[ha-Safran]: Commentary and Tikkun

2011-09-21 Thread Barbara Mende
The discussion of JRB (which we get) reminds me of a discussion
that's going on in our Conservative congregation. We used to get
Commentary and it was cut off before my time as too conservative (in
the political, not the Jewish, sense). Tikkun never made the cut but
was proposed to offset Commentary. Does anyone have an opinion on these?

Thanks!
Barbara

I may have asked this before, but we need to select a few new books

[ha-Safran]: Large print and audio cookbooks and prayerbooks

2010-10-13 Thread Barbara Mende
We need to memorialize someone who had limited vision, gave us many large print
books and audiobooks, was passionate about cooking, and was religious.

Does anyone know of good kosher cookbooks in large print and/or audio?

And does anyone know whether the Conservative prayerbooks are available in
audio?

If there are any other significant large print or audio works that we may not
know about, I'd like to hear about those too.

Yes, I've noticed that; I think it's true in adult literature too
these days (e.g., Sarah's Key). I imagine people think that if they
make the Holocaust more mainstream, it'll appeal to more

How can something written at the time the events occurred be
old-fashioned? Do they want the forties to come off like this
century? Old-fashioned? What can be more real and authentic?

I like the Book Thief and perhaps it's gentler because it deals
mainly with survival, but is gentle what we want here? Agree that
despite its young teen heroine and its appearance on young adult book
lists, it's not a young adult book.

Re: [ha-Safran]: No more assigned classics

2009-09-14 Thread Barbara Mende
My tenth grade high school class (about 30 of us, in the fifites) was
required to join a paperback-book-of-the-month club. Believe me, the
choices were assorted - about five a month, I think, from mysteries
to politics. Many of us ordered more than one book; I often got all
of them. We then broke into groups and dramatized each of the
books. We got such a fabulous education in all kinds of things that
I wasn't accepted to the college of my parents' choice because the
interviewer wanted to know how come we didn't read Silas Marner in
tenth grade (it was one of the selections, in fact) and I told her
what I thought of that. (I did get into the college of my own choice.)

Therefore, I think it's wonderful.

I absolutely agree. We just had to replace two Sammy Spider's First

[ha-Safran]: Summer reading, Havdalah and synagogue books

2008-03-24 Thread Barbara Mende
1. Last year some of you had summer reading lists for kids and
adults. Anyone have one out now that you'd like to share?

2. Our new preschool director is looking for a book about
Havdalah. I know it's in a lot of Shabbat books but wondered whether
anyone had seen a whole little-kids book about it.

3. Same with going to synagogue for little guys.

Thanks!

[ha-Safran]: Bibliographies

2008-03-03 Thread Barbara Mende
I've seen them come and go and I know there are many good ones on the
AJL site - but I've been asked whether there's a basic bibliography
of books that all synagogue libraries should have (not fiction or
children's necessarily).

We're a conservative synagogue.

Thanks, everyone!

Also - what is the world's best Talmud/Aramaic

I'm looking for a short reading (doesn't have to be a poem) for an
interfaith marriage. The bride and groom want something with a
Jewish flavor or origin. I'm afraid our wedding book collection
isn't what it should be. Ideas on either? Thanks!

[ha-Safran]: Naming books

2007-03-29 Thread Barbara Mende
No, not What Should We Name the Baby. Something that translates and
transliterates to and from Hebrew, Yiddish, Ladino - the more the merrier.

This request came up when someone found an old Hebrew inscription
which she believed to be her late sister's Hebrew name, but it wasn't
exactly. Then it came up again, also in a funeral preparation
context. No one even knows whether such a book exists. Any info on
this, let me know.

Also, we're very seriously buying kids' books. Anyone who comes
across a truly marvelous list (other than AJL) or a truly marvelous
book, do let me know if you think of it.

Thanks!

[ha-Safran]: Encyclopedia Judaica

2007-03-07 Thread Barbara Mende
We are about to order it, and I know it was discussed before but I
gather no one would want to talk us out of it?

I'm confused by the pricing of the CD. One vendor has it for $450
and another for $190. Are there two versions of it? What's the difference?

If anyone has vendor tips on both the books and the CDs, I'd
appreciate hearing about that offlist.

Thanks!

[ha-Safran]: Young adult books

2006-10-18 Thread Barbara Mende
Right now we don't have a section for young adult books; everything
that isn't adult and is above the board-book level is labeled juvenile.

I'd like to know (1) what you all think of that, and (2) what your
definition is of "young adult" if you have one.

Thank you!
