[ha-Safran]: re: By Fire, By Water by Mitchell James Kaplan

2011-03-20 Thread Eileen Polk
Dear Safranim,

I just want to spread the word that we had a wonderful event
featuring Mitchell James Kaplan, author of By Fire, By Water speaking
at Temple Beth El Saturday evening, March 19. The book is a
fascinating and enjoyable historical novel about the converso, Luis
de Santangel, who was an advisor to Isabel and Ferdinand and
financier of Columbus's initial voyages to the new world. Mitchell
is a skilled and charming speaker and the background about how he
came to write this novel could be a novel in itself.

If you are looking for an interesting author event, I highly
recommend inviting him to speak.

[ha-Safran]: Children's book reviewed in WSJ

2011-03-20 Thread Andrea Rapp
Under the heading "A Tale for Children of Braving Soviet Tyranny,"
Meghan Cox Gudron praises a new YA novel about the horrors of life
under the Soviets. The book, "Between Shades of Gray," is about a
15-year old Lithuanian girl whose family is rounded up and deported
to the East in cattle cars. It sounds like a story of Jews, but Lina
is identified only as Lithuanian.
The reviewer mentions the memoir on a similar theme, Hautzig's
Endless Steppe. Here, too, the family is identified only as
"Polish." [sic]. Last year's "Under a Red Sky" gets passing mention,
but only as a story of Romania, no mention of Jewish component.
What's going on here?
Is "Between Shades of Gray" about a Jewish family?

[ha-Safran]: A Purim plea for silent auction goodies

2011-03-20 Thread Nancy Sack
Shaloha, AJLers!

We have already received a number of fabulous donations to our first
ever AJL Convention silent auction. For those of you who have been
wavering, or wondering what to donate, here are some suggestions:

  books
  CDs and DVDs
  software
  Judaica
  gift cards
  subscriptions
arts and crafts (show off and give away your original
paintings, drawings, photographs, textiles [hint to SS], etc.)
library paraphernalia (T-shirts, mugs, posters, etc.)
  other good stuff
baskets of regional and local specialties
IOUs for drinks at the bar

Your donations to the AJL silent auction help raise funds for two
good causes. Proceeds from the auction will be divided between the
Auberge Shalom pour femmes (the Jewish women's shelter in Montreal;
http://www.aubergeshalom.org/ ) and the AJL convention stipend fund.
It's a double mitzvah!

But now, there's another great reason to donate to the auction...

For a limited time, convention attendees who donate items to the
silent auction will receive a lovely Hawaiian puka shell lei,
absolutely free! Puka shell lei make much nicer badge holders than
simple lanyards or cords. If you sport a puka shell lei at the
convention, you will be the envy of all your friends. These lei are
not available in stores (on the mainland).

But wait, there's more! If you donate now, you will receive a second
puka shell lei! That's a US $0.98 value. And your lei are yours to
keep, even if you leave the convention early!

And for those of you who can't attend the convention...

Please remember that we are offering an exclusive silent auction
shlepper service (SASS), so you can avoid international shipping.
Shleppers are standing by. Please contact me (808-956-2648;
s...@hawaii.edu) to arrange to send your donation to a shlepper near you.

Hag Purim sameah!

[ha-Safran]: Are Jewish writers 10% of "It Gets Better"?

2011-03-20 Thread MyJewishBooks
new update

Dear Safranim
Purim is here (and by the time this posts... has passed).. the Full
Moon is waning, and March 22 approaches. It is the release date for
IT GETS BETTER by Dan Savage and his husband, Terry Miller
(Dutton/Penguin, March 22, 2011)

I would say that 10% of the essay in this book are by Jewish
writers. Impressive. No?

I think the book will be of special interest to Jewish librarians and
their patrons

You are acutely aware of the pain and bullying and confusion among
gay, lesbian, different and perceived to be different teens in your
communities. Maybe you have directed students and families and
parents to those YouTube videos that are part of the Trevor Project
and It Gets Better. Now, a collection of them have been compiled
into this book of transcribed essays and original writings

Readings are scheduled in
NYC on March 22
Chicago on March 23
Los Angeles / West Hollywood on March 24
San Francisco on March 29
as well as Seattle

IT GETS BETTER. Coming Out, Overcoming Bullying, and Creating a Life
Worth Living
Edited by Dan Savage and Terry Miller
March 22, 2011, Dutton Penguin
When they started the video project, they expected 100 to be
uploaded. There are now over 10,000.

They uploaded their first video on September 22, 2010
Within 24 hours, someone uploaded a second video
In three days, there were several hundred videos
At the end of the week, there were 1,000 uploaded videos
Within four weeks the White House called: President Obama has a video to submit

Dan Savage's publisher and editor, Penguin and Dutton, decided to
turn a selection of transcribed videos and other expanded essays,
about 110 in all, with additional resource information, into a book.

Of the 110+ essays, I noticed the Jewish names. (hehe... sorry to be
parochial)

The book features contributions by President Barack Obama, David
Sedaris, Kate Clinton, Murray Hill, Bishop Gene Robinson, Ellen
Degeneres, Tim Gunn, UK PM David Cameron, financial advisor Suze
Orman, Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, Chaz Bono, Bruce Ortiz, PereZ
Hilton, Alex Orue and many more.

= = = = = = = =

There are also several Jews who were selected to include essays.

They include Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum, the senior rabbi at Congregation
CBST in Manhattan;

Jules Skloot, the Brooklyn based dancer and choreographer, graduate
of Hampshire and Sarah Lawrence, and member of Jews with Tattoos;

Dr. David Rosen in Ottawa, who writes with his partner, Sean B Lane;

Six gay Orthodox Jewish young men have a group essay in which they
discuss life growing up in Orthodox and Haredi and Hasidic homes and
Jewish summer camps, their survival in these institutions, and their
current, much more happy and productive lives. They have links to their
website for gay Orthodox youth

Barbara Gaines, 53, the Executive Producer of the Late Show with
David Letterman writes of growing up on Long Island, playing clarinet
in the school band, and attempting suicide after college. But if she
had died in 1979, she would have missed out on the rest of a fabulous
life, her partner, their 4 year old, and her life at the
CBST synagogue.

Adam Roberts, a Jewish graduate of Emory and star of the Food Network
and the Amateur gourmet flogger (food blogger) site writes a
hilarious essay on cooking a Friday night meal for his parents, his
partner, and his partner's parents. In between recipes and
tangential asides on food, he discusses being bullied in school, and
finding how to express himself in a comedy troupe in college. As he
says, high school is like a cold depressing tv dinner, but it gets
better and you might end up as a plated dish of braised (braised!!)
shirt ribs with polenta (*not kosher)

There is also essays by Michael Feinstein, a piano player (hehe)
Others include:

Suze Orman, 60, a financial advisor and proud lesbian who says life
is "NOT EASY, but it is all worth the struggle!" (she is very
demonstrative on video and in print)

Andy Cohen, Executive Vice President of Bravo, the cable channel, and
head of original programming who writes of growing up in St Louis and
wondering if he would be Charles Nelson Reilly and Paul Lynde;
finding himself during a year abroad at college; and being himself
for the rest of his life.

Jessica Leshnoff writes about growing up and thinking she was a bad
person and a bad Jew, a spiral of self-loathing, that she overcame.

Jake Kleinman, who is finishing Med school at Tulane, and will enter
a Pediatrician residency program in New Orleans writes about moving
from being scared to being proud.

Sara Sperling (yes, she is Jewish too) write on life as a sorority sister,

and the book closes with an essay by Kate Bornstein.

= = = = = = =

I hope you find it as interesting a read for yourself and your
library patrons, as much as I did.

IVORY FROM PARADISE
By David Schmahmann

From John Gardner Fiction Award Winner, David Schmahmann comes a
return to South Africa in his new novel IVORY FROM PARADISE (Academy
Chicago, February 22, $24.95). A story of betrayal, family lies, and
the changing nature of history.

Helga Divin, the matriarch of a prominent Jewish family from Durban
in Kwa Zulu-Natal, South Africa, lies dying in the splendid London
mansion of her second husband, the unscrupulous industrialist Arnold Miro.

Her children, Danny and Bridget, both well established in Boston,
rush to her side where they quickly realize that Arnold, in addition
to mistreating their mother, has begun to claim as his own a
priceless collection of African artifacts that their father spent a
lifetime assembling and chronicling.

The collection's most important pieces are a pair of majestic ivory
tusks that were once owned by King Shaka, founder of the Zulu nation
and a major symbolic figure in modern South Africa. Their father's
account of the origins and provenance of the tusks -- how, after a
long and complicated journey, they finally had come into his
possession -- was a story often told and long accepted.

As Danny and Bridget move to thwart what they see as an unforgivable
theft of their family heirlooms, they find themselves instead having
to face the truth about their father's stories, the true ownership of
this unique collection of Africana, and long held beliefs about their
own past and their country's history.

After many years away, the two return home to Durban to finish what
they started in London. Amid the turbulence of the "new" South
Africa, and against the backdrop of dramatic changes in the lives of
old family friends' and former domestic servants, Danny and Bridget
come face-to-face with the reality that much of what they always
thought to be true is instead as fragile and as suspect as the story
of King Shaka and his ivory tusks.

Praise for David Schmahmann's EMPIRE SETTINGS:

"Unexpected, even unforgettable[an] artful battle against
cultural and historical amnesia."
- Washington Post

"Thoughtful, affecting and skillfully constructedSchmahmann's
portrayal of South Africa, past and present, is as poignant - and
nuanced - as his delineation of the characters and their relationships."
- Los Angeles Times

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

David Schmahmann was for many years a senior partner in the Boston
law firm founded by Louis Brandeis, but he was born and raised in
South Africa where his family had a long and successful history. One
of his ancestors fought on the side of the Boers during the Anglo
Boer War, and his grandfather, who owned a store and hotel in
Middleburg, Transvaal, was deputy mayor there after the first World
War. His father, a doctor, sixty years ago established a
groundbreaking medical clinic for outpatient surgical procedures that
still exists, and his mother, who taught politics at the University
of Natal, was a founding member of the Progressive Party, on its
National Executive, and twice ran for parliament. She was also very
active in Jewish communal affairs, served as editor-in-chief of
Hashalom, Durban's Jewish periodical, and was widely respected for
her political activities and principled positions.

Schmahmann himself attended Durban's Jewish Day School and on
graduation was drafted into the South African army where he was made
an infantryman and posted to the South African Mozambique border. His
military service was complicated by his being labeled a "security
risk," presumably because of his mother's reputation, and he was
banned from his unit's headquarters building and removed from
participation in a Republican Day parade.

Ultimately the inevitable friction that came from functioning

[ha-Safran]: Jewish liturgical responses to the Japan catastrophe

2011-03-20 Thread Yael Levine
I am collating material concerning Jewish liturgical responses to the
Japan catastrophe. I am following the topic on the internet, and have
already several prayers.

I'd be interested in hearing accounts either of adapting existing
tefillot or of reciting any of these new tefillot in one's shul or
congregation; last Shabbat or this coming Shabbat.

I'd like to mention that I came out with a similar call following the
Haiti earthquake.

There is a nice amount of material. I didn't get to publish it upon
the first anniversary, but I now hope to combine both topics.
Sincerely,
Yael Levine

[ha-Safran]: Automation systems

2011-03-20 Thread Basya Karp
This is a tall order.

Because of the uncertainties surrounding Shulamith, we did not take
advantage of the automation opportunity offered by AJL several years
ago. Now, however, with a new administration, there is a chance,
even though it might be small, that we may be able to automate. I
need input as to what automation programs you recommend that are the
most economical and yet will serve the needs of a school with 2
libraries (elementary/middle school and high school), each with
approximately 10,000 volumes. The computer teacher/tech person asked
me to email her a list asap. I know a number of companies, but I'd
like feedback on ones with which you have the most success.

Thanks, and have a great Shabbos and a very happy Purim!

[ha-Safran]: Jerusalem Books ltd Newsletter Spring 2011 -c-

2011-03-20 Thread Jerusalem Books
Dear Friends,

In the area of Israel & Zionism and Hebrew Literature, Stef
Wertheimer has authored his autobiography entitled, 'Ish le-yad
mekhona.' A Man Beside a Machine, may be an accurate and humble
description of the author but this book deserves significant
attention despite its humble title. This book which chronicles the
life of one of Israel's leading business figures from Germany to
Israel, is in many ways a paradigm for all the modern history of (the
people and state of) Israel. From (pre) holocaust refugees to youth
in the Palmach and building an army, a state and an economy, his
history is the history of Israel. His involvement with the infant IDF
and cottage industry weapons manufacturing and his progression,
including a stint as a member of Knesset (MK) for the Labor party to
status as titan of industry are documented and discussed. Naturally,
the building of ISCAR and its sale to Warren Buffet's Berkshire
Hathaway is covered. The philosophy, ideology and mindset which fuses
Capitalism. Socialism and Zionism and the obstacles faced and
overcome are examined. This book is a shining example of the
fulfillment of the prophecy of beating swords into plowshares and the
thoughts, challenges and insights which go into making it happen.
Published by Yediot, isbn 978-965-545-289-4.

Noted journalists Dan Margalit and Ronen Bergman have written,
'Ha-Bor,' 'the Pit,' about the recent struggles and scandals
surrounding the appointment of the 'Ramatkal' the Israeli Army Chief.
The book is important investigative journalism which sheds light on
the tensions between security, career and ambition in the
IDF. Published by Kinneret – Zmora Bitan, isbn 978-965-517-970-5.

Under Hebrew Literature and Israel and Zionism, Keter has published,
'Tsakhla ve-Yehezkel,' entitled(in English), 'Rachel and Ezekiel,' by
Almog Behar. This novel which depicts the lives of a young 'mizrahi'
couple, struggling personally, emotionally and economically in the
poor neighborhoods of Jerusalem. The book also explores the
historical, political and literary worlds of its protagonists. The
author employs references to Sephardi piyyut, liturgical poetry, to
explore the connection between Arab culture and Jewish – Israeli
life. He has even described these characters as "yehudim aravim,"
(Arab Jews). Isbn 978-965-07-1871-8.

In the realm of Rabbinics, we will skip several interesting and
important titles recently published by Mossad Harav Kook. (Please be

and since it is Purim season, let us note a new edition of Megillat
Esther, (im perush ma'ase tokfo..) by R' Shlomo Abed Tawina z"l. The
text, with vocalization is accompanied by commentary by the author
who was born in 1855. The book also includes the bio – history of the
author and thereby includes the history of Syrian, Haleb Jewry who
migrated to Baghdad, Iraq and Calcutta, India in the 19th Cent. CE.

[ha-Safran]: Palestine Betrayed (a book review)

2011-03-20 Thread David Elazar
Palestine Betrayed by Efraim Karsh Yale University Press, 2010. (a
book review)

  http://www.jewishpolicycenter.org/2081/palestine-betrayed

….the Palestinian narrative has become the most widely repeated
version of events: …. Karsh sets out "to reclaim the historical
truth" behind Israel's creation. In doing so, he tests such
Palestinian narratives and the conclusions of the "new
historians"revisionists such as Avi Shlaim, Ilan Pappe, and the
early Benny Morris who in the 1980s rose to challenge the established
narrative of Israel's birth. …. His detailed examination of the
historical records reveals that Israel's establishment was not the
main cause of the Palestinian refugee problem …it was the result of
actions taken by the Palestinian Arabs and their leaders.
…. holds the mufti of Jerusalem, Hajj Amin Husseini, responsible for
the deterioration of neighborly relations between the Arabs and Jews
during the Mandate period, and for the eventual "collapse and
dispersion of Palestinian Arab society." Hajj Amin,…. "viewed the
Palestinians not as a distinct people deserving statehood but as an
integral part of a single Arab nation"with himself as leader, and
clean of Jews. To this end, Hajj Amin, an admirer and supporter of
Adolf Hitler's Nazi Germany, launched a campaign to demolish the
Jewish national revival by enraging his constituents with all the
anti-Jewish rhetoric he could find, from verses in the Quran to The
Protocols of the Elders of Zion.
Karsh astutely points out that the Arab invasion following
Israel's independence "was more of a scramble for Palestine than an
attempt to secure Palestinian national rights." … "The 1948 war
resulted in the total disintegration of Palestinian Arab society." By
the end of the Mandate in May 1948, some 340,000 Arabs had fled
Palestine; by January 1949, that number swelled to 600,000a direct
result of Arab leaders' coercion and invasion. ….proves remarkably
well with a substantial body of sourced material and quotations from
key British, Jewish, and Arab eyewitnesses. …
…"Had the Mufti chosen to lead his people to peace and reconciliation
with their Jewish neighbors," Karsh writes, "the Palestinians would
have had their independent state" in accordance with the 1947 UN
Partition Plan for Palestine, which the Jews accepted and Palestine's
Arab leaders did not. ….Yassir Arafat…. chose to pocket international
aid and create terrorist networks rather than infrastructure
necessary for an independent state. The same now applies to Mahmoud
Abbas who refuses to accept Israel's 'Jewishness' in a peace
agreement but insists that Israel fully implement the right of
return, "the Palestinian and Arab euphemism for Israel's destruction."
…. Palestinian mythology continues to hinder all attempts at solving
the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Indeed, the notion that Israel is
solely responsible for creating the Palestinian refugee encourages
Palestinian leaders and society to cling to the erroneous belief that
Israel will welcome each refugee into the state as part of a peace
deal. And as long as this remains a Palestinian redline, there is no
hope for ending the conflict.

The Exodus Haggadah restores the account of the Exodus from Egypt to
its place as the focus of the Seder. Newly translated from the Book
of Exodus, the account is interleaved with the prayers, rituals,
rabbinic analysis and anecdotes of the Traditional Haggadah. The
analysis and anecdotes are in margin notes beside corresponding
points in the Exodus story. Notes on linguistics, Egyptian culture,
and Jewish practices, add clarity, context, and interest.

The purpose of the Passover Seder is to relate the Exodus from
Egyptian slavery to freedom. For centuries, Jews did so in the hills
of Jerusalem, in sight of the Temple, at dinners of roasted lamb,
matzot, and bitter herbs, drinking wine"to gladden the heart" and
singing Hallel to express thanks for freedom. For them, the Seder
was national and religious dinner-theater.

When the Romans destroyed the Temple and banned the observances in
Jerusalem, the Rabbis began compiling the traditional Haggadah as
"director's notes" for the evening's celebration. The Rabbis presumed
the people knew the Exodus story and would tell it. For that reason,
it was not copied into the Haggadah. Rather, commentary and anecdotes
were included to edify the "director" and amplify points of the
story, not replace it. Over time, the custom developed of reading the
Haggadah and omitting the story – a practice many contemporary Jews
find unsatisfying. The Exodus Haggadah remedies that dissatisfaction
and creates interest and excitement among all Jews, religious,
secular, and unaffiliated, by returning the Exodus story to the Seder.

Sample pages of the Exodus Haggadah can be viewed at www.ExodusHaggadah.com

Or, call Seth at 650-814-8501 or Shoshana at 317-414-1480 for further

THE MANFRED R. LEHMANN MEMORIAL MASTER WORKSHOP IN

THE HISTORY OF THE JEWISH BOOK

The Jewish Studies Program at the University of Pennsylvania, in
conjunction with the University of Pennsylvania Library and the Katz
Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania,
are pleased to announce the eleventh annual Manfred R. Lehmann
Memorial Master Workshop to be held on May 8-9, (Sunday-Monday),
2011, at the Katz Center. The topic is Collectors and Collections:
Hebrew Manuscripts and Incunabula in Russia. This year's workshop
will be led by Dr. Shimon Iakerson, the Head Researcher at the
Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences
and Curator of the Judaica collections of the Russian Museum of
Ethnography. One of the world's leading experts on Hebrew incunabula,
Professor Iakerson is the author of many books including Ohel Hayim
Vol. 3 (Incunabula and Sixteenth Century Books in the Manfred and Ann
Lehmann Collection) and the monumental Catalogue of Hebrew Incunabula
from the Collection of the Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary
of America.

About 22 thousand Hebrew manuscripts and more than 100 Hebrew
incunabula are preserved in the libraries and research centers of
Russia. Until recently these volumes were largely unavailable to
Western scholars. Since the opening of these collections some twenty
years ago, they have revolutionized many fields in Jewish Studies.
This year's Lehmann Workshop will deal with the histories of these
collections, the stories of the collectors and bibliographers who
built them, and the importance of these books for the history of
Jewish culture. Other topics to be treated will include the nature of
the earliest Hebrew codices; Karaite manuscripts and communities;
forgery; and the importance of the Russian incunabula for
understanding the beginnings of Jewish printing. Since the workshop
will concentrate upon reading colophons, dedications and owners'
notes, knowledge of Hebrew is highly desirable.

The workshop is open to professors and independent scholars,
professional librarians in the field of Jewish and related studies,
and graduate students in Jewish Studies. Attendance at previous
workshops is not a prerequisite for admission.

For faculty and professionals, tuition is $250. In addition to
attendance and all materials for the workshop, the tuition includes
two or three nights in a hotel (double-occupancy) for the nights of
May 7 and 8 (with the option of May 6), and all meals and
refreshments (all kosher) during the course of the workshop.
Graduate students may apply for a full scholarship to the workshop.
To apply for the scholarship, a graduate student should write us
giving the details of his or her academic program and a brief
statement explaining how the workshop will further his or her
academic studies. S/he should also ask a faculty advisor to write us
a letter of recommendation on the student's behalf.

Attendance is limited. If you are interested in attending the
workshop, please notify us immediately. Full payment must be received
by March 1, 2011. Make checks payable to "Trustees of the University
of Pennsylvania." A registration form is available at:

Temple Emanu-El invites you to a attend the next event in its Library
Museum Lecture Series
Katharine Weber, Author of Triangle: A Novel
Wednesday, March 23, 2011 • 6:30 PM
1 East 65th Street
New York NY 10065

MARCH 25, 2011, IS the 100th anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist
Factory fire, a workplace disaster that had enormous effect on the
growing labor movement and politics. Temple Emanu-El member Henry
Morganthau was involved in the legal proceedings after the
fire. Author Katharine Weber, through the context of her
fictionalized account of the fire, will discuss the tragedy and its
long-lived consequences.

Ms. Weber's novel features Esther Gottesfeld, the last living
survivor of the fire, who has told her story countless times in the
span of her lifetime. Even so, her death at the age of 106 leaves
many unanswered questions about what happened that fateful day. How
did she manage to survive the fire when at least 146 workers, most of
them women, her sister and fiancé among them, burned or jumped to
their deaths from the sweatshop inferno? Are the discrepancies in her
various accounts over the years just ordinary human fallacy, or is
there a hidden story in Esther's recollections of that terrible day?
Esther's granddaughter Rebecca Gottesfeld, with her partner George
Botkin, an ingenious composer, seek to unravel the facts of the
matter while Ruth Zion, a zealous feminist historian of the fire,
bores in on them with her own mole-like agenda. A brilliant, haunting
novel about one of the most terrible tragedies in early 20th-century
America, Triangle forces us to consider how we tell our stories, how
we hear them and how history is forged from unverifiable truths.

KATHARINE WEBER IS THE AUTHOR OF "FRIEND OF THE FAMILY" (SHORT STORY)
AND THE NOVELS OBJECTS IN MIRROR ARE CLOSER THAN THEY APPEAR, THE
MUSIC LESSON, THE LITTLE WOMEN, TRIANGLE AND TRUE CONFECTIONS. HER
MEMOIR, THE MEMORY OF ALL THAT, WILL BE PUBLISHED IN 2011. MS. WEBER
IS CURRENTLY AN ADJUNCT ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN THE GRADUATE WRITING
PROGRAM AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY.

Enter at 1 East 65th Street between Fifth and Madison Avenues
New York, NY 10065

[ha-Safran]: Triangle Shirtwaist Fire and Librarians

2011-03-20 Thread Soren88
The fire occurred on Shabbat March 25, 1911...

The portion of Torah reading on this day was "Vayakhel" - "You shall
kindle no fire throughout your habitations upon the Sabbath day..."

146 people died the owners of the factory allegedly had locked
all exit doors ..

18 young women and 6 men were buried in the cemetery of The Hebrew
Free Burial Association on Staten Island.

Mr. Jonathan Mark of The Jewish Week wrote a beautiful article about
this tragedy in the issue of March 31, 2006.

[ha-Safran] Gaza doctor book

2011-03-20 Thread Liz Edelglass
Dear all-

A patron recommended the following book for our library:

I Shall Not Hate: A Gaza Doctor's Journey on the Road to Peace and
Human Dignity / by Izzeldin Abuelaish.

Are any of you familiar with this book. Is it an appropriate
purchase for a Judaic library with a very limited budget?

Thanks, as always.

Liz

[ha-Safran]: Forverts/Triangle Shirtwaist Fire and Librarians

2011-03-20 Thread Amanda_Seigel
Dear Safranim,

Thanks for your interest in the Forverts in the Dorot Jewish Division
of The New York Public Library. As Janina Wurbs noted, the Forverts
is here on microfilm. We don't have the original physical copies -
even if they had been retained the condition would be extremely poor.
We do keep some physical copies of the Forverts from the last several
years - it is still published as a Yiddish weekly.

Isaac Bashevis Singer did publish regularly in the Forverts using
various pseudonyms.

My colleague in the Jewish Division, Roberta Saltzman, created a bibliography:

Isaac Bashevis Singer : a bibliography of his works in Yiddish and
English, 1960-1991.
Lanham, Md. : Scarecrow Press, 2002.
ISBN/ISSN0810843153 (alk. paper)

Additional bibliographies include:

Miller, David Neal. Bibliography of Isaac Bashevis Singer, 1924-1949.
New York : P. Lang, c1983.
ISBN/ISSN0820400025 (pbk.)

Miller, David Neal. A bibliography of Isaac Bashevis Singer, January
1950-June 1952 / by David Neal Miller. New York, N.Y. : Max Weinreich
Center for Advanced Jewish Studies, YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, c1979.

For European Yiddish periodicals, there is an excellent resource
available online through JNUL, the Index to Yiddish Periodicals. Here
is a link: http://yiddish-periodicals.huji.ac.il/

The Forverts is not indexed, nor are other American Yiddish
newspapers. Digitization, along with reliable Yiddish OCR, would be
extremely useful for researchers and librarians - and I hope that
such a project will be possible in the near future.

Please contact me individually if you need more information or assistance.

Best wishes,

Amanda

[ha-Safran]: Lecture on the Dakar - Israel's lost submarine

2011-03-20 Thread Shirazi, Gail
Never Forgotten: The Search for Israel's Lost Submarine DAKAR

Lecture and by David W. Jourdan- President & Founder of Nauticos

When: Thursday, April 7 at 7PM

Where: Magen David Sephardic Congregation

11215 Woodglen Dr Rockville, MD 20852

$5 at the door, light refreshments will be served.

For more information call Andrea at 301-770-6818 or
e-mailand...@magendavidsephardic.org

On Jan. 25, 1968, the Dakar, Israel's newly commissioned submarine,
disappeared without a trace in the eastern Mediterranean. Israel
spent the next 31 years looking for the massive submarine and her
crew of 69 officers and seamen. In 1996, the country invited a noted
ocean explorer, David Jourdan, to investigate, and in 1999 Jourdan
and his team solved the legendary mystery.
Jourdan's book, "Never Forgotten" traces the Dakar from its
origins in the British Navy in World War II through its sale to
Israel and the fateful voyage across the Mediterranean. The book
describes the search and discovery of the submarine, and it also
tells the story of the boat's crew and the impact the tragedy had on
an entire nation.

Jourdan is the co-founder and president of Nauticos, an
ocean exploration company in Cape Porpoise, Maine. A 1976 graduate
of the U.S. Naval Academy, Jourdan served as a U.S. Navy submarine
officer. He holds a master's degree in applied physics from The
Johns Hopkins University.

Mr. Jourdan will also be lecturing on his new book: "The Deep Sea
Quest for Amelia Earhart" at the Library of Congress, Friday April
8th at 11:30 AM in the Pickford Theater of the Madison Building (3rd floor).
