[ha-Safran]: FYI: Library Support Staff Certification Program
Library Support Staff Certification Program offers half-off registration fee For Immediate Release Mon, 01/31/2011 - 15:25 Contact: Jenifer Grady ALA-APA, LSSIRT CHICAGO - As part of a grant from the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the Library Support Staff Certification (LSSC) Program, a program of the American Library Association-Allied Professional Association, will be offering Registration Assistance Awards of $175 to library support staff, half of the fee to register to become a candidate for library support staff certification. The LSSC Program offers library employees the opportunity to achieve recognition for their experience, enhance library service and increase skills and knowledge in areas like the foundations of librarianship, technology and communication. The awards are being offered jointly by the LSSC Program, several state library agencies across the U.S. and the Library Support Staff Interests Round Table (LSSIRT) of the American Library Association. The participating state library agencies are the Arizona State Library, Archives, and Public Records; the District of Columbia; the Idaho Commission for Libraries; the Mississippi State Library; the Oregon State Library; Pennsylvania Office of the Commonwealth of Libraries; the Washington State Library; and the Wyoming State Library. Each state library agency will offer between two and four Registration Assistance Awards. Library support staff who are interested in becoming certified should contact the state library agency in these states. Each state will be setting its own deadline to receive applications. The Library Support Staff Interests Round Table (LSSIRT) of the American Library Association will also announce its participation in the awards in the near future. Library support staff will also be invited to submit applications to LSSIRT. Nancy Bolt, co-project director of LSSC, said, Research in Maryland and Minnesota has shown that certification results in library support staff who have a more comprehensive understanding of library service, are more confident and contribute more to library operation and success. And ultimately, it results in library users that are better served. To be eligible to participate in LSSC and thus receive an Assistance Award, applicants must have a high school degree or its equivalent and have worked for the equivalent of one year (1,820 hours) as a library staff member or volunteer within the last five years. Library Support Staff Certification (LSSC) provides a path to recognition and awareness of the critical role that library support staff plays in the delivery of quality library service. To achieve certification, support staff must achieve six of 10 competency sets either through development of an online portfolio or taking LSSC approved courses. The competency sets are: Foundation of Library Service; Technology; Communication and Teamwork; Access Services, Adult Readers' Advisory Services; Cataloging and Classification; Collection Management; Reference and Information Services; Supervision and Management; and Youth Services. Detailed additional information is available on the LSSC website: http://ala-apa.org/lssc/lssc-news/ or by contacting Nancy Bolt at (303) 642-0338 or nancyb...@earthlink.net Stephanie Gross, MSLIS AJL Mentoring T: 212.960.5442 Skype: Stephanie.L.Gross E: gr...@yu.edu

Endowed by the Brodart Foundation and Arthur Brody, the award consists of a citation and a medal, and pays tribute to Arthurs wife Sophie, a recognized leader and philanthropist in the Jewish community. The award enables readers advisory experts to recommend works of literary merit, as well as highlighting writing that promotes a comprehensive understanding of Judaism. Writers are chosen who explore Jewish characters, settings, themes or philosophies, expands the readers perspective about the Jewish experience or educate the reader about Jewish history, culture and identity. Past winners have achieved these goals by treating such topics as genocide, the search for family members lost during the Holocaust and the stereotypical Jewish mother. The winner and up to three selected honor books will be announced at an awards ceremony at the ALAs 2009 Midwinter Meeting in Denver, Colo. Their authors will be invited to speak to a large audience of librarians at the 2009 Literary Tastes Breakfast, a ticketed event to be held Sunday, July 12, 2009 in Chicago as a part of the ALA Annual Conference. Works of fiction, non-fiction and poetry published between Dec. 1, 2007 and Nov. 30, 2008 are eligible for consideration for the 2009 award. Those interested in submitting publications for consideration should review the complete award criteria and contact Barbara Bibel, chairperson for the award committee, at [EMAIL PROTECTED] for instructions. Librarians and readers can find all previous winners and honor books listed in the Awards section of the RUSA website. The Collection Development and Evaluation Section (CODES) is a part of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA), a division of the American Library Association (http://www.ala.org/http://www.ala.org/). CODES represents the interests of its members who work in collection development, evaluation, and readers advisory services, and provides ongoing networking and professional development opportunities for this group. RUSA is the foremost organization of reference and information professionals who make the connections between people and the information sources, services, and collection materials they need. [ha-Safran]: FYI
Dear Colleagues: It isnt very often that our profession gets a chance to express its opinions. I had the privilege of being interviewed by the Jewish Exponent for a feature of theirs. I want to share the article with you all because it is important for us to express our professional opinions as well as our angsts to the public. In the computer age people lose sight of the importance of libraries and the service we provide to researchers. The article came as a result of a visit by the managing editor of the paper to the college. I would humbly suggest that we all try to get the word out about what we offer in assistance to people from the casual researcher to the academic. Our roles have not changed just the methodology of the way we assist. RE: [ha-Safran]: fyi - ALA conferences
To me, the issue is less where, than when ALA or its subgroups will be meeting. One of our first time Tuesday speakers shared with me the fact that she would have gladly stayed for the rest of the conference had she not already been committed to attend ALA's RBMS Pre-Conference as well. [ha-Safran]: fyi - ALA conferences
At convention someone talked about coordinating our conventions with ALA conferences. Just received this information (included in a document entitled ALA Conferences: response to post-Orland questions, July 2004). ALA Annual Conferences are currently scheduled in: Chicago (2005, 2009), New Orleans (2006, 2011), Washington DC (2007, 2013), Anaheim (2008, 2012), Orlando (2010), Las Vegas (2014), San Francisco (2015). New York City is expected to bid on a future conference. Local expansion (both hotel and convention center) may put both Boston and Philadelphia on future annual conference lists.
