[ha-Safran]: Sylvia Firschhein

2011-05-23 Thread fredis...@aol.com
I believe I speak for everyone who knew Sylvia when I say that she
will be missed. For many years she was the First-timers' moderator at
conventions, and our newcomers couldn't have had a friendlier or more
helpful introduction. She always asked our executives to show up, and
introduced us, demonstrating AJL's commitment to expand our reach.

I'd like to propose to those going to Montreal that we take up a
collection in her memory, and that the funds be sent to one of the
libraries she served with dedication.

[ha-Safran]: Two recent AJL losses

2011-05-23 Thread James Rosenbloom
Hello. We have recently lost two members who were active in AJL.

Sylvia Firschein died on May 16. Fran Wolf posted her obituary on
Hasafran several days ago. Sylvia led the new convention attendees
meeting at every convention for at least 20 years until her husband
got sick. She organized a new chapter in West Florida when she moved
to Sarasota about ten years ago that has grown strong through the
years. She expanded its membership with members up and down the West Coast.

Dorothy (Dotty) Ehrich passed away on May 5. Dotty was the SSC Vice
President between 15 and 20 years ago and attended convention for
many years. She had many AJL friends throughout the country. Below
is her obituary.

EHRICH, DOROTHY D. (82), mother of Beverly Ehrich of Pawtucket (Carl
Freedman), and grandmother of Jesse, Adam and Ben Freedman, passed
away peacefully in Mountainside, NJ on May 5, 2011 surrounded by her
loving family. Dot's greatest joys were her husband of 62 years,
Herb, and her four children and twelve grandchildren. Dot was a
graduate of Hunter College 49, where she was Class President and a
loyal sister of Phi Sigma Sigma. Prior to moving to Westfield, NJ
where she raised her family, Dot taught kindergarten in the New York
City public schools. In Westfield, Dot was active in numerous
organizations including ORT, Hadassash, PTA, and the Westfield High
School Library. Dot was the librarian for 33 years at Temple
Emanu-el, Westfield, NJ. The family requests that donations be made
to the Temple Emanu-el Library, 756 E. Broad Street, Westfield, NJ
07090, or the MSK Cancer Center (Ephraim Casper Research Fund), P.O.
Box 27106, New York, NY 10087.

We are indebted to them for all of their work on behalf of AJL and
Judaica librarianship. May the memory of them be a blessing for us.

I want to thank Toby Rossner for assisting me in the preparation of this email.

Jim Rosenbloom
