMBER

EUROPEAN DIVISION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS PRESENTS

What: "THE NAME AND THE NUMBER"
Lecture and video presentation by Mirta Kupferminc

When: TUESDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2010 at NOON

Where: European Division Conference Room
  Jefferson Building, Library of Congress

Argentinean artist, Mirta Kupferminc, has exhibited in more than 50
individual shows around the world. Much of her work explores the link
between the culture of European immigrants and their newly found home
in the Americas. Her award- winning artistic video, "The Name and
the Number," establishes a relationship between embroidery and
tattooing; both received simultaneously as a cultural heritage from
her Hungarian mother. She was raised embraced by the numbered arms of
both parents-Auschwitz survivors. Through her work she raises the
question of identity and heritage. Her work is both a testimony of
pain and a celebration of life.

Our thanks to the Embassy of Hungary for their cooperation

[ha-Safran]: Reposting

2010-10-11 Thread Bob Schrier
Here are the responses to a request I sent out a few weeks back,
reposted in case anyone is interested.

Bob,

Since my retirement I did not follow up on the plans of Tora Aura to
put on line their "The whole school curriculum". Personally I had
some reservations about their publications, but teachers loved it.

Jerusalem Post publishes a magazine for teens: D"Ash. It has lots
of Hebrew vocabulary and learning in it. It's very commercial, a
teen pop magazine, not appropriate in an Orthodox setting but
otherwise might be appropriate for older middle school and high
school. You can check it out on their website.

[ha-Safran]: Torah Anthology

2010-10-11 Thread Jeff Corbett
Does anyone have a source to purchase the complete 45 volume "Tanach
set" of Torah Anthology (Me'am Loez) translated into English by Rabbi
Aryeah Kaplan?

A non-profit Jewish learning organization was inquiring and I offered
to post their request to the list.

They would be willing to purchase the set new or used.

Thanks,

[ha-Safran]: Blog entry -- New Rules for Communications

2010-10-11 Thread Daniel Stuhlman
On Wednesday I thought that I would take a break from writing blog
articles about communications and marketing, however on Thursday
morning at my local supermarket. This supermarket has a huge kosher
section -- two full aisles of grocery and frozen foods, a kosher
deli, kosher fish department, and a kosher bakery.I got new ideas
for a 12th article. I learned about appreciation at the re-opening
of the store after a major remodeling job.
