[ha-Safran]: Congratulations

2005-05-15 Thread Irene Seff
AJL/NY Westchester congratulates Rosalind Reisner on winning the AJL
Reference Award for Jewish American Literature: a guide to reading
interests, Greenwood Publishing Group, 2004. ISBN: 1-56308-984-X
On May 10th, our chapter sponsored Rosalind at an open to the public
lecture. Her presentation, "Hungry Hearts: 350 years of American Jewish
history in fiction and biography" was wonderful and very well received.
Combining an overview of American Jewish history, Roz was able to
interweave selective book summaries and readings, choice biographical
tidbits and personal annecdotes.
We all walked away with admiration and gratitude for the amount of
research and time that went into her publication.
Roz will be offering a workshop at AJL Oakland (CA)Convention, June
19-22, 2005.

AJL/NY Westchester chapter is looking for someone to teach about Book
Repairs, preferably as a hands-on workshop (about an hour). This might
include basic repairs, and even what not to try on your own.
If you know someone who might be able to come help us, please be in

fill a program for our winter meeting (January, February or March).

[ha-Safran]: New Shabbat Book

2004-11-15 Thread Irene Seff
Our Religious School Director recently gave each teacher a copy of a
stunning new book, A Day Apart: Shabbat at Home: a step-by-step guidebook
with blessings and songs, rituals and reflections, written by Noam Sachs
Zion and Shawn Fields-Meyers.

I've enjoyed using this book personally and wanted to share my excitement
with you. I've purchased two copies for my synagogue library.

To see four of the 13 sections, log onto Zion's website,
http://www.haggadahsrus.com and scroll to the bottom of the page.

Here's what worked for me:

Beautiful artwork, photography and layout.

Clean, sharp and easy to read Hebrew text font.

Easy to use format, broken into 13 well-organized sections

Line-by-line transliteration and translation.

Packed with essays, poetry, quotes, and lots of parent-child activities.

Contributions by a broad spectrum of the old and the new.

Endnotes provide bibliographic material for further reading.

There are a few possible drawbacks:

A Day Apart only appears in paperback; which may be a problem for some
libraries. There are song lyrics, but no musical notations.

There is no Library of Congress cataloging in publication data.

Further Information:

9.5 x 8.75 inch

soft cover

168 pages, color

$24.95 (5 or more for $15.95 each)

[ha-Safran]: Herzl article

2003-12-08 Thread Irene Seff
Last week I asked if anyone knew where I could find Theodroe Herzl's
"The Menorrah."
I was sent to Alex Bein's article in Philip Goodman's classic 1976 The
Hanukkah Anthology, p. 109. (translated by Maurice Samuels) Bein's 4 page
article does indeed quote and summarize Herzl's article.
However, my congregation's rabbi would like to see the original
article, or its translation. Can anyone help? Footnotes on . 431 say that
the article, "The Menorrah," originally appeared in Die Welt (Hanukkah,
1897), a publication of the Zionist organization.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Need advice

2003-11-25 Thread Irene Seff
I suggest the following:

1. Harvey Fields, A Torah commentary for our times, UAHC Press, NY. Great
starting place, with good overviews and thematic approach.

After that I suggest they read several chumashim and their essays, Etz
Hayyim and JPS torah commentary, Plaut, Fox, Artscroll, even Hertz or Cohen.

For those very adventuresome students, we offer more detailed comentary,
Nehama Leibowitz, nachsoni, or, if appropriate, the Aviva Gottlieb Zornberg
Genesis and Exodus.

[ha-Safran]: Ruth and the Barley harvest

2003-11-16 Thread Irene Seff
Jean Marzollo, author of the new Little Brown books "Miriam and her Brother
Moses" and "Daniel in the Lion's Den," (both favorably reviewed by Shari
Charalambous in the AJL September/October 2003 Newsletter) is now
researching the Story of Ruth.

Irene K. Seff, Librarian

(member librarian of the AJL/NY Westchester chapter)

 From Jean:
I'm just starting my fifth Bible story, "The Song of Ruth." I've been
searching the internet in vain for a book that would explain in detail the
barley harvest at the time of Ruth. My early childhood background pushes
me to understand the details because kids like to know them, and I like to
know them too. For example, after Ruth gleans, what exactly does she do
with her barley? Does she carry the stems home with her or just the head
of the barley plants? How does she separate the grain from the chaff?
The same way that it's done communally at the end of the story? No,
because she'd be back home with Naomi. Is there a historical village in
Israel that I could email for this kind of specific information? Where
they enact the life people lived in ancient times? I used to be an editor
of a kindergarten magazine at Scholastic. When I needed details like this
regarding the First Thanksgiving, I could call Sturbridge Village in MA
and get exactly what I needed.

Is there an Israeli Sturbridge Village?

Best,
Jean Marzollo
