[ha-Safran]: Need Intereview with Library Administrator
Hello safranim. I am a Master's of Library Science student at Syracuse University. One of our assignments is to interview a library admin in a field we would like to pursue. Any takers? Pretty please? [ha-Safran]: Educational Resources for Teaching Holidays
Hello everyone. Hope all of you had a fulfilling Yontif. Seeing Jacob's email with the Hebrew teaching videos (thanks!) reminded me I am trying to help the Director of Education of our religious school find some online lesson-planning resources / instructional materials for teaching holidays (anything K-12 would be helpful). Specifically, she said she wants students to be engaging more with actual Hebrew text rather than simply getting broad, simplistic overviews year-in year-out. Any ideas? [ha-Safran]: Reposting
Here are the responses to a request I sent out a few weeks back, reposted in case anyone is interested. Bob, Since my retirement I did not follow up on the plans of Tora Aura to put on line their "The whole school curriculum". Personally I had some reservations about their publications, but teachers loved it. Hageem uznmaneem lesimhah moadeem lesason. [ha-Safran]: Compelling article
You raise a lot of really interesting questions Stephanie. I wonder if it would be possible to get some of the Hebraica/Judaica librarians or other AJL members on this list to do video conference presentations on some of the topics you mentioned... [ha-Safran]: Hebrew/Chumash Resource List / Pathfinder
A freilechen Chunukah Safranim! I just finished a Hebrew language and Chumash pathfinder for one of my reference classes and I thought some of you may find it useful. You can find it here: http://bit.ly/h6sP4C Special thanks to Jacob Richman and his website for getting me started on this. RE: [ha-Safran]: Old Encyclopedia Judaica and Jewish Encyclopedias
@Janice Colton I just recently did a resource review (http://bit.ly/h5RMwg) on Encyclopaedia Judaica 2007 (free online version at http://www.bjeindy.org/encyclopedia_judaica_online). According to the author of the 2007 preface, the authors of the first edition published for the first time in 1972. They make no mention of the existence of a 1971 version. So I'm not sure if your synagogue somehow received a provisional edition before it was publicly released? My guess would be that there may have been some confusion about the publishing years during the original communication with the senior Rabbi; perhaps you might double check with him. With regard to the Jewish Encyclopedia, I would send it to the geniza since it's an old copy and it's available for free online at http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/. Unless there are others on the listserv who might know of some value intrinsic to the 1902 version (or perhaps antiquity value if refurbished), I'd say it's probably not worth keeping. [ha-Safran]: AJL Linklist
Hello fellow Safranim, As some of you may know, I recently took over the weekly link roundup for the AJL's People of the Books blog. Given that there are so many of us who probably come across new (and old) web resources that would be of great use to the members of the AJL community, I wanted to invite people to send those links along to me for publication on the blog. Rather than having a single person (i.e., me) compile relevant AJL links each week, I think we might have a much richer and useful list if everyone contributed. Two possible ways to communicate resources of interest to me are as follows: 1) Add your link/annotation to Delicious with an AJL_links metatag. I'll search for "AJL_links" in Delicious each week to see what people are adding and then publish them to the blog. 2) Email me directly with the link/annotation. Please inform me of any suggestions you might have. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks! [ha-Safran]: Montreal or bust
Hi folks, I'm a grad student here at Syracuse University living in Dewitt, NY. I wanted to know if either 1) Anyone heading up to Montreal from NYC or elsewhere would be able to give me a ride to and from the convention OR 2) Would share a room at the hotel with me this summer. OR BOTH You would be welcome to stay at our apartment for Shabbos leading up to the convention (we keep kosher and shomer Shabbos). If you're coming from NYC, it's a great way to split up the trip since it's only about 4.5 hours from here to Montreal. More generally for other folks driving up for NYC: consider staying in Dewitt on the Shabbos as a way to break up the drive from NYC. We constantly get travelers to and from Montreal stopping here in Dewitt because it's the halfway point between Montreal and NYC. There's a hotel within walking distance of the shul (about 1 mi) and perhaps a family or two who might be able to host people for Shabbos. Please contact me if you need any more info. Looking forward to seeing you all there! [ha-Safran]: AJL 2011 Presenters
To anyone who presented at AJL 2011: If you would all be so kind as to send me your PowerPoint presentations, I would be happy to load them into Slideshare and provide a link to them in the AJL blog so that people could refer back to them as needed (I'm already wishing I took better notes on Elhanan's lecture on the NLI switch to LCSH). Please spread the word to anyone who might not see this message on HaSafran.
