Dear Chaya,

f it is helpful, I beleive that the date of publication is:

January 12, 1996.

This information was obtained from p. 112 of
"Two Jews, three opinions: a collection of twentieth-century American
Jewish quotations."-[via Google Books].

My institution does not carry that date.

2010-07-09 Thread Heidi G Lerner
I would like to add my thanks and deep appreciation to all of you who
worked so hard to organize and host my colleagues and me at this
wonderful 2010 AJL Convention. From the moment of my arrival until my
departure Wednesday morning, everything flowed smoothly and I was
able to thoroughly enjoy interacting with all my fellow safranim and
bibliophiles, attending excellent sessions, utilizing the excellent
facilities of the hotel, eating delicious and healthy food, and of
course being in the beautiful city of Seattle.

Again, rav hodot and mazal tov on a job beautifully done.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Subject heading

2008-04-14 Thread Heidi G. Lerner
Dear Margot,

I encourage you to go consider establishing the "disengagement" from
Gaza as a subject heading as Aaron suggests.

If your institution is not an independent PCC member and thus not a
member of SACO, may I recommend that your institution join the
Judaica SACO Funnel. We would welcome the contributions from the
Simon Wiesenthal Center of which I am sure that there could be
potentially many unique and important subject heading contributions
from which we could all benefit and use.

If you do consider joining the funnel please feel free to contact me
and I can outline the steps for you. You can also take a look at the
SACO website at http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/saco/saco.html.

Thank you,

Dear ALC colleagues - You'll find below a text version of the
letter from the Africana Librarians Council sent to the Library
of Congress regarding the 20 April 2006 decision to cease creating
series authority records. [snip]
Yours, Lauris

TEXT OF LETTER

12 May 2006

Beacher J.E. Wiggins
Director for Acquisitions and Bibliographic Access
Library of Congress
Washington, DC 20540-4300

Dear Director Wiggins,

The membership of the Africana Librarians Council - the
organization of professional librarians working in African
studies and a sponsored organization of the African Studies
Association (U.S.) - has requested that I notify you
regarding our concern over the Library of Congress's 20
April 2006 decision to cease creating series authority
records and providing controlled series access in
bibliographic records.

Series control, as with all aspects of bibliographic
control, is critically important in the ever-expanding
world of book publishing in Africa. As with many industries
in developing countries, African book publishing often
seems unsystematic, with books typically printed in short
runs and reprinted several years later exhibiting changes
in bibliographic elements. We see any erosion in
bibliographic control as harmful to the Library of
Congress's mission to collect research materials from
African countries and also to its Cooperative Acquisition
Program partnerships with U.S. research libraries.

We observe that African studies readers in the U.S. rely
upon series names as brands of quality. Several major
African publishers have made formal arrangements with U.S.
and other publishers to co-publish, reprint, or distribute
their titles outside Africa. To navigate through this
confusing and duplicative literature, bibliographers,
acquisitions librarians, and - most important - readers,
especially scholarly readers, need controlled series names.

Your annual report for FY2005 noted that the Library of
Congress has moved to improve the cataloging capabilities
of its overseas offices. The Library of Congress's overseas
offices serve as a major acquisitions source for U.S.
research libraries. Your achievement - including direct
inputting into Voyager - will accelerate access to overseas
acquisitions for American readers, as the bibliographic
records created by the overseas offices are becoming
available to Library of Congress Cooperative Acquisition
Program partners even as we unpack the shipping boxes!

Preserving the privileges of overseas office cataloging
staff to produce authority records takes advantage of in-
country headings research, which replaces costly
transatlantic communication. Continuing the practice brings
economic benefits by reducing State-side workloads - both
at the Library of Congress and among those U.S. research
libraries building African collections with one or no
Africanist cataloger - with no or negligible fiscal
increases. And most important, it would strengthen the
professionalization of librarians in developing countries.

We hope that you will lead a re-examination of the Library
of Congress's series authority decision. We ask also that
you avoid making similar decisions in the future without
consulting your partners in the Library of Congress's
Program for Cooperative Cataloging, and your professional
colleagues in the Asian, African and Middle Eastern Section
of the Association of College and Research Libraries and in
the Cataloging & Classification Section Committee on

[ha-Safran]: Johann Habermann - Dikduk leshon ha-kodesh

2005-08-02 Thread Heidi G Lerner
Dear safranim,

I have a volume in hand which I belive contains parts 1 and 2 of Johann
Habermann's Dikduk leshon ha-kodesh = Grammatices ebraicae sanctae
(Wittenberg, 1562). I have a title page for pt. 2 but I am lacking a title
page and perhaps some preliminary pages for part 1. I have checked RLIN and
OCLC to see if any libraries in the U.S. have this edition but none appear
to (some libraries have later editions). Several German libraries do carry
it but I am hoping to locate a copy in this country. If your library does
have pt. 1 of the 1562 edition, would you be able to scan the title page
and last few pages so that I can positively identify the piece in hand.

Thank you,
Heidi Lerner

[ha-Safran]: Missing title pages

2005-05-10 Thread Heidi G. Lerner
Dear Safranim,
I am trying to catalog a 2 part work from Wittenberg, 1562.
The title page from part 2 reads:
Secundus libellus Ebreae Grammatices complectens observationes ... .
The author is Johanne Avena [Johann Habermann].
I am missing the title page and several initial pages from part 1.
If any library has this volume and can fax or scan me the first few pages,I
would be most appreciative. I have found this work in several German
libraries but not in any American libraries. I may not be searching
correctly in OCLC or RLIN.
I have found in RLIN editions for 1570 and 1575 .
Thank you,

[ha-Safran]: Announcement: Judaica SACO Funnel Project

2005-03-08 Thread Heidi G. Lerner
Dear Safranim,

I would like to announce the formation of the Judaica SACO Funnel Project.
This project has been established to facilitate greater contribution of
subject headings relating to Jewish Studies and Hebraica for inclusion in
Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH).

This funnel project will provide a framework for proposing new subject
headings and LC class numbers required for cataloging, as well as needed
revisions to existing headings and numbers. Participants should have a
basic familiarity with the procedures and guidelines found in the
Subject Cataloging Manual: Subject Headings (SCM H), LCSH, Free-Floating
Subdivisions: An Alphabetical Index, Subject Cataloging Manual:
Classification (SCM F), LC Classification, the MARC 21 Authority Format,
and standard reference sources.

Interest in becoming a participant in this funnel project should be
addressed to: Heidi Lerner, Coordinator, Judaica SACO Funnel Project at:
<mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]>[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thank you,
Heidi G. Lerner

too fragile, transcribe for me at least the title proper.

[ha-Safran]: Hebrew script on RLIN

2005-01-26 Thread Heidi G. Lerner
Dear Safranim,
I would like to know which libraries are currently contributing Hebraica
records (Hebrew and other Jewish languages written in Hebrew characters)
into RLIN (either cataloging directly into RLIN or uploading from a local
system) utilizing the RLIN Hebrew script capability. It does not matter
whether catalogers are using RLIN Terminal for Windows or the new RLIN21
client.
If your institution is contributing Hebrew-script records to RLIN, could
you please contact me privately, one response per institution. I would also
like to have the name or contact information for the principal or head
cataloger of your institution's Hebraica cataloging team.
Please excuse duplication to other lists to which this query may be
cross-posted.

Thank you in advance for your prompt response.

that it dates from the early 19th century (?) and may have been printed in
Northern or Central Europe.
What there is includes haftarah for Tishah be-Av, Shir ha-yihud, various
yotsrot, some selihot, liturgy for Yom kipur katan, dine milah, dine halah,
dine kevurah and dine avelut.

help identifying two items lacking title pages

2004-03-29 Thread Heidi G. Lerner
Dear safranim,
I have in hand two items that lack title pages. I have tried to identify
them using Vinograd and other tools. If your library owns one or both of
the following could you fax me a couple of pages to help me verify more
accurately:

1. I have Tohorot (v. 6?) from what I believe is an edition of MIshnah
published in Livorno (see below record) with the commentary "Ets hayim".
Vinograd (Livorno 9) indicates that this volume has 368 [i.e. 736] p., my
copy has 366 [i.e. 732] p. but it could be missing this last "leaf". I
would appreciate faxes from p. 2, etc. (just a couple of pages will suffice).

Mishnah. 1653.
   Mishnayot : _im perusho shel ... Rashi ... _ve-_im ... _Ets ha-_hayim /
  Ya_a_kov _Hagiz. -- Nidpas be-kerekh _ka_tan. -- Li_vorno : Yedidyah ben
  Yits_ha_k Gabai, 413-415 [1652 or 1653-1654 or 1655]
   6 v. <3, 5> ; 16 cm.

2. V. 3-4 of Sefer Divre Yosef by Joseph Schwarz (see record below). I
would appreciate faxes from p. 4, 5 etc.

Schwarz, Joseph, 1804-1865.
   Sefer Divre Yosef : _hel_ko ha-shelishi _veha-revi_i ... teshuvot / she-
_hibarti Yehosef Sh_varts. Yerushalayim : nidpas _a.y. Yi_sra_el Ba._k., 622
  [1862]
   170 l. ; 17 cm.

If these items are too fragile to fax, could someone call me at
650-725-9953 and we can compare text over the phone.
Thank you in advance,

[Ha-Safran] R&S Cataloging Session for AJL 2004

2003-10-07 Thread Heidi G. Lerner
Dear safranim,
I am organizing a session/panel on cataloging-related issues as relevant
for academic and research libraries (R&S division of AJL) for the 2004 AJL
convention in New York. If you are interested in presenting a paper at this
session please contact me privately. Sessions usually feature 3-4 speakers.
If we do not have room at this session, I will let you know enough in
advance so that you can submit directly to the convention committee for
potential inclusion at another session.
Thank you,
Heidi Lerner

[ha-Safran]: Trying to locate articles by Menachem Kipnis

2003-09-04 Thread Heidi G. Lerner
Dear Safranim,
I was contacted by someone trying to locate a series of articles written by
Manachem Kipnis for the paper "Haynt' and titled "Yidishe klezmer
in Poyln.' I checked the Index to Yiddish Periodicals and could only find
one citation under his name (from num. 203, Sept. 14, 1913) but it
seems not to be related. Can anyone out there help?
Thanks in advance,
Heidi Lerner

[ha-Safran]: Online Hebrew/English dictionary

2003-07-16 Thread Heidi G. Lerner
Dear safranim,

For those of you who have not yet seen it, a nice online Hebrew/English
dictionary is available at the following URL:

  http://milon.morfix.co.il/
To use this dictionary, you will probably need Internet Explorer 5.0 or
higher with Hebrew fonts installed.

[ha-Safran]: R&S Cataloging Committee, 2003

2003-06-19 Thread Heidi G. Lerner
Dear safranim,
The R&S Cataloging Committee meeting, scheduled for 4-5, Sunday June 18,was
cancelled due to minimal presence in Toronto of its members. I am
providing below a list of the agenda items and recommendations on how we
will proceed with them in the absence of a meeting this year.

1) Ladino (Joan Biella, Heidi Lerner) - A revised draft of a proposed
ALA/LC Romanization table for Ladino has been developed that is more in
accordance with current scholarly standards. Copies of this table will be
distributed via e-mail to Committee members for their comments, etc. If
this table is approved by the Committee, a request will be made to CPSO
that it be included in a CSB for distribution to the larger cataloging
community

2) Kuntres, Mahberet, Maamar (Joan Biella, Heidi Lerner) - Suggestions have
been that the guidelines for "Sefer" (Maher, HCM, p. 45) be expanded to
include generic terms that indicate the type or form of the literature
contained therein, i.e., "Kuntres, Mahberet, Maamar, etc." A proposal (to
be included in any potential future editions of the Hebraica Cataloging
Manual) will be drafted and distributed to committee members for their comments

3) Judeo-Arabic (Joan Biella ... [et al.]) - Deferred until the R&S
Cataloging Commitee meeting, June 2004

4) Judeo-German (Joan Biella, Daniel Lovins, Heidi Lerner) - In light of
various dissatisfactions with the term Judeo-German, particularly as it is
used in the MARC Code List for Languages, this topic has been added to the
agenda. Recommendations have been made that the current reference to
Yiddish from Judeo-German be removed from the MARC code list. Various
alternatives are being considered and these will be distributed via e-mail
to Committee members and then hopefully distributed in a CSB

If non-committee members are interested in specific topics, please contact
Joan Biella and/or me directly
Thanks,
Heidi Lerner, Chair, R&S Cataloging Committee
